Twenty nine

By Tom Foolery on March 1, 2026 12:05 pm

This week I turned 29. A year ago, I was trying (and struggling) to write a song that put into words that feeling that I had outlived so many influential people that died at that fateful age of 27, realising how truly young they were, but also feeling a little bit stunned at how they had managed to carve out such a legacy in such a short time, and how it can feel a bit like I have barely made a dent in this world. That only feels like a month ago, yet here we are another year on.

I wrote this song early for once, and focused just on writing it out before trying to record it. It's funny how easily I can be proud of so many people, and find wonder in the things around me, yet how difficult that can be to sometimes turn back on myself. I remember feeling so proud of the first tomato plant that grew in my garden. What if I allowed myself to feel that way about the achievements in my life? This song is about that.

Otherwise this week:
- Saw Black Country, New Road, Hatchie (on my birthday!!! Divine, I cried), and Merzbow.
- Birthday celebrations with friends, colleagues, two cakes (too many).
- A run followed by swimming in the bay! Times two!
- Shooting a roll of 120 film in my RB67 for the first time in a year (oops).
- Went for a trip to site with work and got to experience the planes flying right over me. At this particular site the sound of the planes was incredible, but more interesting was the sound of the wake ripping through the air about 30 seconds after the plane was gone.
- Watching Reformat the Planet with friends and feeling inspired all over again.

Musically, I wanted to keep this simple - just me and the guitar (another DADGAD piece). Writing it separately to recording it was an interesting experience! It flowed very quickly, and kept it nicely broken up into neat sessions. However, when I came to record it, I had a half blocked ear and my voice was not playing ball. I would have loved to have another go at getting a good vocal take for the chorus, but I have run out of time.

there's an insect in your garden
you've been watching as it grows
your sister's even smarter
than anybody knows

your friends they move around you
you never run alone
your brother had a baby
now she stands on her own

somewhere in this busy life
don't forget to look
at the man in the mirror
at the man in the mirror
I know you don't slow down at all
but let yourself take note
of the things that you have done
of the man you have become

mum helped you plant the seedlings
and they grew by themselves
each small fruit that ripened
sits proudly on your shelf

dad thinks he's getting slower
but you still can't keep up
some nights you sit and wonder
if you could ever do as much

but somewhere in this busy life
don't forget to look
at the man in the mirror
at the man in the mirror
I know you don't slow down at all
but let yourself take note
of the things that you have done
of the man you have become

you've made it so far
be proud
now that you've found your voice
sing loud

though you didn't build the walls
you've made them now a home
and though you've had some helping
this life it is your own

Wonderful lyrics, and the self-affirmation I also needed to hear!!! I really appreciated the specific anecdotal lyrics - they kept me actively listening the whole way when I was on an otherwise passive listening binge. Great job!!!!

beautiful and emotional! and very cheezy! so cute to write such a self-affirming song, I'm into it!

also, nice to include some lyrics about dad, every song in DADGAD should have em!

sing loud, Warwick. hbd!

lovely, heartfelt tune. thank you for sharing it with us heart

This is beautiful. Love what you’re doing with DADGAD (I need to try that!) and your lyrics are slice of life poetry. What a beautiful message. I’m getting closer to my second 29th birthday…it resonates. Thank you for writing it. heart

Beautiful song. You should be proud! Thanks you for sharing with us! heart

The guitar sounds great and your heartfelt vocals hit so nicely.  Especially enjoyed the lower harmonies.  Excellent work and Happy Birthday!

Yeah, crazy how young some of the "legendary" stars did die...

Beautiful, sensible vocal performance. Back vocals harmonies are great.

Well done!

Happy Birthday!  I remember 27 feeling like a significant age for the reasons you mention.  It really is very young though, even if it doesn't feel like it at the time.  Some people burn incredibly bright and then burn out fast.  I can't help but think people like that are missing out on something important about life, even if they made a far bigger impact on the world than I ever will.  Anyway, thanks for sharing this lovely song.  The acoustic guitar sounds great and I like the lyrics a lot.

Being about the same age as you, i really share the sentiment though not always necessarily looking at it positively, so i think this is something i needed to hear. Really well song and a cool composition. Thank you for making this song!

That guitar slaps! Its actually crazy, amd paired wot those lyrics!? Hands down one of my top 3 favorite songs this year

Hittin' the fav button on this one heart great track

Hey Warwick, your guitar sounds amazing - reminds me of Coldplay! I love your singing in the high bridge section, so good! It creates a really good contrast.

Beautiful. heart Perfect soundtrack for reflecting on the themes you're describing. Awesome work Tom Foolery!

happy birthday heart this is a beautiful song; we all have to carve our own path through this funny little life, you've still got a lot of road to walk heart

happy birthday!

sing loud! heart

I'm happy you got something positive out of this too! The only feedback I had on this before uploading was surprise at how specific the lyrics were, and I was a bit worried, but it's lovely to hear you found them engaging. Thank you for listening!

Thank you for the birthday wishes! I agree, it definitely felt significant but there's still so much growing and learning about life that comes after that. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the lyrics! Thank you for listening!

Thank you freezedream! I know Coldplay use some alternate tunings, I wonder if they have used similar voicings to this one, I'm intrigued. Either way, not a bad thing at all!! And thank you for the feedback on the bridge section, I felt it a bit risky but I'm glad you think it worked well!

Thank you! I was beginning to get that suspicion... Best we try and make peace with them I guess.
