Welcome to week 1 of "It's time you learned how sampling works" CLUB

This tracks holds a number of firsts:
- First track finished on the M8
- First time recording samples
- First time using said samples
- First time making non acoustic music and not feeling completely out of my depth.
- First time mixing on the M8

Recording/using samples has been on my very long list of things to learn. It's also been on my slightly shorter list of things about electronic music making I find intimidating.  This track was very much a "follow the dopamine" kind of deal, leading to a strange beat, no "real" structure and a very unorganised file. Re the mix - I was very much out of energy by the time I finished this track. I gave on device mixing a half-assed attempt, assisted by a sneaky run through a compressor and EQ in Reaper. It's better than the unmixed track, but not a good mix by any means.

NGL - it was hard learning how to use the sampler on the M8 (the manual assumes a lot of knowledge) and the questions I had were scattered over a number of tutorials. I got there in the end though!

Samples used:
1) Cheap Quena (Played by me, recorded + sliced directly on the M8)
2) Violin Pluck + Bowed (Played by me, recorded + sliced directly on the M8)
3) Rummaging through the toy instrument box (recorded at music therapy + sliced directly on the M8)
4) Stock bass drum sample
5) Stock cymbal sample

well let me be the first to say:

- congrats!
- congrats!
- congrats!
- congrats!
- and congrats!

That's cool that you have a violin!  had no idea what a quena was and had to look it up.  very neat!

keep up the good work, i'm also learning new equipment and trying to push past the "i could just do this faster on the other thing I already know" but it's so rewarding to find the new musical opportunities smile

Yes, follow that dopamine! Sampling is great, and you some nice textures. Hoping to hear more of your electronic music journey!

My favorite kind.

There are so many things to like—here are some highlights: EarwormBassGroove™ starting at 0:24, the synth/arp/sfx motif starting at 00:36, the little hop in the bass at 1:12, the intro/outro, the fact nothing ever settles or gets boring.  I love that you record yourself and slice that!

ohhh i love whatever the processing is on the bassline - feels like a physical modelling/FM synth hybrid, so cool! great use of the full stereo image. the balance and tonality feels really good, so maybe what feels like a mixing issue is more of a sound design or production thing? start experimenting with more layered instruments & big unisons and stuff. excited to see where you start taking the M8!

Yaaaaaaayyy!!! I'm always here for more M8 tracks, hahahaha... And congrats on the sampling adventures, it seems like they bore some quite awesome fruit! I love the mix here! The more bowed and chip sounding synths stuff mixed in with the string and wind samples just work VERY nicely together. The lazy-long decay of the synth that comes in at 0:17 sets suuuuch a chill vibe. Wonderfully done smile

Your dopamine lead you to some interesting and good sounding places. Loving the ocean sound.

I sampled bits of this in my week 06 track―thank you for releasing music under a permissive license!
