Widower

I'm pretty happy with the general direction this song is going but I ran into some trouble when mixing it and I've also had a migraine since I woke up this morning (oof) so I'm running out of energy to keep working on this.

The biggest issue I'm hearing has to do with the drums. I recently got Addictive Drummer and it sounds pretty great when you load it up and throw on any of the drum loops that comes with it, but where I'm running into issues is routing those samples to their own tracks. I followed a tutorial to route everything and I'm getting the signal passed to all the tracks but a little too far into the project I noticed that when I solo the snare and really just listen to it, it lacks a lot of balls. It sounds as if the latch that controls the tension is off or something. Boosting the volume doesn't help and just draws attention to how weak it sounds. It's resonance just sounds kind of pathetic and the sound of the snare dies too quickly in the mix. It doesn't just feel like the problem affects the snare though, everything sounds a little too dry. Addictive Drums has it's own set of tools within the plugin to tailor the sound how you want (compression, EQ, reverb, etc.) but I'm already too deep into the project where I bypassed all that and my migraine worsens at the thought of redoing the drum mix from the beginning right now. I just want to get this submitted and take a nap with an icepack.

It is what it is though. Trying to just remind myself that WB is about challenging yourself to be creative and productive, which I was this week, so getting the song about 80% there is good enough until the year is over and I can (hopefully) come back and give the tune the love and attention it deserves to reach it's full potential.  (Also, one more nitpick, but does it sound to anyone else like the guitars/bass might be dragging behind the drums? I'm usually pretty good about playing to a click so I have no idea if I'm suddenly having like an input latency or something.)

The overall vibe I was going for here is supposed to be like this band True Widow . This was actually a first for me where, from the outset, I had an idea and I was more focused on trying to make it sound like the source material from a mix perspective rather than a compositional one. I think that's why I'm hung up on the drums, they boom and snap in there's so much space that reverberates around the music.

Heavy drivin track! Especially love that growling bass, So good! heart

Really like the tonal palette here. Great bass tone, and the guitar fits in the mix nicely too. The five string really shines on here.

There are a couple places where the bass timing maybe didn't sound as tight as usual, but I don't think I would have noticed if you didn't mention it.

From my perspective, I think the snare has a bit too much body and not quite enough crack. Perhaps some EQ to tailor it a little, combined with a slow attack compressor to allow the transient to poke through without making the whole snare feel too obtrusive. I think a short crack and a longer reverb tail might be what you want (having never heard the band you reference, so maybe not)

The interplay between the guitar and synth (or heavily effected guitar) in the mid section is great. Also the kinda back and forth rhythm between the guitars and bass right before the end is awesome.

Great job, strong track! Sorry abour the migraine, glad you were able to crank this out though.

I really appreciate the feedback, it's been helping me a lot when I go back to adjust my mixes. I'll revisit this track soon and experiment with the compressor and some verb to see if I can brighten it up. I'll need to do some reading on EQing snares so I can find out what frequencies affect the tone of the snare in different ways.

i like the snares body...

I agree with bligters_rock, though I'll say the snare is fine, it has a mood to it, and instead it's the crashes that feel a little off.

The drums did not sound bad at all to my ears. I loved the bass though, it has just the right tone, with a lot of body.

It all sounds sooo good to me.  Excellent guitar and bass tone and punchy drums. That bass is so full and deep but not muddy. Cool heavy sound! Love those hits starting at 3:54 and the shift into the effected guitars.

I really like all the sounds you got in here! The kit sounds nice and boomy. Got a bit of a garage rock feel to it. The bass also sounds fantastic as well. I think your bass playing is getting really good! I like that the bass is playing a prominent role in the music now, you really give it a unique voice. I also love the straight ahead rock feel you have going on for most of this one, it contrasts your more rhythmic style really nicely. I really like how you transition around 5:14 to that head banging outro! I think this is definitely one I'm going to want to listen to a few times, there's a lot of nice gems throughout. I just skipped randomly back to 2:05 and noticed that bass line that ascends in step with the kick. I was too busy listening to the guitar lead the first time but damn that's cool. Got a nice doom metal sound there! Those shimmery guitars at 2:30 are trance inducing. Like I said, gonna take a few listens to catch everything. Nice job!
