BECAUSE

This song came together in one evening. I had no plans to make this kind of song this week, but it just happened. Thanks weeklybeats!

It started with some uke strumming and me humming along. Then I started writing some lyrics and it all just seemed to work. I recorded some vocals and some harmony parts, quick and dirty. I added the synth bass and some simple percussion. Then recorded some trumpet parts and popped them in, again, quick and dirty.

Oh, and everything was recorded with the M8 internal mic because I was on a roll and didn't want to mess with setting up a different mic.

I had the whole song in 4 or 5 hours and I'm really pleased with the result!

Inspiration for the lyrics came from a tacky home decor sign that I saw hanging at a friend's house: "all this because two people fell in love." ... obviously meant positively, but here we look from the perspective of a painful breakup and the message takes on a whole new feel.

All feedback welcome! I'm trying to get better at this, so I appreciate any tips or advice you might have.

lovely, love love love those horns, great vocals

Uke is great, trumpet is an amazing extra texture! Very inspiring!

Lovely sound throughout (and great vocals!) - very indie smile

The trumpet abosolutly rocks! also an absolutly brilliant lyrically inspo.

The strummed uke is such an appealing sound and the trumpet is a great addition as well.  Everything about this works well together.

Dang, this is such a cool vibe! Those laid-back strums juxtaposed against that thick buzzy synth bass, it's such a cool combo. Fav'd! heart

I'm a sucker for some portamento bass. Great songwriting/arrangement/vocals, fuckin crushed it! Horns+++++ Reverb+++++ favorite

This is fantastic….and all recorded into the M8 with the internal mic? Fantastic. Love the buzzy synth with the uke, it’s a great combination. Vocals have echoes of the Beach Boys, fantastic harmonies. And the trumpet! Ending the song with a fade on the trumpet was peak. Awesome, favorited.

Love the sound of the uke with that sweet synth line.  Excellent upbeat vibes with the groove of the drums and love that harmony with the trumpets.  Awesome vocal work just using the M8 mic too yikes Well done!

i mean, it's just a great song! the lyrics and melodies are so strong, so you could really dress it up in any number of ways.

i personally think you nailed it. the instrumentation is cool/ fun/ interesting, and it all supports the narrative. the production has enough grit and character that it keeps it from going into a cloying or overly glossy zone. this is a sweet spot for my taste!

uke can be difficult to mix, and i usually find the less i do with it (outside of volume and panning, maybe some light compression) the better. if i was mixing i might try to cut a little bit from the uke in the low mids (like probably around 300 hz) and see how that felt. but i don't think it's problematic at all as it is. it's not masking the vocals at all (to my ears at least) or poking out in an unpleasant way, so if a low-mid cut didn't immediately feel better i'd be very happy as it is.

i think the danger with a song like this is to start overworking it.

oh - and the trumpet break (and outro) is the cherry on top. so nice!
really well done all around.  heart

*side note - i had gone back to look at something on one of my songs from 2024 and there was a comment from you saying you were hoping to try singing more in the future, and... here you are, killing it!   big_smile

Holy crap, I love this! The synth with the ukulele and the horns... it's so good! The vocal harmonies are great and your voice is such a vibe. It's especially impressive that you put this together so quickly. I love when flashes of inspirations work out so well like that. Very nicely done!

Life sure has a habit of happening.
Love the uke, great element to combine with.

Thanks! Yes, the M8 mic is tricky, but great for getting stuff down fast. The trumpet was the hardest to get because the mic is pretty sensitive! So stand back and then lowpass any clipping later. I'm pretty impressed that it sounds as good as it does tbh!

Thanks jwh! I appreciate the mixing tips too. I think that suggestion does improve the mix so I will keep that in mind for future uke parts ... and there will be future uke parts because I love this thing! wink
