oriental brass

By Q-Rosh on August 25, 2024 4:39 pm

This week I was fightig endlessly frustrated with this mix. I used the new Tannoy gold 5, but ended up in a complete fucked up aerea. the result was unusable. I came to the conclusion , that I need better monitor speakers as soon as possible. Dynaudio BM5 Mk3, what do you think??
The time for musicmaking was very limited this week. I wanted to make beats on the MPC too, but could not.
I absolutely needed some bouncy grooves for this song, and that is why I had to rape and warp some of the samples, I made with the SP404 from a hiphop record collection 3 weeks ago. Also I plundered a SD-card with sonic material from M2K7, that could run through my effectpedals. Another goal was to play a flute, the new saxophone and my old clarinet in this song. The clarinet was finally repaired after 25 years by a professional musician, whom I want to thank for his engagement to support me and showing me essential tipps and tricks..  now I like it, to make my own brass.

The hiphop samples set a distinct mood and then the warped horns take it off in a whole nother direction.  It's great you got the clarinet functioning.  It adds a cool and different texture to the proceedings.

Love the beat that kicks in around :45.  Gave me some Tribe Called Quest vibes with the drum/bass combo.  Oooh but then it gets launched into space for a voyager I broadcast smile Sweet that the clarinet got resurrected after so long.  Oooooh the 3:12 change had some west coast vibes to it too.  The snareeeeee sounds so good in the mix.  The clarinet sounds mystical there too.  Nice work!

Nice old-school summer vibe. Well done!

I love the beats in this one and how you go all hip hop on this one. The "stabby" bassy synth at 2:00 is wonderful. And the whole clarinet and wind arrangement makes this one stand out and gives it a quite personal twist.

As Tone Matrix said, the "West Coast" part is superb.

What MPC do you use? I dusted my old MPC 500 for a track a few weeks ago. Still learning the SP smile

Would love to discuss Akai/Roland stuff with you smile

Excellent work. Wish the third part was even longer

Thank you my pilot.
I have just upgraded the MPC1000 with an SD card adapterlast week, so there is no more slow and loud HDD. No need to use the CF card anymore. The SD card has 64 GB, but it also can handle 128 GB. That’s a large improvement. It has the grey pads, that have a bad velocity and must be hit hard The pad upgrade is too expensive for my case. The sound and the sequencer of the MPC is fantastic. The Roland SP404 MK2 is a fantastic device too, much more flexible and faster in the workflow. But it takes some time to learn all the functions and the shortcuts. Using both together must be the ultimate fun.

I had an Akai MPC 1000 for a while. I dismantled it for maintenance and personally I think "the phat pads" wouldn't be much improvement, because of the circuit's design (my 2 cents). I remember it being quite hard on the touch, really. Nice machine, indeed. I would likely have one if I had the space, though the flat screen was somewhat of a bummer when it comes to ergonomics. I run my 500 from a 4 gb memory card, which couldn't be more than 5% percent full. I personally load pretty small samples, tracker-style, on demand. I tried to have a big library inside but ended not finding anything sad

The 404 mk2 is certainly powerful, though I tend to forget how to use it if I leave it for a while. I'm trying to work "on my living room's carpet" when it comes to MPC/SP resampling sessions. It's somewhat "inefficent" but quite enjoyable experience, like going back to be 14 again and just fooling around with ideas smile

Looking forward to more of your beat-related stuff. Let me know if you want to trade samples and/or programs smile Nowdays, with our 100Gb libraries, the "schoolyard" feeling of swapping floppy drives is gone.

Very cool vibe! I like the layer of noise behind the drums in the mix--it's like the Bomb Squad used to do!

Really nice track, the clarinet brings back memories. I played clarinet all through high school (doubled on baritone sax for jazz band). Love all the different switchups (3:12 has a real nice vibe to it).

Absolutely in love with the clarinet here, all the woodwinds. Really brings a rich texture to the beats. Wish I could advise on studio monitors - I don't have any, don't even have a space in which they'd be useful lol. Sounds great despite the struggle!

such a cool journey, Q-Rosh. big fan of the clarinet with the beat. you've got a great feel with so many different styles. would love to hang out at an outdoor party with huge sound system and you providing the music

DUDE this is like 4 tracks in one - awesome job

I'm a big KRK monitor fan, thanks to Tone Matrix.

clarinet was sooo good, downloading!!

wow this is fantastic, so many different vibes in a single track, so many great moments, love the final bouncy beat that drops at 3'11"

I liked the bouncy groove right away, got me going, then this went into some great interesting territory. Clarinet so nice, many sounds ear candy, I like the journey we go on, driven by some good beats.

Thank you dear orangedrink for the nice comments.
KRKs sound very good, but in my last song I talked about my experiences with the rockit6,
which became unusable because of the black gunk of death!! This is the glue they have been using inside on the board, which becomes conductive after a while.
We just try to clean up that mess and hope they will work again, because I really like them too. I don‘t know, if the models from G2 upwards still are glued with that black stuff.
Better have a look!!!!!

great tune. im also a part time clarinet player.
this reminds a bit of john lurie which is great stuff

I do love the clarinet textures in there. I am team open back headphones here for my mixes, I am not pro in any regards but I feel decent headphones doesn't fatigue that much more than monitors and you kind of remove the room mode factor, no need to go crazy sound treatment on your room to make it sound good...

Beat is Funky!

Very fun track to listen to.

I feel like you deserve extra credit for making so many beats in one track, holy smokes! This sounds great to my ears, I enjoyed several listens and am sure to come back for more. I think the last beat/section was my favorite but they're all awesome. The transitions feel so smooth too, it almost feels like listening to a really cohesive mixtape.

what a fun trip, so many cool beats throughout this. Really love the clarinet, super unique and really adds to the feel. 3min mark is super cool. Then bam, you're in another land at 3:15, head boppin!

This song is quite an interesting journey!
