Sonny

By Tom Foolery on March 29, 2026 8:38 am

This week was another very busy week off traveling! I went back to Tasmania where I grew up to visit family. I exhausted myself mountain biking with my dad, I went to the local art gallery and was absolutely mesmerised by Sam Jinks' hyper-realistic sculptures (I cannot stress enough how lifelike they felt), I ate so many plums and pears and apples fresh off the tree, I caught up with my brother and his family. His daughter can say so many words now, she's growing up so fast. I love going back home, although it is changing, it still feels the same. The pace of life feels so much more relaxed too, and I find myself yearning for that from time to time.

I caught up with a close friend on my last day there. Last Friday, he and his partner had adopted a gorgeous rescue greyhound called Sonny. This past Friday, Sonny managed to disappear. My friends spent a very stressed 24 hours following every lead he could to find him. He woke up on Saturday morning to the sound of Sonny scratching at the door. I got a chance to meet him on the Saturday after he had returned home, and he is gorgeous and so sweet. He looks at you with such hopeful eyes as soon as you stop patting him. He's home safe now and he is loved there.

Had to very quickly record this on Sunday night while my partner was sitting on my couch which was very odd to do. I've never recorded vocals in front of someone. Frustratingly, any hesitation and they sound terrible - you really just have to commit. Took a couple of takes until I was happy enough with the harmonies on this. Very hard to mix as I have a blocked ear at the moment. BUT first attempt at playing some slide guitar!! I quite like how it has turned out. The roughness around the edges of it really add a character I like.

roll off the bed
lie on the floor
relief hits me
as you scratch at my door

I don't know
where you've been
but you're home now
but you're home now
my hand
under your chin
you are home now
you are home now

even today i was being shy about recording vocals with jwh we have done this for decades now & it's still hard smile

Tasmania!  What I know about Tasmania is from Hannah Gadsby stories heart
glad Sonny found his way home
hope you ear heals up

Glad Sonny made it home safely!  I have never been to Tasmania, but it sounds lovely.  I agree, it's odd to record vocals in front of somebody, especially if that's all they're hearing and they don't hear the music.  But it sounds like you did a good job.  As you noted there's a bit of rawness or a lo-fi feel that actually adds a nice quality to it.

Gorgeous vocal harmonies / reverb / guitar! Beautiful work. big_smile

sounds like such a beautiful week heart it comes through in the track! think the vocal harmony sounds nice, and the slide rules. like you said too, it's so weird to sing in front of people when all they hear is your singing and not the music 🎶

Oh dang--very pretty piece, with the soaring fuzz guitar against the clear acoustic. Your vocal may have felt a little uncomfortable, but there's a real charm to that little undercurrent of tentativeness. The melody is the perfect one for this piece--it's perfect for this chord progression, and your voice carries it in exactly the right way. Beautifully done!

Lovely song, and a great study in contrasts - the acoustic guitar sparkles, and pairs wonderfully with your voice. That wailing slide mixed into the background is a lovely contrast, while remaining subtle.

I’ve gotten a lot better with singing in front of people, but sitting on the couch and recording sounds wild smile Well done!

i'm glad that Sonny came home...
withOUT a vengeance  big_smile
*sorry*

this song did hypnotize me a bit, lovely bit of spell-casting
the trip sounds beautiful, and so does the music
thank you

Beautiful vocal harmonies and such a comforting guitar sound.  Love the backstory too. Yay for the return of Sonny!

I'm glad it's not just me that finds it hard!!! That is comforting to know!
I know of Hannah Gadsby but I don't know what they say about Tasmania - hopefully all good things, because it is such a wonderful part of the world.
Thank you, my ear finally healed up on Friday and it was akin seeing in colour again. I will not take my stereo hearing for granted again.

Thank you! I kept switching between headphones for tracking and speakers for mixing so at least she could hear some context!
I'm glad you enjoyed the lo-fi feel to it!!

Glad you enjoyed the slide!! I think I actually got the idea of using a bic lighter as a slide from a comment you left on one of your tracks? So full credit for that to you! Thanks for listening! heart

Thank you Paisleyfrog! I didn't think about the contrasts at play in this piece, but you're absolutely right. An interesting way to look at it!
It was a strange experience, very much into the deep end, but I guess I at least have sung along to the car radio in front of her before. Thanks for listening!!

Ahahaha WELL, third on the list of my friend's top 3 fears of finding Sonny was finding him covered in blood that isn't his, so I guess you could say she's also very pleased he didn't come home with a vengeance either!!!

Thank you for your kind feedback heart

Thank you Tone Matrix!! It's nice to hear the guitar described as comforting! Yay for his return indeed!

touching!!! doggy heart

funny about recording w someone present. can be easy, can be hard. no idea when and why. i guess it's the fear of "sounding bad" but more deeply it's the fear of being vulnerable and being judged...

but this sounds great!!!

heart heart heart

Somehow missed this comment!! I have always found it incredibly vulnerable, and I think often I am the one who judges the harshest.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it heart
