Train behind glass

By Tom Foolery on February 8, 2026 5:50 am

Edit: listening back to this on the Monday after it has gone up and feeling less happy with it than previous weeks. Wish I could go back and drop it down, redo the vocals etc etc. BUT this is the joy of weeklybeats! Lessons learned to apply in future!

Another busy week so I am doing this on a Sunday afternoon yet again! Guitar in DADGAD tuning, with a capo on the 4th fret. Probably a bit high for my voice. Yet again I got carried away trying to do harmonies, which I ran out of patience/skill with so some are left wanting. Simple bass guitar for texture - couldn't figure out any bass lines that complemented it better.

Lyrics are loosely inspired by taking my first ride on the new metro tunnel trains in Melbourne (yes I'm aware that sounds silly, it is). Low-key life-changing to get across the city for me personally though. It's exciting to see something so big happen in your city. It reminds me of when they finally opened the skyrail stations back in the late 2010s.

Some highlights from this week: went to see Billie Marten and Maple Glider - incredible what they can do with just their voice and guitar, and also how well they can do both and then do them both at the same time!! Saw a wonderful sunset at St Kilda pier. Ate tomatoes from my garden. Had a very cute ringtail possum visit my courtyard and pose for some photos. My cat keeping me company while I made music. Made very decadent nachos. All in all a very good week.

Apologies that I haven't got around to listening to people's weeklybeats this week! I will get to them soon I promise!

where is the ground
I used to walk on
I swear it used to be
right by that window

these days go so fast
I can't help but watch them go past
A speeding train behind glass

oh it echoes in this chamber
an eery silence gathers round
oh time feels so heavy
when it's buried underground

these days go so fast
I can't help but watch them go past
A speeding train behind glass

I walk these streets alongside
the boy I used to be and I
see ahead the man I
could have been as I
walk these streets with the
boy I used to be and
the man I am

Beautiful soulful singing. Really like the acoustic guitars as well.

Well played!

So beautiful, guitar is shimmering. The vocals are lovely and your lyrics are stunning.

lovely guitars and your vocals sound great.  such a calming atmosphere throughout.  well done!

Mmm that DADGAD sounds good. Always creates really interesting chords.

The backing vocals are super cool on this.

I don't know what you're talking about, this is lovely.

while i can certainly understand listening back and feeling less stoked after some space, let me just say as a fan and fellow WB person - this is freaking gorgeous.

also, so cool that you got to see Billie M. live! i got to remix one of their songs (Crown) in a mixing class this past Nov. and it was an absolute delight.  heart

Nice! Gots movie soundtrack mojo. Gotta checkout alt tunings one of these centuries.

I'm glad it's not just me who feels that way! But thank you for your kind words, it's so encouraging to hear people seeing the positive in something that you're very down on. heart

Also that sounds like a great experience!! The production layers on that album are fantastic (it's been on repeat since I finally bought the CD at the gig), it would have been amazing to pull it apart and see all the layers! If you ever get the chance to catch her live I highly recommend it.

Thank you! I definitely didn't expect to get that feedback ahaha! I am a HUGE advocate for alt tunings, it has made me fall in love with guitars all over again.

I think this is lovely. The guitar has a really great sound--a bit of shimmer on the top end that's really nice. Background vocals are evocative and really add to the mood. Cool track!

This is GORGEOUS. Multiple moments in this track caught me off guard in the best way and made my jaw drop. Fav'd!

feel this one deeply heart
