My Last Thoughts of You Will Become a Never-Ending Dream

By Tone Matrix on May 4, 2024 1:39 am

Started this week just trying to do something piano based.  I wasn't really finding anything that stuck.  I've been reading this book about Edgar Allan Poe called "A Mystery of Mysteries - the death and life of.."  There's a section in the book that talks about him losing his wife Virginia to tuberculosis.  It painted a picture of him by her bedside administering brief sips of wine that made her smile.  Without giving too much away it was kind of an emotional chapter.  After that I drifted off to sleep for a bit.  Woke up, slowly shuffled (no furniture mishaps) to the keyboard.  I still had Ableton loaded on a super slow drawn out paddy patch from Zebra2's synth.  I was feeling a bit melancholy at the time and just pictured how that sort of thing he dealt with would feel.  Related that feeling to my own personal regrets/wishes/mishaps/hopes and a few major chords and inversions came out.  Nothing ground breaking but it does provide a bit of solace to just close my eyes to slow ambient schtuff like this and drift away.  Thanks for reading my ramble and listening.  Hope you are well heart

PS.  My fav poem by Poe is "Alone".
PS2. Poe isn't the dark caricature he's made out to be yikes
PS3. The Baltimore Ravens football team was named after him yikes yikes
PS4. His tortoiseshell cat's name.... was... Catterrina!
PS5. I wrote a string trio/vocal trio piece my freshman year ('97) at college based on his "Alone" poem.  It was a bit too Edward Scissorhandsy with me on piano, but it was still one of my favorite live performances.  To play with future opera singers, string players was fun and I miss that naive inspiration/motivation I had back then.  H'ok thank you for taking a trip down memory ln, sappy ginger out.  *awkward exits*

edited for appreciation: in case you don't make it to the bottom, i wanted to thank yall!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for stopping by and all your kind comments and words really mean a lot.  I don't always repond to these comments but please know I read every single one and truly appreciate you taking the time to listen.  yay WB! *high_fivuh*   PS to those who were spamming the internet with the #ashT@g #releasethetapes week 19's track has yew_tubez_tape_release attached!  double yay WB!  Thank you again for the smiles

This is the perfect kind of slow-roll music for reading. Like, as I was reading through the description for your song about Edgar Allan Poe, this worked very well as a soundscape for me to envision that scene with him and his wife.

I've always meant to really dig into Poe's extended work. I only ever read the basic stuff like The Telltale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Raven. In particular, as silly as it seems, one of my favorite memories involving a quote from The Raven was that it was used to introduce the game "Eternal Darkness" for the Gamecube, haha.

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there. Wondering. Fearing. Doubting."
Oooo that shit hits hard.

Anyways, my wife is going to get a kick out of learning what Poe's cat was named, haha.

The balance between sentimentality and hopefulness is perfectly captured in your music. Very very very good.

aaahhhh so relaxing and beautiful! this track doesn't wanna be anything, it just is heart

thank you for this, so calming and centering.
also... Catterrina!
also also... we wanna see video of this Freshman Wizard peformance!!

Weird coincidence:  I also set "Alone" to a melody for a music class in college.  Probably around 1997.  I never had it performed or anything, it was more of just an exercise for an assignment.  I still remember how the melody I came up with went though.

Really nice ambience on this one.  This would make peak relaxation music.

I read the description as a narration over this beautiful piece. I think you've captured the emotion and how it moved you to create this and capture the process of all of that in the story. Great work!

Very lovely piece, I think it really captures a sense of loss and sorrow... but also a pieceful, inevitability of transition.  Very well suited to the inspiration.  Incidentally, I recently saw the world premiere of a ballet about Poe Poe: A Tale of Madness and some of Graham Reynolds' pieces from that score had remarkably similar feelings, and tone... Seems like Poe's actual life has a similar effect on people musically... which is kind of interesting.

This is a beautiful representation of the scene you described from the book. I closed my eyes on my second listen to try and envision that moment and the emotions it evoked. This also inspired me to go and read the poem "Alone", which I've never read before (although I've read many of Poe's other works).  Love the poem. Thanks for sharing such a soothing and meditative piece, which I will replay for some time.  Books are great inspirations for our music, as it was for mine this week as well.

A calm drifting ambient piece I wanted to close my eyes to. I do that maybe once a week, put on an apple music ambient sleep playlist and take a wee nap. This would go well on the playlist like that I think.
But I stayed awake and read your description. Great to hear how this came about. And Poe is amazing. I thought briefly of losing a loved one and being in a never-ending dream. Moved on and felt grateful my loved ones are still here. Awesome Poe facts. I wondered about the football team, but figured nah. So cool. I need to re-read Alone now. That piece you wrote and performed sounds need. Can something be to Edward Scissorhandsy? #RELEASETHETAPES!

did ya'll also have this cd collection? if i read this poem i now hear [rul=https://youtu.be/H4lBNbYks74?feature=shared]Basil[/url] in my head...

such a beautiful track wizard - i had it playing while that Basil video was on - it would have been a nicer backing track then the one that was used - i prefer yours smile

zebra such a lovely synth one of my favorites, really well done.

The way the layer of sounds ebb and flow remind me of a peaceful breathing, or the slow movement of waves on the beach. This track could be great for meditation actually, it has the right pace and the type of smooth textures that are just right.

Lush and awesome, such a lovely synth texture and the movement is so intentional and well-paced. The wishes/hopes in particular shine through for me.

In the past, I was working on a song to "Alone" lyrics with a vocalist friend, but we parted ways before it was done.

Your piece reminds me of the movie "The Fountain", which also deals with loss, kind of like the slice of life of Edgar you described.

It's fine with me, although I never recorded a version of it.  Like I said, I do remember the melody I came up with though so I could probably bang out a quick recording and send it to you. Let me know.

Great ambient piece, sometimes all you need is a lush pad and zone out.

thank you, that was just a happy accident how that worked out.  Sometimes my rambling fits the track haha.  But I was definitely inspired and that always makes it fun and productive.

woah lol yea that is a weird coincidence.  Poe was inspiring that year for sure! Def would love to hear it someday.  I didn't use the entire poem but those first few lines always got me.  Thanks for listening!

Thanks so much for the kind comments and listening.  That ballet looks pretty suhweet.  The score sounded awesome and eclectic.   Yea Poe has always been an inspiration..  Just his fondness for certain words always drew me.

Thank you very much.  It def is an emotional chapter and his works have a habit of doing that with me.  Especially his poem, "Alone".  Just his moods and wording always captured so nicely.  Books are always an inspiration and very helpful for song titles with all the wonderful quotes smile

awww shucks thank you that means a lot.  I enjoyed that video though!  I didn't have that cd but when I stumbled upon the poem I was at the lil library they had at that school.  Mostly music stuffs but they had a lil section for poetry and there was one of those big book o poems and i was just flipping through pages and poof Mr. Poe said "hey! psst! pale ginger kid use this for your song!" smile  My prof said it had to be lyrical and I wasn't a wordsmith so it felt just right at that time to use.  The way certain lines in this were sung always makes me happy and nostalgic when I haven't heard it in awhile.  Thanks so much for listening!  Oh and i recently did browse that particular cd via archive.org  Spoken Poe always sounds good to me.  Especially with that combo of voices smile

That synth (Zebra2) has a ton of pads that totally zone me out with just a few chords smile  It's a nice way to slow things down after a crazy week of reality.  Thanks for the kind comments and listening.  I've been enjoying your tracks a lot this year and glad I finally caught on smile

Damn mayhaps someday you can finish that project.  It's def one of my fav poems.  I've only seen The Fountain once but I enjoyed the music and it's visuals a lot.  Haven't heard Clint Mansell's score to that in awhile I'll have to check it out again thanks for listening smile

Thanks so much for the kind word!  Totally agree about pads.  Zebra2's patch library is full of them yikes  Minutes become hours with some of them smile
