Unalive coding

By WahSp on May 2, 2026 5:08 pm

I continued my trials with Tidal Cycles. This time I did make use of some of the long form sequencing possibilities it offers, so I cannot really call this live coding anymore. I made use of various VSTs, such as Zebra 3, Diva, Pure Lofi, and The Legend HZ. Drums with niphonat. Not much more to say than that I am still learning the ropes of Tidal Cycles and having fun.

Ooh clean, love the hats coming in.
Stankface when the kick n snare hits!
Nice tiny woosh before the beat comes back, im headbobbing!

Two tiny suggestions: the hats can be a bit louder, and the snare a bit wider, which will work well with the centered kick!

Thanks, also for the advice! The snare also sounds a bit too loud to me sometimes. What do you think? Also, with widening, you mean spreading it over the stereo image somehow?

To me the snare sounds fine, though a common joke on WB seems to be that one can search for the right snare for hours and not find it. You can always try lowering it a few db and see if it feels right, there is no right or wrong here.
As for the spreading over stereo image part, yea, there's multiple ways to skin that cat. You could find out how to create a "Haas" effect in your daw and tweak how much of it gets mixed, you could use vst's like Expanse3D (which I use), but im sure there are other/free alternatives available.
Another slightly odd-er but working approach could be to use the snare twice, one slightly panned to the right, the other to the left, and adjust the volume of both until it fits right. Again, try and find what works for you smile

Right, I guess I could do that with the stock delay in Ableton, but I played around a bit with Permut8 and found a way to do it with that smile It's a fun plugin smile. Thanks again!

Lovely light IDM vibes, especialy when that soft detuned line that comes in around 1:08.

To add to the conversation about widening the snare: a short reverb and/or chorus usually does the trick for me.

great feeling here!

Really nice vibe in this one! Love the melodies.
