Departure

Weird song alert! Kind of experimenting with a different kind of sound here and taking a risk with my vocals.
Spent quite a bit of time on this and I ended up losing perspective during the mixing process. I'd love to hear any feedback on how I could have mixed this better. I can never really quite figure out how to get the drums to sit right in a mix and I used both an electric and acoustic kit here.

Sing to me
Sweet child of rhapsody
Soon shall we bear this flame across the open sea
A thousand times before
Sailing out with you
Fragments of a time
Eroded away by abyssal brine
A light within the dark, enrapturing
A voice rising up from the deep
Veering into dark
I’m searching for the glint of your memory
Catching glimpse of the silver frame
Grasping for the chain, rusted by waves
Looking towards the sky
Wishing for ending days
Pray within the grave
Reuniting us again
Feel it in the air
Shadows beneath
Woken from sleep
Pulled underneath

I tried making something more upbeat and — erm — “traditional”, but none of those ideas I came up with were particularly inspiring. But I found this synth preset in Absynth that I dug and made a little thing I thought was cool. But then another problem arose where I couldn’t figure out what key to put the song in since the absynth patch is a unison major 7 chord that I keep moving around, effectively changing the key center like 3 times.
So with that I already broke the keep it simple rule. So I embraced that dissonance, resulting in some strange vocal melodies. I managed to squeeze a section in A minor in without the mood changing drastically, so that’s nice. Experimented with phrasing on my solos. I had an idea where I wanted to incorporate a transition into the ending section similar to Bjork’s Joga where there’s a gnarly sounding ambient drum build up but my attempts failed. I *REALLY* should just reach out to someone and ask for a collab who knows how to do that, but I’m just too bashful.
Overall, I *like* that I experimented with something different. And it also gave me more practice in singing (especially trying to reach those higher notes, I got one good head voice to falsetto register flip in there). Is it good? I mean obviously that’s subjective, but to me I dunno. It’s hard to put a lot of hours into something and then be objective about it, I think that’s where the doubt comes from.
