The Long Year

By Plantrain on July 8, 2018 10:02 pm

DSI Mopho, Pianoteq, drums (mostly acoustic, but with some samples mixed into the background to get closer to the sound I wanted) and a little Paulstretch in the background.
I've been listening to Bohren and der club of gore lately, and must admit that had a certain influence on how this week's track turned out.

It's been a long year...

Very tastefully done.  I love the Black Earth album.  A classic.
You kept the timing pretty open yeah?  eg. no metronome.  Don't know if it's the Mopho (sounds like it) but that fat low end snarl that comes and go is very cool.

Very nice! I love the loose feel yet it's still tight.

That bass sound gives it an ominous almost sinister feel, while the piano is contemplative and relaxing.  It makes for a nice sense of tension.

Love the big bass sweeps! Soo much precious space in the mix. Everything really well placed. I think I may have said this last week or before, but you could makes some really great soundtrack work. This really tells a story.

This is beautiful!  Cool that you are playing drums here!  How did you achieve this open timing while playing multiple instruments yourself?  Was there some sort of metronome or timing cue?  I'd like to do this, but I don't know how to coordinate the timings.  That secret metallic grinding in the background is freaking FANTASTIC.  What was that originally that you PaulStretched?

I am unfamiliar with your influences, so to me, you are a genius!  smile

I too am interested in the open timing yikes I love the pace and how the piano almost cues the drums to play.  The mopho has such a menacing sound to it.  The paulstretch part almost has this jet-plane sound to it as it gets introduced.  I'm always impressed by the lovely space and atmosphere your tracks have.  Nice work! (oh and thanks for the recommendation of Bohren & Der Club of Gore, what's your fav track?)

Organic. Captures that super slo-mo vibe well.

Thank you all so much!

There were some happy accidents involved in the timing, there is a set bpm, but what happened was that the piano was an idea I got earlier in the week just before I was going to call it a night. So I quickly recorded the main idea with whatever variations I came up with at the spot. I am not a piano player, so my quick recordings aren't very precise, but I will usually re-record or quantize them. In this case I liked the feel, so I kept it like it was. The drums were added afterwards. With a click, but also with the "elastic" piano feel (so: yes, the piano does in fact cue the drums). This meant that although the downbeats are fairly precise, everything in between is subject to push and pull.

The PaulStretched sound was made by first compressing a work-in-progress mix I found on the computer I use for mobile recordings down to 8 seconds, and then stretching that file back to 4 minutes.

This is probably a good time to thank rdomain for recommending the Black Earth album at some point during WB 2014 (if i remember correctly). For some reason I had missed that album until then, and now I would consider it one of my favorite albums.

Awesome!  Glad I could recommend an album I thought you'd definitely enjoy!
