haha

M8 tracker, all synthesized, no samples.
some retro groove in 15 or something.
in E, quarternote=110BPM (chosen based on all my previous WB entries; 110BPM and Emin were scarcer haha)

i really wish i had made more time to work on this.  yet again, left it to the last day, and only like 6hrs at that.

plus i was overambitious with a groove in 15 (15 is such a cool groove; like 4/4 but every 8th beat is stunted.  like "this room" - fearofdark )

plus i finally caught covid.

the tune bops, but there's so much more i wanted to do with it.

* if i revisited this, i would get @orangedrink on the trumpet in the end.  sans that, i had to settle for FM.  I ported the "flugelhorn" patch from my TX81Z; had to a/b compare each operator in isolation to get things dialed in right.  it still doesn't 100% match; i think the TX81Z might have different sine lookup tables that add some different harmonics.
* i was imagining this sort of future-retro vibe: "dads in space" - steven walking .  the big sawtooth chords are a bit lacking here, and i didn't get to explore bass sounds much.
* the end section wanted to be so much more lush, more layers, bigger soundscape.  i only had time to copypaste some bits.
* the 15 groove, that's the one part i'm like 100% happy with.  nailed it somehow.  though i did mess up a single phrase, making one track a beat off from intended in the end.

awesome. that 15 groove is tasty. really cool sounds, especially the cymbals.

I'm really digging that 15 groove, it's keeping it fresh all the way through. Good sounds, too.

Sounds pretty solid to me! The TX81Z has 8 unique waveforms right? Either way, the patch sounds great with just sine. Tracks like this make me think I should move from Sytrus to M8 for WB24!

I really like the drum sounds on this, particularly the snare in the breakdown around the 2nd minute mark. Adventurous tune for a 6-hour thing (and the bass is awesome).

Get well soon.

Yeah, the M8 FM is kind of its own beast. It does all the same things but in a slightly different way that makes ports a challenge. That said, this flugelhorn totally does it for me, and really makes the track!

I'm just getting over my COVID, and my advice is to set very modest expectations for your song this week. Still, the M8 is also the perfect “sick in bed” synth, so at least you’re covered, there.

double comment squad:

This track is amazing, but the noisy drone at 1:41 is breathtakingly beautiful.  Love how you animate the snare hits.  That website is crazy!  I might have to try it for a future video.

holy MOLY I got a shoutout in the track notes.  also, hope you feel better, sorry about the u know what sad

I'll try to record those trumpet notes for you, if I can play them

haha

exclusive WB comment: so impressed with the 15 section, also shoutout to fearofdark!!!

yes!  one of the elements i kept to solidify the 15 (vs. the half-time divisions of it).  similar to the metronome sound (which i originally made to ideate basslines/chords against)

ya, TX81z has a number of waves, but this patch happens to be sine only (the first brass patch i tried to port used other waves, but didn't sound as good in the end).
FM is so different on everty different implementation, totally worth exploring new ones at least just for kicks.

using the M8 FM engine for 3-voice polyphony is fun, because the fourth operator is still a versatile tool (iirc i used that for some dirt here?).
i've been considering revisiting some tracks for the end of the year

TIL weeklybeats truncates comments at emojis.

addendum to reply to orangedrink:
lmao "the 15 section" it's all in 15...  also i can only dream of making one track at the level of fearofdark's songwriting ("there'll always be next year" is my fav track of all time i think)

ya even though musically it feels unfinished, and it's a pretty big contrast between the first and second halves, the sounds keep it continuous (e.g. the snare is the same i think?  just a different octave?)
