Waiting

By Paisleyfrog on October 27, 2024 2:27 am

Everything I tried this week was feeling uninspired, to say the least. I've been very inspired by jwh and his experiments in minimal recording lately, so I decided to try that route - I grabbed my old faithful acoustic, and just sang - and this song popped out. I did a scratch, and then retracked the guitar and vocal. Added a minimal clean solo with the tele, sort of like Lou Reed had on Pale Blue Eyes. Done. Leave it alone now!

I think it turned out really nice. It’s a good chord progression and a great melody. There is an honesty to it that is impactful.

This is such a simple yet powerful sentiment.
Super pretty song, awesome work on building something so cool, especially during a week where things felt uninspiring!

That was really lovely...and a little sad.  Gotta say, you creating this despite feeling uninspired is (pardon the turn around) rather inspiring - like inspiration Inception.

Thank you smile It felt good to approach from melody-first, it's been a while.

Thanks - that line was when the whole song snapped into place smile I was prepared to beat my head against an uninspired track, but I prefer to like what I'm working on LOL

Thank you - yeah, it's a love song, but there's some desolation to it. I haven't just sat down with a guitar and written a song in a while - really focusing on melody. That was primarily how I was writing in 2020, and how I first started writing - it was good to get back to basics.

This really hit me home in two places.

First, as a cornfed bumpkin, the tune and tone of the whole thing is right from the well I was pulled out of. Second, it really hits this emotional duality that I really like--the sort of "sweet sad smile" kind of thing.

Really beautiful

Man, really nicely done. Your singing and playing are so beautiful. The solo was perfect too. As you say, leave it alone! Great work.

Beautiful melody and strumming! Awesome results from heading down the minimal recording route. Sometimes the simple solutions for songwriting are the best ones.

Thank you heart I hadn't thought about the roots country sort of feel in this, but you're right. "Sweet sad smile" is a great way of putting it. Sounds better than "love song with baggage", anyway big_smile Pale Blue Eyes is a little like that, too.

Thank you, and greatly appreciate the compliments...I have trouble thinking of my voice as "beautiful" heart  Leaving a song bare is tough sometimes - adding layers it a lot of fun, but sometimes it doesn't serve the song.

Thanks smile You're right about simple solutions. When stuck, sometimes it's best to strip it all away to the bare essence of what a song is about - words and melody.

welp, that's me teared up over here heart

lovely song, and it works so well in this stripped down mode!

and thank you for the shout-out, that is incredibly meaningful to hear.

It's so odd that you got a perfect balance between wistful and strong. The opening acoustic guitar & stripped-down vocal sounds vulnerable, but there's a (not-so?) subtle defiance there. As usual your playing/production/vocals are on point, and these lyrics are a prime example of less is more. They're direct and honest (and relatable).

I don’t know if there’s a better compliment to a songwriter than tearing up. Thank you so much.

Doing a song in a stripped down format is a little scary…there’s nothing to hide behind. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to try it. heart

Thank you, I’m so happy that came across.  it’s not a weak song, and I was thinking about my wife when I wrote it. That no matter what happens…that in spite of problems…everything will be ok because you’re here. We’ll make it that way.

I was getting some david bowie vibes with your vocals. Love the electric guitar part over the acoustic. Really lovely song.

Love this. There is something great about just picking up a guitar and recording. You captured that magic here, nice one!

I love the minimalist approach and just going. I really completely overthink things and this is inspiring. Great job!

oh how lovely!

Oh what a huge compliment. Thank you. I love how Bowie was able to just “let go” when he sang, and it was amazing.

Thanks! Yep, you and me both. Being forced to stop after a week holds a lot of my worst tendencies at bay, but this is really a whole different way to work. I’m liking it smile

Oh wow - I had to look it up, it’s a movie I had no idea existed. One Trick Pony, 1980. I’m still pretty confused, though LOL

woah...

Lovely and simple and wonderful. Your vocals are always on point and processed beautifully. Absolutely love that twangy guitar!
