Pick a lane!

By ViridianLoom on February 15, 2026 10:16 pm

Critique is welcome on this tune since it's supposed to be a part of an album release at some point. Actually, if anyone is interested in helping me out with mastering stuff down the line, that would be massively appreciated. I really want to try getting the production right.

This is a tune I originally wrote and submitted to weeklybeats back in 2022 (Originally called Pick a side!), but I always felt like it needed some extra oomp and pizazz in some way. And since I've been sitting on the idea of releasing a digital fusion record for a minute now, I figured why not knock out these songs one at a time for my weeklybeats? Kind of gives me a nice mental break from feeling like I got to work on something brand new every week. I still *am* writing new stuff, but I've been all about taking it slow lately. So I kind of have this processing where I'm trying to work on multiple things at a time so I can still productively say I finished something every week. I'm pretty happy with how this one sounds now, as it doesn't feel as pointlessly repetitive as it once did. I still got quite a few more to work on, but I'm going to try avoiding uploading them *unless* they had a significant overhaul. I think that keeps things in the spirit of what we're trying to do here.

Oh, and if anyone knows any labels that I could reach out to for this kind of digital fusion stuff, let me know. I tried Ubiktune and C-jeff praised the songs I showed him but he said the label was closing down (RIP to a legendary label). Then I tried Infloresce Records at his suggestion but I never heard back from em. After the release of my other album, I really don't want to go the self-promo route.

mesmerizing heart

Pretty insane tune. Great stuff. I don't think there's a problem with how new it is. Nothing is truly zero to one. Taking a week to nail a significantly new mix and level of quality on something counts just as much as a taking a week to write something that may appear to be new but is in large part relying on harvesting more intangible momentum sources. At least speaking for myself, I'm very much doing a funneling method with explicit momentum harvesting as opposed to starting with file->new every week. Advantages and disadvantages, just what I want to work more on this year similar to your thinking.

I enjoyed the expanded notes and music notation. I can sometimes get away with counting things as syncopated 4/4 but not in this case. I tried 10 times to count it both ways described. Counting the metric modulation way is tough to get the pacing of it right. I find it more natural to count the 3:2 tied triplets way, I guess I'm drawing from marching band practice that has quite a few 3:2 tied triplets in the songs.

Awesome to hear this one coming back! That glittery harpish noise is so shiny, and your guitar solos are always fantastic. Hope you hear back from one of those labels soon - they'll be lucky to have you! big_smile

really entrancing, the staggering triplet sounding parts at the end of each bar work so well, the flow is fantastic heart

Nice flow! Got pulled in really fast!

Very cool!

I have to really think about it to be able to groove the "flow" myself, even with your notes.

Nice track again.

This one came on when I was at the gym, and it just grabbed me - the compound meters you have going on in here are insane. Fantastic composition - lush and rhythmic - keeps on building…and then guitars! Awesome.

I can see the vision and it's cool with the two competing lanes. It feels flowing when the guitars come in but at first I def got a bit disoriented by the switches. I think it has to do with being digital or played by hand. You can make the computer do the switches perfectly but you can't tell it to anticipate them in a human way, and I think there is some amount of micro anticipation in a groove like this (in any groove for that matter) that makes it more juicy when it's played vs programmed. Mby that can also be programmed in, not sure if it can become believable or it will always sound programmed, maybe it doesnt matter. But when I heard it, it def made me think of a programmed groove before I got into it and felt it. I think that human element is the important thing missing from a lot of music like this. You got it with the guitars tho.

"I don't want the music to feel fiddled with, as if I'm *trying* to make it weird for the sake of it."
Good one, totally agree.

the guitar really pulls it all together heart
best of luck as you work on the release, and may you find the right home for it!

Didn’t heard the previous version of this track : as pointed the composition is top notch and the rhythmic part is awesome. Feels like a late Zappa track in a way. I agree with others regarding the « human » part : the guitar at the end instantly adds depth and soul, maybe tiny touches of live arrangements will do the trick? Anyway this is very very good !

I really love the B section of this song. Not as flashy as A, but the groove is a little more stable (to my taste), and the way it ascends out of it is superb. Nice one!

Love that triplet feel.  For me it just always makes things sound much awesomer and bad ace..  The B section is awesome and those almost djenty guitar riffs are so good.  I wish knew of more labels, I've always had a rough experience trying to find the right ones by genre or that are actually accepting demos.  Excellent work!

This tune is really great work. I've listened to it a few times this week but only just got around to commenting now. Especially with the polish and other touches you added I think this song would stand alongside the other tracks on that playlist of chiptunes and digital fusion stuff you gave me back in the day! Really excellent work. The rhythms are super catchy and the choice of instrumentation for it is very satisfying to the ears. The bass sound is so round and warm, I feel like it compliments the sparklier things going on very well.

JRPG boss battle vibes here. I agree with the other commenters that the compound time signature is very pleasant.

(and hey, we're missing you in W8)

What are you thinking it needs in terms of production? Sounds very done to me.

Just needs some Drum Bender vocals but otherwise quite perfect! I loved the time changes and looking at the notation made my brain hurt. Liked the guitar a lot, but I also like that I had to wait for it a little. great work as ever, thank you!

Oh wow that beat is awesome - it feels like one is about to fall and then catch themselves up. Again and again. That must be what it sounds like to walk on the sand of Dune to avoid calling in the big worms.

just relistening over hurr and chugging along don't mind me smile  also in all my mild music theory understanding i wish i could download ala Keanu_Matrix sight reading skilz. "woahhh i know 6/8!"

This is awesome! It's got a little bit of a dizzy/disorienting feel with that time signature change, and I really like it. One thought (not really a criticism or piece of feedback, just an idea) is that maybe you could add a crazy modulated delay just on those sections? I think it would fit that disoriented feeling really well—just an idea. Nice job!

zag on 'em! Really enjoy the steady build on this, really ripping by the time guitars come in, and the mix feels pretty clean to me.
