First, thanks to everyone who listened and commented last week. I know we're a supportive community, but I was surprised at how much it gassed me up. Had some pretty genuine "oh shit, I _can_ do this" moments. And considering the absurd caliber of tunes on display here, feels great. Let's hope I didn't screw it all up now, haha.

So, this week I wanted to explore my made up nonsense genre some more--music for kids on drugs in a filthy warehouse in the 90s, haha. I've realized over the years that the reason I blend genres and hop around a lot in production is because nostalgia has compressed all of these elements from techno, progressive house, trance, electronica and beat big into this big ball of happiness in my head. I'm chasing that era more than a specific song or artist, so everything bleeds together.

One of the things I'm hoping to do over this year is figure out where the seams are. For example, the 303 or 303 style sounds appear across all over those genres, so it was this immediate point to grab on to. x0x drums are definitely another one. but how these things are used, how they're presented in the stereo field, et cetera can range pretty wildly.

This week I pushed hard into psychedelic territory. Right now, this is where I _think_ everything comes together. I flashed one of the Versios to Acidus Versio to get a second 303 style voice in the case, and while I'm obviously in the honeymoon phase for new sounds with it right now, I'm pretty in love. Being able to have one square wave 303 bleepin while another saw wave 303 is bloopin warms my heart.

I also hung a Pico DSP off the side of the case like a lunatic to get another delay. Only mostly a war crime.

My precious BIA had to calm down and act as bass. It's still got some character to it, and I really enjoyed the uh... definitely intentional and preplanned... decision to open up its cutoff _with_ the Apollo 11 take off sound. It'll be hard to differentiate without seeing the module played, but there's this really wonderful percussive element that it adds to the bass hits when the cutoff is almost all the way open. This module just demands to play more than one role.

Less dramatic changes here, significantly reduced melody in favor of rhythm and modulation, way more hypnotic. I'm curious to know what you all think.

cracked.

This goes incredibly hard. I don't have anything constructive to say because it's 3.30am but I enjoyed!

šŸ”„ drop at ~3m got me vibing

I’d call this a rousing success

proper techno smile nice one!

Oh man, that was doooope!!! I'd to listen to a continuous mix of this for A WHILE!!! Awesome mix of sounds here, had me bobbing in my chair.

Isn't all art, just the collection of our experiences, filtered through the lens of the taste we have cultivated?  And yeah, I would say that you totally hit the hypnotic vibe out of the park with this one.  It super easy to have driving techno get very "loopy", but I think you found that sweet spot with modulation to keep the sounds interesting enough, and the repeated motif is a whole cogent musical phrase, so the resolution mixes well with that modulation to both loop well and still feel like there is forward progress... and then a solid pulsing rhythm to get lost in and keep the ass cheeks bouncing... proper techno indeed.

I believe "kids on drugs in a filthy warehouse in the 90s" is called house

Hypnotic. Great bass, great beeps at 2:40. My brain is going to be going "BOOMWAH, BOOMWAH, BOOMWAH..." all day now.

That's some solid 4am grit your teeth and stomp on the dancefloor music

gotta love the BIA. So versatile

It's natural for improvised stuff to evolve slower compared to manually-sequenced compositions or productions from otherwise pre-recorded material. And this in fact works very well with the genre of your choice, so the end result is compelling. At the same time, I appreciate this week's edit is under 5 minutes as with 400+ tracks every week (so far at least), there's little hope for us to listen to everything.

Looking forward to future improvisations!

Nitpick 1: the muffled voice contrasts with the otherwise sharp timbres of the synths (which were fantastic BTW). I imagine a clearer vocal would gel really well with the music.

Nitpick 2: I said I appreciated the edit time, but the way it abruptly ends is kicking me out of the immersion you built big_smile

Yooo finally listening to this, definitely giving me bunker basement techno vibes šŸ˜„ Nice work!

pace is awesome from the start but when the panned out synths come in hell yais \m/
