WB02 — Rainy Days
My January theme: “Keep it moving"
[Challenge]
Make it in Logic Pro for iPad (which I’m still learning) and this time wanted to record some live DI bass / guitar.
[iPad OS]
- Logic Pro
- Splat-to-Clat AUv3
- Speldosa AUv3
- VHS Synth AUv3
- Electric Vintage AUv3
- Waverly Tables AUv3
- Skaka AUv3
- STARK guitar amp AUv3 (for bass & guitar)
[Reflection]
This one came together pretty last minute for me, I’m really hoping the next ones can be made with less of a crunch feeling. There’s definitely a barrier with my Logic Pro knowledge that’s affecting smooth creativity, as well as performance issues with certain plugins & I’m still learning which ones. I feel really happy with this at the end of the night, especially after open up the multitrack for a final mix session on headphones/speakers and getting to play with soundscapes. It started as creative flow just playing bass over a drum pattern, and went into the weeds of trying to fill it out and retain certain elements I was excited about (the big guitar chords in the middle), got stressful and daunting with Logic crashing, and then after a break and a finishing session of frantically recording quick MIDI takes in the synths mainly in the outro, came together into a finished piece I could mix and edit and come back to chill creativity flow with.
[Improvements]
The gentle pluck melody being so loose is nice but maybe could have been better if it was tighter. I haven’t had much time to sit with the mix, usually I like getting to go for a walk in my headphones but there’s no time before the deadline.
[Notes]
I exported the multitrack from Logic Pro and imported those into BandLab, where I keep all my mixes and stem projects. I finished the mix in BL and added the soundscapes and the tape warble effects after getting to sit with it away from Logic Pro which is much more cluttered (on an iPad Mini). This gave me two vital things — breathing room to feel the track out in a more finished state + purposeful flow for making sure the multitracks/stems get exported to an archive folder.
Love to hear what you think, feedback, mix notes, especially hearing artists that this track reminds you of that I should check out!
