Undulate Dawn

Managed to not fall down this week so that's a good start.  I started exploring pads in Zebra and had one of those experiences where every patch felt like it could be the start of something pleasing.  I wanted to just wrap myself in long drawn out simple soothing chords. Turned the bpm down to 70.  Just the swaying of a soft warm pad always helps me zone out and distract myself.  As I started to noodle around for some piano melody ideas and get into a slow jam Ableton said "Hold my beer/mouse".  *POOF* went the ableton full screen and project.  Ok that's fine (I overconfidently said) I'll just reopen it and the handy recover feature will kick in and I'll be right back where I was.  Reopened ableton and it even loads quicker with the new version annnnd *POOF* ......... ohhhhhhh noooooooooeees come baaaaack yikes yikes yikes
I couldn't recover the darn thing! Lost a very productive couple of hours of ideas worth unsuccessfully restarting my computer like a doofus.  Even though it had a backup from earlier that backup did not have a huge piano melody I accidentally noodled and couldn't recall.  So this track sorta took a slightly different more ambient direction in that it didn't get developed more.  I might have had added a few more lines here and there but overall I'm happy with the result.  Just a bit scared now that I might have another ableton issue leering it's eyes upon me.  I spent the majority of this week's process feeling like if I didn't finish (export) the song sooner it was going to crash again and I was going to be back to where I was.  A bit paranoid feeling unfortunately.  I think that's another reason I had been gravitating towards the improvised piano solos.  Less computer headache possibilities.  Anywho hopefully I sort this out soon. Head is healing thank you for all the nice comments and especially checking in and listening each week. heart

The ableton story is the material of nightmares for the musician!

I Loooooooved that track. It is both delicate and epic. I like how the clean and epic piano lines go shoulder to shoulder with the grittier tones, that feel like organic crunches. The ending is beautiful. I can close my eyes and picture the flight over a magical landscape. That's a beautiful track to open the week!

Ugh, losing stuff you've worked on is the worst.  It reminds me of when I used to forget to save a paper I was working on for school and it would somehow close down and I'd lose the whole thing.  Terrible stuff.  This actually happened to me recently on a track I was working on, but fortunately I had saved fairly recently before that and I only lost a couple of parts that I was pretty easily able to recreate.  It was still annoying to have to spend the time doing that instead of progressing on.

I'd say you made the best of a bad situation though here.  This is really quite a beautiful and soothing listen.  It brings the positive feels in droves.

Good stuff happens. And shit happens. That’s life. Take it easy. Your song l hear is very very nice.

Yeah, you gotta save often. And once there's a project directory, still "save as" whenever you make a larger change.

I learned this in early 2000s working with Jeskola Buzz and Psycle, both of which crashed often and in the worst moments.

I'm sorry you lost work, all I can say is that this slow and open version is very pleasant to listen to regardless. There's plenty of "structural" piano here.

ah buddy, you can't seem to catch a break! but yes, at least no falls this week. gotta count that in the Win column!
i hope your beautiful piece cast out all the computer gremlins. it really was such a nice listen. i ended up just hitting play and letting all your tracks from this year play through as i needed some calm and inspiration this afternoon.
i hope this is received as a compliment - i had been listening to Roger Eno's incredible new album (The skies, they shift like chords...) before that, and your songs were such a nice compliment to that album.  heart

great work sir. love this.

thank you smile  that means a lot to read.  I'll have to give that album a listen.

Wow.
It's really unfortunate the original is lost at this point, but you recovered the week with this piece (and hopefully your head as well) significantly better than Ableton did your project. It's very, very pretty, straight out of space almost. So many cool sounds.

Very nice! Fully chillin

What a soundscape journey! Love the little noises in the background, the piano melody on top of the evolving pads just makes you feel something special. Favorited!

Every time I lose work I'm convinced it was for a reason and the recreation will be better.

What a gorgeous landscape of sound. Deep, gritty, and glittery - a perfect match for the artwork. heart
Glad to hear your head's feeling better! And sorry to hear you lost musical progress when Reaper crashed, that's always a pain.

Three minutes in on my first listen and I'm dreading the fact that the track will end in two minutes. Reminds me of the way I feel about a certain Boards of Canada song I could listen to on loop for hours. This track definitely fits the bill for an endlessly listenable soundscape for me!

Love that feeling when you find a nice pad sound, this is beautiful stuff, like all the little gremlin sounding percussion crunching in the background.  The extended outro is a bonus, nice!
