Envy is Unbecoming

By ViridianLoom on June 2, 2024 8:43 pm

Fairly busy this week and weekend, unfortunately. Work and house-chores related. Was sitting around last night and noodling on my acoustic guitar and came up with some pieces that I liked, but I also didn't want to get too bogged down with trying to build layers or add in other stuff. For me, it's nice sometimes to just sit in a low light room by myself in a quiet house and just play on the acoustic without really trying to write a full-fledged song.

My own house doesn't really have quiet moments anymore, but when I do get them I usually pick up a bass and just drift for as long as I can.

There's usually something special there everytime, in one way or another.

Track feels like a half lit room. I enjoyed it.

I do love me a WB Noodle... it's funny how often folks on here are like "just a quick noodle this week..." and I expect this...

... and I get this...

This is just lovely, btw.  Perfect reverb for the vibe.  Adds, a really nice high-end shimmer without being overwhelming or masking the guitar.

Fine fine music. a wonderland of chords.  beautiful playing.

Def agree the guitar is sitting in such a lovely space with the perfect amount of verbage.  Lovely performance and such soothing chords.  Love hearing the slides and bits of the acoustic.  It's a meditative listen and I can imagine must be even more playing it in a quiet space.  Bravo!

Joking aside, this is a song, even without lyrics. The 30-second B section at 2:00 is a particularly fantastic break. Makes the return of the arpeggios feel somewhat dramatic. Fantastic intuition.

The guitar sound is somewhere between Dominic Miller and "Lips of Ashes", no notes, five stars.

from the first few notes I love this.
great sound, clean but a bit textured with tasty reverb. good low light atmosphere

A wholesome and important message. Wish I'd thought of it. tongue

Seriously though, these are some very pretty guitar musings. heart Perfect for a quiet moment.

^ that part

really lovely playing, and presentation. "simple" can have a negative connotation, but something about a singiluar element

oops, hit submit accidentally when trying to correct my spelling.

something about a singular element sitting on the right bench with the right spotlight can be so powerful and moving. you nailed it here.

Really enjoyed listening to this one. Love the change of pace around the middle, and when the first theme comes back at 2:40 it's really nice. Great playing and the recording sounds good too - doesn't feel like a casual noodle at all.

I like the relative simplicity of this in terms of instrumentation. It makes the guitar really shine, but it also must be stressful as you have little room for error! Everything is ufront, but it's executed flawlessly. Beautiful tones building a nice atmosphere.

Half lit/half light has always been one of my favorite descriptors for a type of vibe so I appreciate it

I mean, Mac n Cheese with some Sriracha sounds pretty fire right now. Sriracha has been out of stock at my grocery store for a long time and I just saw some yesterday, but the color of the sauce looks more brown now and it has me feeling a little sus...

...what were we talking about? Oh right, thank you for the lovely comment smile I actually dialed my reverb back a little bit this time to sound a bit more tasteful so I'm glad you picked up on that, haha. I do love swimming in a sea of reverb sometimes.

Haha thanks. In my youth (feels like such a weird thing to write nowadays, I'm 34 and I'm referring to when I was like 17, half a life time ago) I listened to a ton of Candy Rat artists on youtube. You might know the types: Andy Mckee, Antoine Dufour, Pino Forastiere, Sergio Altamura, etc. All phenomenal acoustic guitar players who fuse rhythm guitar, percussion included, with melody driven compositions. So when I sit down and write something like this by comparison, it feels incomplete or lacking. My solution to making it feel a little more like a finished song lately has been to sing over it but I just didn't feel like it last week and I was in a broody headspace which is what the title of the song reflects, haha. But your comment does have me thinking that maybe I should try things like this more often on my down weeks and see what resonates with people because maybe I could revisit it later for some final touches.

Haha thanks! I had written down some dour lyrics because I had encountered someone's music recently which reflected the exact kind of thing I've been wanting to write lately but I felt like they were doing it better. But as I was writing I was like "Man, I sound really lame right now and this is not the kind of vibe I want to put out into the world" - So I just titled the song how I felt as a reminder for myself in the future to not fall into that trap. Envy has been a trap of mine for a long time and I think a big thing that has held me back in many ways. So I'm happy the title resonated with you (as well as the music!)

Hey man, when I log in and see two comments instead of one my dopamine rat brain is like "hehehe yesssssss commentssss", haha. Appreciate the kind comment! and I totally agree with "simple" feeling like it has a negative connotation sometimes but I do want to learn to embrace "simple" as a complete work.

Very pretty sounding:)
