Turn away

Typed out a whole description and must have timed out so when I hit submit it made me log in again and my description was gone. Sadly another frustrating moment in the creation of this weeklybeat. Despite a lovely week this track has pushed me to the edge and emotionally unraveled me.

This was meant to be a simple piece but the fingerpicking pattern was like a tonguetwister for me and I kept ruining take after take after take. It's funny how once you have expectations you can easily be disappointed. Once you have desire, you're frustrated. You can hear where I finally give up in this take and switch styles for a very cathartic ending. I was simply just done at the end of this.

My week has been well spent otherwise though. I've spent time with old friends. I've been enjoying riding along the Yarra to my new office, and I'm enjoying getting properly stuck into the work at the new job! I enjoyed a peaceful dinner by myself in the city on the commute home. I went to the gym with a friend while it poured rain from the sky outside. I felt a glimpse of the running strength I had last year. My body feels strong again, moving through the world feels easy these days. I think there's probably a lot more on my mind but it's easy to keep moving, it's only when you stop to record the same guitar pattern for an hour and a bit that you start to notice where your mind wanders to. Anyway, I really had a lovely week, and I'm hoping that in a few days time I will be separated enough from the frustration to enjoy the good in this piece.

as the blood drips from my chin
I wonder when I'll break this wall in
my loose muscles force my lips
over my teeth to make a grin
how dare you turn your back on me
I wish you'd had to see my face

the tracks I stopped in disappear
the last to lose has now been crowned
I reach between my shoulders
and pull myself off of the ground
a silhouette can bring her voice to my ears
people should take gramophone recordings alongside their photographs

Love the detune, the delay, and the reverb! Beautiful song with fun effects and a neat switch-up at the end. Awesome stuff! 😎

So cool! Happy you took the time with the fingerpicking pattern, the contrast with the last part really is working really well. Sometimes the simple things don’t come out the easiest, but i think you did an excellent job!

such a lovely comforting sound between your vocals and the guitar.  The chord change midway got me right in the chest and love the cathartic ending! heart

A really nice track all around.  The acoustic guitar just has a wonderful sound to it with a nice usage of effects.  The fingerpicking pattern sounds great and the changeup to the strumming at the end is effective.  Good vocals and lyrics, too.  I also like the little noise artifacts that pop up here and there.  That moment around 0:50 seconds where it sounds like maybe you were sliding your fingers on the strings and it got kind of amplified and delayed... that is chef's kiss.  Also liked how you kept it running at the end and we can hear you put the guitar down and the guest appearance from the kitty.

my loose muscles force my lips
over my teeth to make a grin

that stereo acoustic is sending me (full send)
heart

heard the whole band in my head on that ending
LOVE

beautiful! nice spoken lines at the end of the verses.

actually "Once you have desire, you're frustrated" this is so true. sometimes after the effort there is also a payoff. but sometimes it's better to pivot... it's hard to know which path to take... hmm hmm...

Thank you levelcapybara!! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I feel I am overexploiting that echo effect on the guitar but it just sounds so gooooood.

Thank you Suhpos! I am glad that I persisted too. When I listen back I am very happy with how it sounds, even if deceptively simple. Very much worth the effort.

I totally agree! Those artifacts that ping through the echo are delightful. Also, yeah, keeping that ending in was very important to me. I just walked away, completely done with it, and that's how I wanted it to feel on the recording. Thanks for listening and enjoying!!

It's always interesting the lyrics other people pick up on. I really felt like I was phoning it in with that line, so it's nice to see you draw attention to it!
I wish I had a whole band with me to join in, but I heard it in my head instead too.
Thanks again for listening and leaving a comment heart

Thank you! It was something different to try out, but I didn't know how to sing the words I wanted to say, so I... didn't!
Perseverance is a skill. Knowing when to quit is a skill. I hope in time I will get better at both.
Thanks for listening heart

A large amount of credit must go to Graham Greene for that one I'm afraid, but thank you heart

The fingerpicking is gorgeous! Amd I love the build up with the vocals, worth the hours spent to capture it

bbro!!!! Thank you thank you! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it heart
I keep coming back to listen to this one and I am quite proud of how it turned out in the end. The pain and frustration of recording fades with time, leaving the shine of the idea that lay there all along.
