Evaporating Rain

By ViridianLoom on May 1, 2022 9:47 pm

So with the exception of Microtonic for the drums (it's just a faster way to generate some drum beats, a skill that still doesn't come naturally to me) I wrote this entirely with Synth1. Mostly as a demonstration for a friend who's interested in getting into making music for weeklybeats at some point, because I know the feeling of spending a lot of money on software can be intimidating.

My musical focus for this last week has mostly been working on my bass playing. Been really into an artist called McBaise who is just, ugh, so fucking good. His basslines are killer, and I've been listening to his tunes and trying to closely replicate (sloppy progress update) the way he's playing so I could hopefully absorb some of his stylings and integrate them into my own music. They say a lot of the tone is in the fingers for bass playing so I've been experimenting with palm muting, using only my thumb to pluck, and trying to really dig my fingers in deeper when hitting the strings. There's also his phrasing, he manages to keep the bassline grounded while seamlessly blending in little melodic improvisations. There's just so much I'm interested in learning from his music. Anyways, I've been so focused on technique that I haven't really cared to write anything so I came up with this idea pretty quickly last night and did a fast mix. I haven't even listened to it really since exporting, so here's the hoping it didn't sound bad.

This all gels together really nicely. Really nice work. Thanks for the McBaise reminder, I'm going to listen to some stuff this week. I need to learn to play finger-style bass. Maybe someday.

Dude this sounds awesome! I'm super into this. I love how heavy and dark it sounds. Are you using a koto VST for some of the melody leads? It sounds really good. I'm super impressed with what you did in such a short time frame. The rhythm and melodic ideas in this one are superb! Nice job!

I really like both the constraint of "help someone get started" and the lovely sounds you have. Excellent writing. heart

This is V Loomy.

I really like the bass part, interesting to read about the process and the inspiration. Also cool that you did this in the spirit of helping someone else. Enjoyed the listen/ smile

I like the bass variations you use, especially the stops around 0:27 for instance, which brings a lot of variety and dynamic into the sound. The synth layers with their exotic vibe remind me of the Dune videogame soundtrack, by Cryo.

You are such a good friend!

"Oh you want to learn how to play music?  Lemme just whip up an incredible beat and sick chord progression with tons of sonic variety and mix it very well for yaaaaa"

can you come over to my house and teach me guitar chords??? smile (great stuff, love the title too)

I'm trying to convert as many people as I can to Mcbaise so check out the song "Waterslide" and the entire album "Tubes". It's like, relentlessly groovy.

I can show you some jazzy chord shapes for guitar! but I certainly don't know the theory about the things I do sometimes haha. I can mostly just explain how I come up with progressions rather than why they work.
