A Mote Of Dust Suspended In A Sunbeam

By Tone Matrix on August 25, 2024 4:42 pm

I had started a completely different track Monday but the motiv-inspiration died quickly.  I thought I might try to force something out of that idea on friday but was dealing with another migraine that lingered on and off for 2 days.  I wanted to drench myself in some reverb so I turned to Valhalla's trusty Supermassive plugin.  The first random one I picked immediately sounded so nice.  Squinting in the dark my right hand did it's usual feel for the keys and the ideas started to flow.  After a few hours of playing/recording in the dark my migraine was still present but not as hangry as it had been. When I finished the bulk of the track I was originally going to call this "Close Your Eyes".  A lil personal reminder/mantra for my migraines.  The repetitive chord progression and reverb def helped me zone out and forget about everything else.  So I took a peek at the preset from Supermassive and saw it was called "We Are Stardust".  Welp, that led me to watch some more Carl Sagan clips on the tube4yew. Which then led me to my fav speech of his from 'a pale blue dot'.  The idea of me this tiny ant with what felt like the biggest migraine ever being shrunk down to a minuscule pixel def gets ya in the feels.  If you're interested here's the video. https://youtu.be/wupToqz1e2g?si=6JXov8Wy550MkR4Z
I wish there were more people like Carl Sagan. heart  Hope you are well.  Thank you for listening.

I think it's good to realize how insignificant we are sometimes.  Puts things into perspective, I think.  This is calming and soothing, while also capturing that outer space feeling really well.  I can't imagine it would be much fun to make music while in the thrall of a migraine, but I do imagine this is the sort of track that could help.

Really felt the cosmos (pardon the pun) in this track, like standing on the deck of *enter the name of your favorite star ship*.  Very calming with the wash of Supermassive, I really liked this track - going to listen to some space dark ambient now I think.  2 day migraine sounds dreadful, hope you have a better week coming.  And I agree, especially now, we could use more people like Sagan.

Absolutely love how this track develops. That beautiful e piano line, but gets a subtle pulse under it, which then expands. The grit and arps and such come in to share the space, but never overwhelm - great balance between those two feels. Very much agree, this is beautiful and soothing. Great track.

Gorgeous. I love the rhythmic variation of the synth patterns, the subtle percs, and the overall atmosphere. I was recently thinking back to being a little kid and watching dust particles float in a sunbeam and now it's constant screens and tabs and tasks. This track is a great meditative reminder to be present and deep observers. I too am a fan of Sagan, as well as Valhalla's Reverb algorithms. I use a hint of the Vintage verb on almost everything and in my last upload used Shimmer at the end. I'll need to play with Supermassive some more next time. Really lovely upload - Favorited.

Gosh that's deep - both the track description and the pad. This is absolutely beautiful. And sorry to hear about the trouble you're going through with migraines - hope you feel better soon. heart

This is beautiful. Calm, quiet, and the playful alignments of rhythms is very soothing. I get migraines as well (three fun flavours), and what I really love about this piece is I can understand it from that context - or rather, migraines inform how I hear and interpret this music. I can absolutely feel it on that level and that's just amazing.

Also good work taming super massive lol.

I love the arps in this.  Such a lovely use of repetition.  Really beautifully hypnotic, it can be so difficult to have repeated sequences like this and keep them moving forward, but you really made it sound effortless in this track.  I'm sorry to hear about your migraine... but I'm glad that music could help to sooth (or at least distract from) it.

i needed this
sounds like you did too

The piano sounds so smooooooth. The arpeggios are joyfulI and well placed in the mix. The beat is minimalistic and just right. love this track. Sorry for your suffering under the migraine.

The crunchy percussion that flows in and out feels sooo good, the arps as well - love the variations in speed. Arps also made me think of the Stranger Things theme if it was positive and relaxing lol Wishing you better luck with the migraines.

definitely feel like i'm in an Interstellar dimension listening to this
the arps are awesome.

sorry about the migraines, gentle hugs

This is so smooth and beautiful. Reminds me of the soundtrack to Fez which I adored. Valhalla Supermassive is the best stereo reverb plugin, fight me.

I feel you on the migraines, I surely hope yours get better. Love the pacing on this track very meditative.

Super nice ambiance there. thanks for the track!

Love the multiple rhythms playing off each other here with the steady, guiding calm of the e piano carrying the listener on a journey of deep relaxation. I can see how this composition came out of a migraine experience, and hopefully made the pain more tolerable. Carl Sagan is the best. His book "Contact", which was made into a movie with Jody Foster and Matthew McConaughey, is one of my all-time favorites.

woooow I LOVE this! I was hooked right from the start. So much depth and intrigue with soft rhythmic sounds in the background all set to that deep evolving pad. Killer work, especially with a migraine.

We love Carl. We are Carl. One of my faves of yours! Warm rich, full, enveloping in a hug, and that melody, chills, hope and joy as I rise past the earth into the beyond beyond. A mote of dust is all.
