Darkillian's Peak

By Tone Matrix on January 21, 2024 10:36 pm

phew...
so my goal this year was to not play "time's tickin!" with the deadline each week.
I had thought I was going to be submitting a simple ambient piano track with a drone that just sorta meandered on one chord. I even had a lil mp3 done and it was ready to be released.
The next day apparently the creative gnomes lit a fire in my pantalones and I decided to upgrade my simple Kontakt player and get the full sampler version cuz coupon.  Then I realized I could hire Butch Vig as a drummer... ok fine, I downloaded his drumkit/sample add-on thingy.  But that totally opened up a bunch of ideas for fleshing out the original boring meandering excuse of a noodle I had originally recorded.  I usually just find a bunch of loops, chop em up and filter them beyond recognition for drums.  Which results in some floopy low boops and bops that support the piano.  So I went down the "how bout i add this?" rabbit hole and almost didn't make it back out in time.

Thankfully (chris_farley_air_quotes) "MASTER-ING" wasn't too much of a "HASSLE". Though since I was adding new parts almost every day of the week that left the mixing and finalizing for today.  Which then resulted in my usual "oh no what time is it, i can't see the clock!" or such favorites as
"did I just spend an hour thinking I mixed too hot when I instead just read my notes wrong!?"
Thank goodness for multiple undos..
But I am soooooo happy with the whole week's progress.  I don't think I can do this every week but I am feeling that writer's buzz so far this year.  Like notes were exploding out of my tiny lil noggin this week and I couldn't stop.  Next week may be a bit more piano so-lo though as you can tell I am a bit loopy from skipping a meal and/or drinking too much cawfee.
Oh right! See I almost forgot to mention that the lil "nahOoh" part at the end is actually me for the first time!  Ok it's one syllable... sampled and mangled... But it was just me singing into my phone a couple nah nahs I thought I could just slap in there.  I could not... So I sampled one syllable of a "nahOoh".
Thank you for listening and reading this abomination of a description.  I look forward to listening to your musics! Bai!

this is so joyful feeling - totally lifted my mood tonight

I love the distortion on the drums, and that descending run at 02:44 ヽ(♡‿♡)ノ

Awesome to hear you're feeling the writer's buzz.  It's so great when the inspiration is flowing.  You can tell on this one.  It feels like an epic journey.

This track kept giving me goosebumps or a heart skip again and againg. I was playing while working and there were so many parts where I just turned to the computer playing it with a big WOW.
Goosebump times: 1:57!!! Oh this was so sweet, epic and delicate at the same time.
The chord at 2:15 - i did the "oh that was good" weird musician face, as if I had stuck my tongue into a lemon.
4:05 section! More goosebumps.

You managed to create a beautiful immersive experience, with a lot of space. The piano grounds the piece, and you have this this synth, like an electric sizzle lead, which brings an element of digital into the piece. And it keeps soaring and soaring. That was so good!

This track is favorited. Probably my fav track of the year so far.

wow! feel like i just watched an incredible movie.

Wow!

Very cinematic. So you easy track became quite something.

Haha.... great description.  Creative inspiration definitely rules and I know what you mean when you don't always have that time to dump into creating a track each week.

This is subtly epic track due to the tasteful restraint.  I was always expecting it to explode but it never did which is good!  Some great piano progressions which shift nicely too.  Niiiiiiice.

The part introduced at 1:35 or so gave chills, then what it leads to at 1:55 with the big chords - wowza, there's some soaring magic happening here. The wizard at work, on the move and in conjuring. I agree about the tasteful restraint, but I think this does rise and explode, become grander. Maybe a mini-sposion, but still. Just noticed in the end, the buzzing percussive pad sounds like a voice? That's neat!
Ok, I just read your description (very entertaining) - the voice was you on the nahOoh - for the FIRST TIME! WOW, that's exciting. Extra neat, and sounded awesome. Glad the creative gnomes came to visit, and hope they come back often and the door is open.

That feel around the 2 minute mark hits just right. Perfect song to just zone out and vibe to. The piano melodies definitely stand out to me the most (probably that contrast of gentle wistfulness compared to that snappy snare)

I am a true sucker for sounds. I have avoided a massive library simply because I have a large UVI library but this is tempting for sure. Really great track!

SINGING

YASSSSSS

by week 52 you'll be singing a whole thingie with backup vox and everything, proud of you buddy!

great job!

lol at "Chris Farley Air Quotes" I could totally feel it.

I love your notes and writing as much as your music!  it's like you soundtrack your own crazy life.

Agree with above, enjoy reading your story each week of how the track came together, also trying to do things in short bursts, add a little each day rather then long session which drains you and I often find the best stuff happens in the first 10 to 15 minutes.  Another beautiful track this week, I also got that Komplete package, will probably never get through a third of all the stuff it includes, but definitely has some nice drums in there to use.

The spacious piano lifts my spirits. Yeah this is quite an epic piece!! I second orangedrink, hooray for singing! Thank you!

That snare smacks. Enjoying the slow, epic feel. Glad this was such a good experience for you. So wonderful when the music flows out effortlessly. Chasin' that high! Keep it up!

Glad you enjoyed making this, because it's a great time listening to it. Just be sure to pace yourself.
