Keys to the Sky Palace

By Cosmic Cairns on February 1, 2024 5:56 pm

Being inspired by dreams has been working pretty well so far this year so the jumping off point for this one was another dream I recently had.  In this one I was flying over a canyon with all these weird and interesting looking rock formations.  Then hidden in the middle of them somewhere was a gigantic palace with towers reaching towards the sky that you somehow couldn't see until you found the right place.  Because of, like, magic or something.  You know, dream logic.  Anyway I took this as a starting point and wrote some lyrics from there.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Flying over rock formations
Searching for the hidden door
Among boulders streaked with lichen
High above the canyon floor

There's a palace somewhere round here
Towers stretching towards the sun
Final relic of a long lost
Ancient civilization

The map shows a secret passage
Near a broken heart shaped rock
Rumors say its littered with traps
Door's secured by complex locks

Sky Palace holds many secrets
Don't know what all I might see
In a desert village market
I tracked down the missing keys

Sweet tune! I really dig the backwards guitar swells. Love your vocals as usual. Nice one!

Great song!  I love the song structure!  It really flows from one section to another.  And I love the "solo" that comes in around 2:45 to end it.  Great tune.

Yous on fire btw!!

I love the change to the surf rock beat for the chorus. Guitar swells sound great. Cool drop into the bridge to change things up. Nice job, keep it up!

Love the dream theme, its like letting your mind do the thinking for you.

Wild song though, very well written and recorded.  It definitely has that western canyon-land sound to it too.  Digging the swells too.

Really into your lyrics, super cool to see others leaning into fantasy/dreams as a source of inspiration. The sounds of your guitars sound really nice too, kind of has a indie psychedelic vibe.

Nice panned out guitars and diggin the tone of your vocals.  Def got some coastin over mountain top feels.  Wish I could remember my dreams like that smile  The synth pad change up in the middle was a nice touch as well.  Nice work!

This is great! I want to hear more for sure!

I love tripping with your songs. They are always full of nice pictures and a little of the track. But now I can understand it, the origin are your dreams. The musical work is awesome as well.

living the dream or dreaming that you are living, nice work!

Thanks!  There are definitely times when a little backwards guitar is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Thanks!  This is the song I've done so far this year that I'm probably the happiest with.  Now I've just gotta try to top it!  smile

Thanks!  Sometimes it's easy to just ride one groove for a whole track, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm for sure interested in doing some tracks this year that have some changeups.

I can't always remember my dreams, and I often don't understand them when I do, but I'm open to using them as sources of inspiration for sure.

Thank you.  I definitely don't shy away from fantasy or dreams as a source of inspiration.  I'm not opposed to addressing reality either, but to a large extent I do view music and creativity as an act of escapism.

A lot of times I don't remember them at all or they fade really fast when I wake up.  But if I can cling to an image here or there, I'll take it.

Thanks!  I'll keep trying to churn these suckers out.  smile

I don't always draw from dreams, but I do like having a sense of unreality a lot of times, so dreams can be a good source of inspiration when I can actually remember them.

A little of both I suspect.  Thanks!

wow what a neat dream turned into neat song dug the synth horns at the end

This 1000% evokes the image of someone flying/floating aimlessly through the sky and accidentally stumbling across a magically hidden and impossibly tall tower.

Oh, I forgot to mention: not only did you hit the mark on the vibe, but the tune itself is GREAT! I really like how you used the guitar here, it sounded very ethereal. Awesome!

The whole thing is super fun but I LOVE the outro.

the vocal melody reminds me of a brand new song but I can't put my finger on which one it is right now.

An intriguing adventure, happy to be on it with you. Since I'm into dragons this week, I'm imagining dragons (not the band), are the creatures taking flight here. Maybe you're riding one.  I like the kind of half time little breaks. Great mix of everything, so clear, nice stereo. Sounds like a really fun dream. I never get my dreams written down before forgetting.

nice one!!!  I lkie the interplay between the different guitars...this more band-like approach suits well to your songs...great!

Thanks!  And a cool dreamy gif, too.

Thanks!  I think it helped that I had a really clear image in my mind of what I wanted to convey.

Thanks!  Those outros can really do a lot of heavy lifting for songs.

I'm not familiar, but I'd be interested in hearing it.  Let me know if you think of which one it is.

It's funny you mention the means of flying, because that's the source of inspiration for this upcoming week's track.  I had an interesting idea about it, but I also fully endorse the idea of dragons being involved here.  They would fit with the theme nicely, I think.

Thanks!  I've always liked a more full-band sound, but sometimes found it difficult to achieve all by myself.  With all the new technology and toys they've come out with in recent years and some production tricks I've learned, I feel like I have better tools and techniques now to approximate that feeling.

loved the surprise sounds at 1:55
but loved the SURPRISE SURPRISE at 2:43

Thanks!  I always think you shouldn't be able to listen to the first 30 seconds of a song and feel like you've heard the whole thing.  Even if there are only small surprises, surprises are important.

that bass riff is hypnotic. Great use of reverse sounds to transition to next sections, I just love those. Sense of mystery and journey under the starts. Digging this track a lot! The air smells of magic!

i like the intimate feel of the stereo panned guitars complimenting some of that more spaghetti-western/surf-style guitar slightly more in the background at times... perfectly frames the adventurously revealing feel! heart

I love the mood it sets, adventurous and mysterious.

Thanks!  Yeah, that mysterious journey full of magic was for sure the vibe I was going for.  I wish there were a few more of those in real life, but I'll take such journeys in music if nothing else.

Thanks!  It was fun putting those guitar parts together for sure.
