Desert Crown

By blighters_rock on January 28, 2024 11:57 pm

I had an idea I was playing around with all week, but it didn't pan out and the deadline was looming, so I abandoned it at T-6H and started this. Not the most original progression, but whatevs. Just in under the wire, whew!

› Lyrics

Funny that we both wrote songs about Tucson/Arizona weather this week, also with an emphasis on acoustic guitars and percussion over traditional drums. What are the odds, lol. Mine was about the several days rain we've been getting lately though which has been nice tongue

I dig it, it captures those the local folk vibes pretty well. Great job with the lyrics and singing, very vivid and descriptive with a good rhythmic flow.

So it was all done today?

Solid. I really admire the commitment to do sing on pretty much all tracks (at least this year). I am kind of shy about that, even here on this super friendly platform.

Super impressive for 6 hours. Very clean. Like the change of shaker patterns + the addition of the extra layer. The fill into the the end section was nice too.

Wow! I like this one a lot. The melody you're singing is really pleasant sounding and I like the chords you used. The vocal delivery sounds really good. Really glad we got to hear this! This is an excellent song.

Great song writing.

Living in neighboring Nevada, I can relate to these lyrics.  I went out in my jacket today and had to take it off because it was so warm and beautiful outside.  Nice work for a last minute change in direction.

Awesome! Looks like we both bailed for the i VI VII this time 😆

Really clean performance and song writing

nice, you record everything urself?

Super catchy song and chord progression.  Had me wishing I had a shaker egg to shake along with.  Well done!

Can I listen it in Spotify? It sounds awesome. Great lyrics too.

Your vocals just get better. Great lyrics and ending.

Great song! I love that drop of the melody in "crown", that detail caught me, I wonder how a secondary voice would sound behind the main melody. Otherwise, well structured and balanced as you usually do. I've listened to it a couple of times and I think it's one of my favorites (so far haha).

That's amazing. Great song and your voice is really clear and crisp. Kind of like a desert hymn!

Well done! A lesson that chord sophistication does not determine the outcome.

Good news: you're only four tracks into 2024, and so far all your tracks have a similar signature of clean mixing, interesting lyrics, strong vocals, and spot-on instrumental performance.  (But no pressure do that for the next 48 weeks tongue)

This track is especially impressive for keeping up those trends as a replacement project, made on short notice.  Two specific shout-outs:  1.) The chord progressions' use of subtle coloring to deepen emotion at key moments (regaining my lazy ears' attention when they assume what's coming next).   2.) There's an intriguing tension between the vocals' pop-punk mannerisms and the bucolic scene of the natural world described by the lyrics.  Strangely: this is not the first spring ballad using unexpected genre elements I've heard this year—but the effect in both cases has been a weird implication of authenticity (like: Why would someone steeped in such a seemingly unrelated style have decided to write a song about this?  It must have genuinely moved them, so I should pay attention…).

Very nice piece, something for the songbook you take along when you go hiking with a bunch of friends and a guitar! Ahh I haven't been on one of those for so long, it's bringing me back!

It's super cool to write songs like this because you can play them anywhere!

I like the specific topic: Arizona, spring, desert. Even though you can play it anywhere it's gonna hit so perfectly in like ~5 years when you will randomly perform it for some friends at the perfect relevant moment and place big_smile

About the production: very nice clear sounds all around. The recording is great. Wonder if it could sound even more vibey with some tape plugin or slight reverb or something, I don't know how to do it but basically to situate it in some kinda space to make the imagery even more vivid. It's just an idea tho. As it is, the song is amazing! well done and thx for sharing!

excellent work. it's amazing what a deadline can bring out of us, eh?

Very fun! I think the percussive elements add a lot of flavor.

Cool melody!
And that shaker.

But seriously, that shaker.

you are not wrong about the shakers, great stuff all round,

An oasis vibe is in the air. Very good production

Great song! I can hear oasis vibe as well. I'm bobbing along.

I tend to often approach tracks from the riff - this is the first time I have considered that the drums is playing the riff but you really caught something with that drums and hand drums - that sounds like a riff. But you also captured something magic in this track. The lyrics and the atmosphere really take us to this place, as the early dawn in the desert as the air is crisp and life seems much clearer. One of my favorite tracks this year so far! Great singing there as well. Loving this.

Heh yeah, neat coincidence. I'm ready for the rain to stop because my roof really needs to get redone, so this was supposed to be a celebration of the sun finally coming out. But here we are, another stormy weekend. wtf, mate?

Yeah, all written and recorded in a day! Thanks. We'll see if I can keep it up.

Hello, desert neighbor! Thanks! I lived in LV, NV for about 7 years also (near Nellis).

Thanks much! I wasn't sure about that melody drop, but I kinda boxed myself in with the Am/G thing, and it sounded weird without it. Glad you like it!

Thanks a ton. I appreciate that you noticed the little details like the chord progression subtly shifting to keep a little bit of movement. And indeed, we have been getting inundated by the rain lately, and it just so happened that the day this was written, you could tell from first thing in the morning that it was going to be a beautiful warm weather day, and I was channeling my excitement about that.

Thanks for the comments and ideas. I will add this one to the BR acoustic songbook.

I think using effects "creatively" is not one of my production strengths, I should think about this more. Thanks again!

Thanks! I hadn't looked at it this way, but I'm glad the percussion had that effect for you. Glad you enjoyed it!

Original progression or not, the vocals are spectacular, especially for a quick performance.

that's weird, I actually came here to say the exact same thing smile

this is amazing that this is a last minute piece

THE BLIGHTER'S EP WAS AWESOME!

Impressive for 6 hours, even have the aux procussion parts.  Very cool song.
