Lost Somewhere Between Immensity and Eternity

By Tone Matrix on September 8, 2024 12:16 pm

i don’t own a 4 track or a tape machine anymore.
but i like to think my soon to be 46yr old brain is a bit like like a worn out vintage tape deck.
at least that’s what i’m conjuring up in my head as to why i sped up and down a bunch in this foggy_headed_smeared_noodle.

and yes my brain gears could use some maintenance or at least one of those cassette tape cleaners.
mayhaps a tiny bottle with cotton swab app-li-ca-tor?
i do apologize for this scatter-brained description…

so I found out the new BP meds i were prescribed have an 8% chance of upper respiratory infections. oooooh i win!
so this whole time i thought i just had an annoying sinus cold that had me dizzy and confused.
but hopefully i’ll be rid of that feeling soon because it def zapped me of any motivation/inspiration/energation to sit upright at the keyboard.

the day i attempted to record this i had a nice trifecta of afib all day, sinus volcanic activity and for dessert a migraine.  Butt! I would like to add the positive note of the week for me.  I was checking out Underworld's new track “Black Poppies”.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUL5J4JzRDA
and loved the quiet mostly vocal sound to it.  So of course that sent me down nostalgia lane with their music.  They had me remembering way back in ’97 when MTV used to be MusicTV and had a whole show dedicated to “electronic” music.  There were no blogs or streaming services to peruse over.  Waiting til 2am (or using a programmable vcr to record it, ooooh) I’d watch MTV Amp to broaden my musical horizons tongue

Underworld, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Orbital, FSOL, Prodigy, Fluke, Massive Attack, & Portishead were some of my favorites and had me scouring the used cd stores for their music.  Which led me to rediscover one of my fav tracks of Underworld’s (Pearl's Girl) that I prob had not listened to in at least 15 years.  Ooof  this is why I love music because listening to this track twice in a row (18mins) turned my migraine into a distant memory.

Sure I was still squinty and what not but gosh those chords at the intro and outro put me in Carl Sagan’s spaceship and away from the negative on this planet.

After I digested my music meds i was also hoping for some ambient inspiration from outside my window this weekend.
Unfortunately waiting til saturday the day of partays is not the smartest ideer.
turns out my new quiet neighbors are actually new loud neighbors with upgraded backyard patio products and oversized JBL speakers.
So this week’s inspiration comes from the box fan in my room, some rain from last week and neighborly walla.
Thanks to Carl Sagan for the track title that is prob better than the actual tones on the matrix.

tanks fer stoppin by!  i hope you are well and have a productive week ahead heart

I could hear this track as a soundtrack for one of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's movies like The City of the Lost Children. I like the restraint in the playing, very pretty while keeping the nostalgy. Beautiful melodies.

bud - hope you feel better and better soon!

this track is gorgeous!  such a vibe!

pearls girl is magic & thanks for linking the new track - listening just after hearing this

it's really neat to hear where that took you!

Second Toughest in the Infants came out in 1996 Wizard!!!!  Dubnobass... turned 30 this year - WHAT???

have you ever seen Karl's Diary?

get well soon! (that always sounds so bossy) wishing you feel better!

heart

100% can relate to this musical rabbit hole. I think our generation shares the same musical DNA (yes I am also old).

Also getting a tiny "it's a perfect day" vibe here. To my unending delight. Absolutely beautiful. What epiano are you using? It sounds lovely.

ahh so peaceful, nostalgic, and a bit enigmatic even. really love the subtle background sounds too. wonderful upload. hope you feel better soon

this is so soothing. i didn't have a migraine, but it 100% made me feel better and i listened multiple times.
thank you, and i hope this is a better week for you  heart

ps: that new Underworld ahhhhhh

This one hit me in my memories for sure, specifically my memories of playing the old (and I mean old) Kings Quest games Sierra put out on floppy disk.  Something about this track makes me think of the curiosity of exploration, so more Sagan still.  Thank you, this piece of music stirred something good.

Sucks about the meds, hopefully the next ones do the trick.  Take care of yourself

It makes me sad to hear about the cruel attacks to your health and the ongoing sickness. I really wish you are getting well. The noodle here has a melancholic „Charlie Brown looking out of the window on a rainy day“ feel to it. The field recording has a heavy impact on the atmosphere. Yes, the 90ies music was my biggest influence as well, sometimes I feel shocked, how fast the time has gone by and the musicians and me have gotten old.

This and False Dawn are such a nice, calming way to start my morning. I'm glad music is able to alleviate (some of) the pain/discomfort, will continue to send well wishes on the health front. I think your music has that same soothing quality that can be so invaluable to others.

Another wonderful rhodesy gem. Straight "L'Apocalypse des Animaux" material. I love it! Thank you for sharing.

Get better soon. I'm dealing with my own health stuff, not fun, so I super relate to the pain.

I second this. Extremely soothing and a pleasure to listen to

Sorry you haven't been feeling well.  This is so calm and soothing, it really does feel like it takes you to a healing place.  I miss the 90's and the 4-track days as well.  It's cool how music can take us back there a little bit.

Sweet cozy melody on this one, love the lofi texture of it, just makes you want to curl up in a blanket.  Here in Canada we also had a music channel called MuchMusic, can’t remember the name of the electronic show, but it also came on late night/early morning and was the only place to hear the music you mentioned above.  My parents just threw out my old VHS tapes of the recordings.  Pearls Girl is an absolute classic, just introduced it to my kids a few weeks ago, they found the vocals strange but enjoyed it, will have to check out Underworlds new album.

What a pretty e-piano piece. heart Love these chords and noodles. Sorry to hear you’re under the weather - hope you feel better soon!

I can totally relate on the health, these bodies of ours are rentals and I haven't been as gentle as I should have been. I have been dreaming lately of getting a tape machine (boy are they expensive), but I still haven't finished setting up my new studio (it's a disaster of wires and boxes in various stages of disarray) so maybe someday. Love the key noodling that always sounds so effortless. Do take care of your rental suit wishing your the best.

oh man I could listen to this 100 times in a row. I love when you go up an octave at 2:18. So relaxing. Ask your neighbors if you can play this on their JBL's

perfect title for this ethereal, mystical yet contemplative gem. The melody still with me after hear it. Questions its posing. Thanks for the track, thanks Carl for title, he's swell. Hope you you feel better, sounds like a nasty trifecta of nasty. Cool tunes you shared too though, thanks!

i lol'd

Soothing was the first word that came to mind, but this goes so far beyond that. Everything just melts away two bars in, and the world slows way, way, way down while these notes float effortlessly across the contours of my sedated brain. I love the lo-fi feel of this with all the extra little noises, pops, birds, soft static, and whatnot. That silky EP makes the melody ethereal and healing. I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health issues, and I hope you feel better.

Thank you! smile  The epiano is from my Roland RD700GX, the patch is called "Pure EP2" smile there are quite a few cool stage piano patches on this stage piano too.  I just tend to stick to this EP and the other Piano you hear in my piano noodles.  Thanks again!

Oh man, I love the tone on that epiano sound... I feel like I've said that a couple times before, but it's still true!  Lovely composition on this track.  It has a very like, final cut scene of a challenging puzzle game vibe... like as everything fades to white... and a medium cryptic poem scrolls across the screen.  Very nice.
