Renegade Radio

By NWSPR on July 31, 2022 11:58 pm

A short sci-fi synth punk ditty about the underground radio and TV networks launched by the resistance after the collapse of the republic and the rise of the Christian Nationalist Front.  The red militias restrict travel to blue union but can't stop the renegade radio on shortwave frequencies. Keep it real low so the pigs can't dance.

This track is another in a series of music featuring the Moog Liberation as lead synth and backed by similar instruments each week to make a more cohesive "band" kind of sound.  This is the fourth.  I'll probably do two more in a similar fashion.  I like the idea of working with a theme.  Definitely makes it easier to come up with ideas.

Like last week, this is speed trash but I'm happy with it.  I recorded in two hours this morning.  Went to brunch with a few friends then came back and spent an hour and a half cleaning it up.  The mix is shitty but I'll fix it up a bit more when I have time.  On to the next one. Happy week 30!!!

I love the vibes of this track! The pop feel, with the punk attitude. Even if the mix is a bit dirty, I think it contributes to the feel of the song, as if it were played live in a small club full of people. Wanna dance to this one.

the track is perfect. what else can I say. another smashhit by NWSPR.

like if "franco un-american" came out in the 80s with 2020's political landscape.

i also had fun imagining this punk track being encoded and secretly transmitted via shortwave radio, but then it's so rad you can hear its muffled fuzz during transmission (but still low enough so the pigs can't dance).

You always seem to bring a really fun energy to your tracks and this is no exception.  That synth sounds awesome.  Really dig the little "woo-ooo's".

i too got a secret short wave transmission vibe big_smile good stuff.

Great band you've made, this is great.

Had me with those opening guitar chords but the vocal "woo oooh" sealed it.  The whole groove of the track has an invigorating energy to it.  *nods head to the lowness*

random comment: the mixing and mastering on this is really good.

oops, just read that you said the mix is bad.  HMMMM

*awkward face*

Cool sound! v punk. solid track for 2h of work! Synth is great, vocal effects also nice, altho couldn't understand a word. I guess a live gig with this sound would be cooler than just tracks like this. Cool story tho, it could be part of something else too, like an album with more context to the story or a movie or something.

Really like the song (keep it real low so the pigs can't dance.)

VINDICATED!

Would you necessarily want that curve to be a flat line?  What does that mean exactly?  I think I have this on my computer but don't know how to use it.

The plug-in collected representative curves of common frequency levels. If you run a bunch of music you like thru it you will see that almost all of it will have some sections that will be prominently outside the sausage region, but the overall balance is important. The sausage is an average range of levels across many tracks, and what it’s useful for is if your bass or mids or highs are consistently missing / too loud. But outside of that—trust yourself and be honest about what your material is actually doing, a low pitched WUB WUB ambience should not be a flat line. Skrillex and Noisia’s SUPERSONIC, for example, has waaaay more bass than the averages account for, and that’s the right thing to do. Boards of Canada’s MHTRTC has lofi sections that have nowhere near the amount of highs than the averages, again, for a good reason. Tldr: just make it work; plug-in is useful to gain more insight, particularly if monitoring is not ideal.

All of you overdriven guitar folks (OD, NWSPR, ViridianLoom, BlightersRock, and others) have some really good mixes this year. In this track’s case it passes the laptop speakers test, meaning I could hear the drums cut through the distortion even at low levels. One piece of advice that served me over the years is always check stuff super quiet — helps hear compression, and also is a good sanity check for what’s important. This track is worth hearing very quietly, it’s remarkably clear.

These comments up here are fun.
I think the mix is not so bad.
This rocks. I'd see this band.
What a story, distopian rock rebellion.

Ha ha... I'm gonna come up with the Renegade Radio dance and fax everyone the steps. All the kids are doing it.  Thanks for listening!

Loving that funky Abe Lincoln.  He's knows what's up. It's all about keeping the frequencies low and off the police state scanners smile Thanks for checking it out and passing along video. NOFX is epic and always welcome!

I don't know why I haven't worked the Wooo-ooos in all my songs.  So much fun :0  Thanks!

If the ionosphere is just right, our radio waves sync up!

Too bad the drummer just got arrested and the singer is always late for practice. (My imaginary band has a back story)

Ahhh... But NO guitars! My experiment is a success. All Moog Liberation smile. Thanks!

Thanks!  It was more that the level of the instruments were not what I wanted.  It's a basic song but I had a fun call and response with the instruments that came out flatter than what I was going for.  Oh wait, I had a compressor on the mix. Crap! Literally just thought that one through.

Thanks!  Lately I've been spending more time writing songs in my head and less time recording. It also helps that the song is super basic. I was listening to the Ramones while gardening and thought, "I'll do a Rock-n-Roll High School kind of comp smile

Apparently the chart shows I've peaked and it's all down hill from here.  Data is cruel.

You lost me at sausage. Is that good or bad? smile And now I'm hungry for a vegan Italian sausage sandwich.  At least you didn't use a donut graph.

The band may be imaginary... unfortunately the dystopian, not so much sad Thanks for checking it out!
