A Lot Like Lies

By blighters_rock on January 6, 2024 6:46 am

Hello old friends and new. It's good to be back! 2022 was my first WB, and it was a transformative experience. I'm looking forward to our shared highs and lows as we do this one more time.

This one is a punk rocker. Somewhere between Rise Against, Midtown, and Blink-182.

Welcome back!

Very nice pop punk piece, love the guitars harmonies. Drums sounds crisp, are they acoustic tracked drums?

Solid first submissions. (I feel bad about mine now... ooops. I'll come back stronger. wink )

Damn dude, massive improvements over the past year in many ways. The mix is stellar and your vocals have been taken up more than a notch. I can tell you aren't straining and you seem to be projecting comfortably. I should take some notes wink. As for the mix, the intro does a great job of demonstrating the space between each of the instruments since you can hear the two panned guitars introduced at separate times, shortly followed by that crisp bass tone. The snare also has a perfect "pop" to it. And the dynamics as so good, like that pause at 1:04. All in all, excellent upbeat punk rock tune, tons of energy and everything grabs at my attention.

amazing work, everything is just tonally spot on. awesome guitar solo and breakdown!

Excellent! Love the bass line and tone. Intro and lyrics are very cool. Rock on.

Welcome back!  The guitars sound great on this and you really nailed the pop punk vibe.  Looking forward to hearing some rock this year.

Genuinely pro level work. Your mixing and production are top notch

Hey Blighters, happy 2024 and happy to see you here again!

Perfect way to start the year with a cool punk song, which captures the vibe of late 90s punk, especially with the choruses, the perfect guitar and bass sound, the singing. That bass tone you're capturing is especially great. I love the composition there! I could listen to a whole album of this. I need to dust off my skateboard and go do some kickflips now. Looking forward to more tracks!

So good in all aspects, nice!

I love it, perfectly structured, executed, recorded and mixed. You definitely play in another league man!

Oh hell yeah. Those guitars right from the intro. Like the panning. Then with the bass. Cool drive throughout. And that hook at the chorus 'sounds a lot like lies' with the extra vocals is awesome. Like the use of gaps as well for emphasis. Damn this is a high mark for week 1. Awesome work dude.

I was always gonna like this one by you given those influences, super dig! More, please!
Also didn't know you were a Midtown fan, they were one of my faves back when! Also really enjoyed the new Blink album, back to form with Tom.

Glad you're back too. Look forward to hear more!

I like the fly away sound of your vocals. I am taking lessons on the instrumentation. You are writing complete songs that sound very finished and complement your vocals. Good work.

Good stuff!  Great sounds and structure

Wow, this is fantastic! Great mix and songwriting! I think you skillfully tackled this sound. Welcome back!

welcome back! super cool track! it really feels polished and everything sounds clear and well glued. the composition is awesome, has a bridge and everything!

I would say for extra punch there could be more low end in the mix. when listening after some of the other tracks, albeit in totally different genre of some kind of funky techno type beats, the bass is lacking in yours and it's not fair cause the composition is super cool and would hit even harder with better sound. I'm not sure that simply more low end would fix it but it's just a gut feeling, that something can be done to the sound. Or depends what you are going for, there are def rock bands that sound like this.

Anyway great to hear your music again, excited to hear more this year!

wonderful recording and mix of the instruments, congrats on week 1!

love the drive in the guitar parts and the way they intertwine in the beginning gets me riveted from the start. great songwriting! heart

Nice track! brings back memories

This is rocking!

guitars sound great. nailed the huge layered distorted sound. do you use any distressor compressors (or similar?)

wow. can you keep this level up for the coming 51 weeks? looking forward to it!

great composition, great mix, great playing, great drums. love it.

Solid, got me rocking! Happy 2024 WB!

This sounds awesome!

My partner overheard it from bed and demanded to know who it was and how to spell it (twice).  Sampled remarks: "This is awesome!" / "dude, this rocks" / (after being told it's the artist's week 1 weeklybeat:) "Tell them they're crushing it."  I don't know if they've ever been this excited about a weeklybeat before.

So: it looks like you have two new fans

(+fav, obviously)

You've really taken everything up several levels with this one! The vocals sound great, some of your best vocals yet. The bass sound is fantastic as well. It's got that low end fullness but still has a nice high end twang which sounds really good. The drums sound excellent and the lyrics are great as usual! Nice work. Looking forward to hearing more tunes this year!

WOW!

Also that Bass sounds crisp

This is actually amazing, it feels so complete, feels right at home in a skate park.

Thanks! Yes, acoustic drums. My room is still not as good as yours, but I'm getting better at mixing them big_smile

Thanks a ton! I have definitely been keeping busy in the off year trying to chisel away at my biggest weaknesses.

Thanks so much! I think I bottled a little bit of lightning here, and it just all magically came together. Hopefully I have my bottle ready next time lightning strikes.

Thanks! I haven't checked the new blink album yet, but I guess I need to. Yeah, that Midtown album "Living Well is the Best Revenge" was one of my faves, and also pretty much anything on Drive-Thru records back then. They wrote very poignantly about trust and betrayal. Glad to have you back as well, looking forward to your stuff!

Hey, welcome back! Thanks so much for the constructive criticism! I have changed my monitoring situation from Yamaha HS-5 + subwoofer to Avantone CLA-10A with no sub. I think I'm still learning to dial in the low end with this setup. Please keep the feedback coming.

Funny you ask that. I've been ogling distressors on eBay and Reverb for a while now. Haven't gotten a hardware unit, but I just picked up the UAD distressor as part of a bundle over the holidays. This is literally the first mix where I've used one. Still learning it, but I used it on some of the drums and vocals. Good ear! Also a bunch of 1176 and SSL bus comp.

Short answer: no. But, I really wanted to push hard for week 1 and set a high bar for myself. Hopefully I can top it a couple times this year.

This comment wins! heart heart heart. I wish they could all be this good, but hopefully at least a couple more this year will perk both of your ears up. Thanks a ton, to you and your partner.

Thanks, mate! It's exciting to hear that the work I've been putting in on singing is paying off.
