What'll I do

By Tom Foolery on March 22, 2026 4:56 am

This past week I have been away on holiday in New Zealand. It's been wonderful to spend quality time with family over there. I haven't had the chance to have a lot of one-on-one time with them in many years. I got to sit with my grandfather for a few days and just listen to stories about his life, about my mum's life, about my grandmother, about my uncles. I spent an afternoon driving out to the farm that my mother grew up on as a small child, and I got to walk through the house that she lived in (no one has lived there since). It was really wonderful to spend that time as an adult with my grandfather and to get to know him as an adult, as the person that he is. He is truly a smart, kind-hearted, intelligent, thoughtful man and I admire that he has those qualities. He has lived an exceptional 90 years.

I am back home for two days before heading off to visit my mum and dad, and my brother, his wife, and their daughter in Tasmania. I've quickly stopped by to catch up with my sister. Earlier in the year I threatened to teach her to write music herself (she is an excellent pianist, and quite a good singer), so today I followed through. We wrote this song together inspired by two memes we saw on instagram. One: "me aged twenty nine thinking about what job I'm going to do when I grow up" and another of a man meal prepping 30 days worth of food. The song came together quickly and we decided to record it as single track room-mic recording. We were short on time, so this is the second take, imperfections and all. Full credit to Eleanor for sneaking the phrase "full send" into a song, she is lyrically years ahead of me.

what'll I do
when I grow up
I'm still twenty-two
and I know too much
and then time flies
and you're twenty-nine
and you still don't know
what you're gonna do

I'll make my food I'll make my bed
but don't get me to plan a year ahead
I'm too busy living life full send

what about you
have you had enough
doing what you do
do you find it tough
as days go by
do you find the time
to sit back and watch
the world move by

I'll make my food I'll make my bed
but don't get me to plan a year ahead
I'm too busy living life full send

but what'll I do?????

Dang, this one hits me in the feels. You’re way too good at that, man. 🥹 Beautiful song, and beautiful reflection on life.

A bright collab - I love the story and the raw feel of it. I can hear the creation process as the song plays. Absolutely wonderful.

bravo to both of you, just lovely.
"I'm too busy living life full send" is a great line!

and how special that you got to share that time with your grandfather.
thanks for sharing all that with us, for real.

Beautiful song, love the harmonies between you both.  I loved reading the story to this too.  Such good feels.

Love love love the tenderness of your pieces, this one included - the full send definitely caught me off guard lol

This is lovely. Great presence on that guitar, and the voicing are so tasty. Your voices combine beautifully, and those lyrics....

Such a great *real* feel to this. I feel like I'm sitting in your living room while you perform this heart

My goodness this is great! Respect on so many levels

heart heart heart

ah yes, my mortal enemy
time
and the dread that comes with it
Spend it with the ones you love
