Susurrus

Howdy!  I apologize if this gets wordy.  I used every day, hour and minute to work on this week's track.  The idea started early Monday after hearing emily's week 4 track.  Her track featured a crow but for me personally it conjured visions of a flock of starlings doing their murmuration thingy.  So that led me to watch a ton of national geographic/youtube videos on murmurations. Like woah how cool.  How they don't crash into each other because no one is the leader.  They all just sort of flow around with the bird next to them and the bird next to them annnnd so on to evade predators and taxes.
So then I visited my favorite place to let my brain disappear.... freesound.org
I usually get super sidetracked on that website because of the sheer amount of samples, foley and field recordings available to use.  For a good hour I was totally listening to all sorts of machine hums cuz I wanted to get that particular Reznor_using_his_washer_machine_sound (ala the Downward Spiral).  Then I got back on track and listened to birds.  Stumbled upon one from the user dommygee, https://freesound.org/people/dommygee/sounds/254983/ (i apologize if this doesn't get properly coded into a working link as I'm trying to process my tiny brain thoughts before the deadline in time and I melt down when tasked with BBCode stuff)
So that set the basis for this track.  I threw it in an arpeggiator machine thingy I have where it will take different chunks of the sound file and based on the notes pressed will chuck out a random rhythm.  Used a part that had a sort of repetitive motion to it and bob is indeed someone's uncle.
As you can tell the weekly deadline buzz definitely affects my writing lol.

The music itself is pretty much the same ballpark of instrumentation in previous weeks.
The piano went off the rails a bit as I accidentally was trying to double an octave on a segway to a change in the track.  Well it sounded interesting.. then I fiddled with the INVERT button in Ableton's midi settings and went a lil wacky hitting some keys I don't think I ever have.  Soooo that was fun.

Now the moral of this week's story.
I was watching a video on VENUS THEORY's youtube channel called The Introverted Musician's Guide to Being Alone".  Without wasting too much more of your time, here's a quote from the video that really hit home with me and how it relates to the community of weeklybeats.

if you have an idea and you have something you want to say then it’s damn well worth doing
although at times isolation may be necessary to really get it out
the only way to truly understand your own ideas and what you have to say is to live some life
and gain a little bit of perspective and understand that it’s going to be your own

i guess it turns out it’s fun to have fun and connecting with people who inspire you is actually pretty damn inspiring
and suddenly being inspired you have a whole lot more to say.
it’s kind of funny how that works isn’t it.

Now obviously he was talking about actually getting out and meeting people.  HA.... But what I took from it related more to being able to converse and bounce opinions, ideas and suggestions off each other here for the past ten years.
Sometimes I get so much anxiety I can't even open an email from someone.  Yeesh I know.
But this website and the overall camaraderie that has always been present has always been so inspiring.
So whenever I say I've been on high inspiration lately it's thanks to this website and my WB frainds.

Ok I definitely am going to miss the deadline if i don't shut up.

Nice! The beat and piano have a real sense of gravity to them, and that finale is just gorgeous. And +1 what you were saying above about WB community feedback and encouragement! heart

I've always found it fascinating how flocks of birds move and can form intricate and beautiful patterns merely by responding to the birds immediately next to them.  The beat really gives this one some good energy and the whole track sounds positive and triumphant.

Damn buddy, that was really beautiful. And I love reading about your process and journey,  but also really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability.
Incredible work on this song. That you could turn that around in a week is mind-boggling.

1. Awesome idea for a track.  Would not have caught the bird thing had you not pointed it out.
2. @Devieus has definitely started a bird theme that is now running it course across WB.
3. The finger thing means the taxes.
4. How the hell do they not run into each other but still windows?
5. Back to the music, this is awesome.  Some serious piano chops throughout, and the upbeat part at ~3:15 amazing.

The level of polish and depth here is insane, I completely believe that you used every hour last week. What you've got sounds like it's ready to release. That central piano progression is haunting. Very impressive stuff, well done.

Love to see it when weeklybeats members are inspiring one another :3

Beautiful arrangement, very easy to get immersed into the vibes. That snappy snare is a great contrast to the soft instrumentation. The piano parts sound wonderful.

Thank you for the background, how you find inspiration. I love the triumphal development from minute 3, when the whole thing takes off and grows and grows. Very impressive. Have a beautiful week.

Wow, the work paid off, I really like the programmed drums and choices of samples there. Very cool industrial vibes, I ear the NIN influences. The out row is beautiful.

this is a real epic journey wizard - what a beautiful piece heart magic!

Beautiful! Great title, too.

A wonderful journey, capturing the starlings doing there swirly thing. When I lived in Portland, they (or some other bird. I think they were swifts maybe?) would do that every night for a certain time of year, swirling in formation into a large chimney where they slept, and hundreds of people would come and bring picnics and hang and watch, it was cool. Speaking of getting out and all that. That venus theory video sounds good, thanks for sharing, I can relate, I like your thoughts on that too. Stuff worth thinking on I think. Great melody here, and this all unfolds so well, the arps are nice, drums in their place, made me feel hopeful and excited. In the mood now to take a walk to the park, and maybe see a bird or two. Well done!
Here's those swifts I mentioned we'd watch, mezmerizing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHgEAIK8P18

hey thanks for reminding me about freesound, I sometimes feel like doing instrumental hip hop with samples for WB but then everything I feel attracted to is not licensed properly to put on here, I'll go dig a bit!

Great track, I love the feeling of elation that really convey the themes you had in mind

LOVE the quote - WB is such a gift for us all to meet and bounce ideas off of each other.  you're still "getting out and meeting people" on WB.  you're putting your music out here, listening to others, and you're OPEN to ideas, compliments, feedback, etc.

3:08 run was sooooo fun

great to read the journal entries as much as it is to hear the tunes

hugs!

I liked that background story, i can feel the excitement, the peculiar energy that comes when one is possessed by an idea, and it just flows naturally! And it is transparent in the music, how it evolves smoothly, organically, with elegance and never forced. I enjoyed this track very much, especially the second section beyond 3:00, which brings a sense of positive energy, pride, delight in the moment. Fav'ing this one.

Cool inspiration for the track and good find on freesound.org, that site can send you down a rabbit hole.  Drums came out really nice on this one, as others stated that shift in energy at 3:00 sounds so good.
