Lost in the Catacombs

By Saguaro Gigante on February 11, 2024 11:54 pm

I had a lot of fun making this song! Started last night and wasn't sure what kind of song I wanted to make, but I pulled out an old guitar I hadn't used in a while and it sound great with metal tones, so I went in that direction. Towards the end I thought it would be fun to do some vocals, so I wrote some lyrics this morning and spent the rest of the day tracking the vocals and mixing. I'm still really new to recording and mixing vocals so that was pretty interesting. I think this tune came out somewhere between death metal and death and roll.

I'm not much of a writer. This is just some fun I had writing about being trapped in catacombs. I'm still unsure if there are actually monsters in the dark or whether the narrator is imagining fearful things while wandering in the dark.

Dude, from second 1 I was like "Ok yeah, SICK." AND DUDDDEEEE, THE VOCALLLSSSSS. I've been feeling uninspired the past couple of weeks but this is soooo getting me hyped up right now. This is taking me back to those days when we would sit around and listen to Opeth, Dan Swano, In Flames, and all that good shit. Truly, a spiritual experience for me. Fantastic production, you should definitely be proud my dude.

Mikael Åkerfeldt wants his demo tape back.
Holy shit man, this was awesome!

These lyrics feel off when grunted, like it's the world's most cowardly orc. Sweet work on the instruments though.

Nice! Great work all around, my wife said "FUCKIN SIIIIIICK" so you know its a banger!

Yo what the fuck. This is amazing. Very very good

Oh my god. Everything ViridianLoom said, except I didn't sit with you listening to Opeth and stuff.

Favorited! This is so good. Nice job putting yourself out there with the vox. Cool lyrical idea, I think the ambiguity works in your favor.

The tones and riffing are so tasty. Are you still using the Logic amp sims? If so, they should put you in a commercial or something.

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I'm really glad you liked it. I had a lot of fun with this one and I definitely was getting nostalgic making this kind of music. Those garage days are treasured memories for me.

Thank you so much! Yeah I was a little nervous to do the vocals but I figured having fun and playing around with that was worth it. Having done it on WB once before made it a little easier. Hopefully I can start experimenting with singing as well. Still trying to find my voice in that way though. I don't write very much but I had a good time trying to put words together with the song and found it a nice challenge and I would like to try more of it.

And yeah thanks! I'm still using the stock Logic amp sims. I've found that working with the pedal board plug in and the amp sims together and changing the microphone setting and placement simulation helps get some different sounds. This track has four separate rhythm tracks. Two are a more standard metal sound with an overdrive pedal running into a high gain Marshall sim, and the other two are the really buzzy grindy HM-2 type kind of sound. A while back I was messing with stacking several gain pedals an EQ into a really bassy amp sim and was able to recreate the sound pretty well. Back before the HM-2 was re-issued there was a guy on YouTube who was showing how to approximate the sound using a Pro Co Rat and a Boss EQ so I wanted to see if it could be done with Logic.

Damn, this is some heavy tones, very nice. The screams are quite scary! smile

I love that first riff, it was taking me back to Cathedral, but you have a better mix. Of course the singing takes us more into death metal territory. Fantastic guitar work all over this piece. This is really impressive and pro.
