Floating In The Laguna

By Bleeoop on February 8, 2026 4:47 pm

I heard a very hypnotic ambient experimental piece playing at my local record store and I haven't been able to think about other music much, but I am still happy about this week's tune, it feels peaceful.

The arpeggio hooked me. That arp plus with the piano at 2:40 or so, riding into that massive wash gets a chef's kiss.

This is a pleasant place to float.  It feels soothing and restorative.

Hooked from the first second. Curious to know what you used to make this

For obvious reasons, I was dragged by the title wink

Really peaceful vibes here. Floaty and very very dreamy. And... can I ask what kind of EQ / Plugin are you using for that "old tape" patina on your tracks ?

The harp / koto samples are superb. I really love this one

Nice ambience, peaceful, flowing. Interesting use of the minor 7th giving some tension instead of going for a softer maj7th. Nice big reverbs.

thank you so much. I'll respond here to both the comments with a little bit about the process because it's kind of weird. I make all my tracks in FL studio, I am trying here and there to experiment with more 'traditional' ambient techniques but it doesn't come naturally to me, I always wrote music in patterns and blocks starting from trackers and I still do it now. I mostly use softsynths and mostly Serum 2. I am constantly trying to make the sounds more analog and organic and that involves a lot of effects and processing. I use pro q4 for eqing, Valhalla reverbs and delays, I don't like lo-fi or tape plugins very much but I use aberrant dsp sketchcassette and I really like it. I think the hardest part of getting the old sound is getting rid of the super bright frequencies and the deep subs in a 'soft' way that doesn't make it super obvious and that's usually a combination of shelves and filters and doing that again but more in the sends and returns.

btw first few seconds of this I expected to hear a sexy voice saying "N .... T ...  S .. . . . " like on [nts.live](https://www.nts.live/infinite-mixtapes)

thanks! I have only a baby level grasp of music theory so I stumble into stuff by accident. Also that reminded me I need to listen to more NTS, always super inspiring stuff

this track is incredibly beautiful. heart

can you say more about this?  ^
like you are setting up aux sends to run tracks through EQ shelves and filters? are you mixing those back in with the un-effected sound? just trying to understand. whatever you are doing is working, so lush and comforting!

oh it's the warawaras!! ok i'm trying to explain something very simple I am just struggling with the words, but basically two things, the main one for me is when I'm listening to a synth sound from serum I usually think oh yeah this sounds too bright and shiny, but if I turn the filter down then it suddenly sounds like a synth with the filter turned down, it's not 'amalog' or whatever, and a decent way to approximate that idea for me is through a combination of a shelf and filter. Then if I'm adding reverb and delay on a send (which is pretty much always with this type of music) I think the same thing, oh this reverb sounds too bright and I filter and eq that as well, and usually the filters on the send / returns are much more steeper and harder, like very very dark especially for the reverb.

interesting, thank you for taking the time to further explain!
i will have to play around with this some.  smile

i do typically EQ my reverb sends, but it's usually kinda that "Abbey Road" approximation.
i think a while back i got paranoid about my mixes being too muddy, and i can sometimes go overboard and cut out too much of the low and dark to a point where there isn't enough body.
anyway! i'll stop blabbing and wish you the best as we head into a new week  heart

Lovely floaty, shining, consoling sounds

This feels very nice.
