this week's inspiration started from a clip a random friend on IG posted: a three-part group "Tiny Habits" doing a small acappella of "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac.
they start in unison, but when they open up the harmonies i got chills. so i wanted to explore/play with melody and sound and so went to the 'operator' instrument in ableton to start simple.
i usually start with percussion/beats, and i'm still very much developing my music theory/melody/harmony knowledge and skills, so this was really hard for me (and also why it generally loops, like most of my work to date so far). but it was fun to play with a little sound design, to learn how to use the envelope to open up the filter, and to do some layering to play and experiment with that.
what came out is this swelling, lush piece of sorts (probably inspired by the likes of
(side note: is there a way to tag someone in comments/descriptions without quoting them?) who has really lush cinematic pieces from their analog stuff. i went with it and added some swelling strings, and then played with some plucks and arps to give it something to cut through the ambient-ness.
it started feeling like an interlude or intermission piece to an album or something, since it's so different from what i usually do, so i went with that. i also got images of space and earth, so remembered "the overview effect" so threw in some samples around that. i didn't give myself time earlier in the week, so rushed to put this all together, and the voice samples were super last minute, so only did the tiniest of effects, automation, and mixing to give it some interesting blend into the interlude.
hope you enjoy this brief intermission
