The Nasty Set (I Ain't a Gothic Heroine/Boys of Blue Hill) - NSFW

Let's do some Irish trad! But like, obscene.

I was sort of stuck for what to use for cover art this week...and then Dr Frog gestured at the wall behind me. Oh yeah! Let's just take a pic of the instruments I used this week. Tenor banjo, bodhran, bones, pennywhistle, guitar (FrankenGuitar) and upright bass (Ol' #12!). My MIDI and synths and noise are getting lonely. Soon, my precious...

So, neon liminal is partially to blame(?) for this track, waaaaay back in week 8. From my post on Nasty (paraphrasing a bit):

neon liminal wrote:

I mean... its a great frigging track...BUT...

You can and have been much, much, much filthier and disgusting and more nasty.

I challenge ye hence to deliver me atrocious levels of filth...

To which the response was:

CHALLENGE FUCKING ACCEPTED. I can yea verily feel the gauntlet wherens't it hath been flung across my face forthwith.

Although we had thought we would swap Nasty challenges back in April. Sometimes Life hates making music.  smile

What makes this particularly funny is the somewhat bardic nature of my reply is in contrast to the expected sleazy rock we were going to do....but it rather fits with the tracks the Dr and I have been doing lately. This rather has a sense of humor, nasty with a wink and a nudge.

This song has been living in our lyrics book for about six years. The song is a co-write, but the melody and lyrics are primarily Doctor Frog's. Let's let her talk about it!

Doctor Frog wrote:

This song was inspired by a collaborative writing session sometime around 2020. Bridgerton had just come out, and it was sweeping the country with Regency era romance. You know, society drama, social pining, and marriage as the goal. As we were pinging topics back and forth, the idea of writing about an anti-heroine using (very) old euphemisms for sex came up. We were laughing hysterically about the phrases that surfaced in our searching (see “grope for trout in hidden streams”), and a song tumbled out.

Fast forward to this summer where I actually have time to write music with Paisleyfrog. We talked about collaborating on some trad music, a favorite of both of us. As we were thinking about last week’s offering, I remembered this week’s lyrics (yes, I do keep everything organized so I can find our past work). A quick hunt in the lyrics document, a bouncy melody, and a raunchy sing later, and this song came to life.

This piece uses a common trad strategy of offering two songs in one, usually with the second song as the instrumental interlude. “I Ain’t No Gothic Heroine” combines with “Boys of Blue Hill” to make “The Nasty Set.”  The congruence in the song title is a lovely irony!

We hope you enjoy this ribald and unapologetically sexual romp.

Sometimes a song needs to wait until the right moment to come out, and this year's Weekly Beats with all the Early Music we've been working on was exactly the right time smile

Slappin' those fuckin knees to this beat. God damn mr/mrs frog

God I love this. Not just for the lyrics, but the whole arrangement. I have a very soft spot for old style folk. Very nicely done!

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
...This is perfect. Bravo!

Amazing track! Also love the lyrics xD

THIS IS INCREDIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I really want to play this at a coffeeshop at a low volume

i can't believe you accepted the challenge LOL

madlads the lot of you

Enjoying the folk kick you've been on these past couple weeks! This caught me completely off guard. It is 1000% brilliant though! Loved the breaks after the 'wanna fuck with you' chorus parts. Such a contrast!

i wanna make sure i preface this with its intent being in the purest/most wonderful way...'you nasty'

Now I almost want to fuck with you!

Such a fun track. It is awesome and love the Recorder tracks.

You hit the style's nail on the head!

Let's see if I can get reported for this comment lol

FLOORED. SMASHED. PENETRATED. DONE ROUGH WET AND STICKY. USED AND DELIGHTFULLY ABUSED AND LEFT FOR SLOPPY okay I'll stop.

This was fantastic. I mean you should win an award for getting the word "fuck" in what's likely a record number of times. The lyrics and Dr. Frog are fantastic, the instrumentation perfect, and the tavern crowd turns this from a bawdy tale of love and romance into a full-blown public sex performance with an enthusiastic audience cheering these noble thespians along in their debauchery.

It was also very funny. I am humbled sir and madam. As well as all those other things.

My filth is in development and likely to disturb more than it entertains but ye shall have it, honoured sl*ts, a term I use with all the love in the world heart

Oh you no when you see the picture what you are letting yourself in for musically, but very much not the lyrics big_smile

The utter filth followed by the jaunty hornpipe on the whistle made me laugh out loud.

The gang vocals at the end and the applause just take it home.

Brought a bit smile to my face.

Wow this made me laugh so hard! The contrast of the raunchy lyrics with the super straight delivery and great performance of all the folk elements is pitch perfect. Love love love this!

I can’t listen to this without a big smirk on my face. Happened both times I listened. This was genuinely my highlight of Sunday night. It’s literally the happiest music I’ve ever heard. Even with the lyrics and the traditional sound of this, it’s not corny at all.

I didn’t catch the tavern hooting after the pussy drop. Did you record all these shoots and hollers HAHA

I wish this song was famous or could be part of some movie. I get big MMO vibes listening to this.
