Tell Me In the Morning

By Paisleyfrog on September 29, 2024 6:37 pm

A bit of a frustrating week for music - started a track on Tuesday and lost it to a crash, plus just a lot stuff going on (as my younger step-kid said, "Friday was a long week".)

Which leads to to Thursday! I've been thinking a lot about the song structure of The Cars and power pop, where the verse and chorus frequently has the same chord progression. (Something I didn’t do in Vicki Says). I was stuck for what to do, so I loaded up three Session players, gave them a I-V-vi-IV progression to chew on and looped it. Put an arp with delay over the top and started playing guitar - and this song popped out. What is it about arps that just creates ideas?

I was initially thinking about The Cure, but the track ended up with a pretty heavy Modern English flavor. Lyrics came up on the way to work on Friday, by singing along with the bed track until some sounds and words seemed to fit. (Related: did I end up singing the chorus with a somewhat faux English accent? Yes, yes I did.)

Much like Vicki Says, the lyrics here seem to fall under the umbrella of “anxious love song.”

That was great!  I don't know Modern English so well but I sure do know The Cure and the guitars and chorus had some pretty deep Cure flavours in them.  I looooved the synth opening and what you did with the guitar at the end.  Much fun, very well done.

Absolutely masterful. I mean you had me at the electric keys and guitar in the first 30 seconds but everything after was "genre perfect" which is a high nerdy compliment from me cuz I really respect the attention to detail. Definitely get The Cure here but also Joy Division - a little Love Will Tear Us Apart here. And props on that fade out! heart

This is WONDERFUL. Definitely right to my heart (as a fan of both 80s and power pop). The arps are lovely, you NAILED the guitar sound of the era, and can we just stop right here and full-on appreciate your vocal work? You're doing just the right little tweaks to make your voice fit all these styles you're flitting between. Positively stellar.

Side note: I (years ago) backed a Kickstarter for a "new 80s" compilation that was supposed to mimic the new wave comps of old but with all original music that sounded as though it just fell through the cracks until being rediscovered. That comp, while pretty darn good, was a little uneven (some tracks didn't quite fit). If "Tell Me In the Morning" was on that disc it would have been the standout track, hands down.

Bloody brilliant, mate! I particularly liked the guitar solo break down, and the way the background harmony sat so nicely in the background.

so damn good! had to play this for emily and it's been in my head all morning.
we love Modern English and were just driving around listening to the After the Snow album last week. obv 'Melt With You' is well-known/ loved by many, but that whole album is incredible. and as a Guided By Voices fan, i'm never mad about a faux English  smile

speaking of the Cure, i was so moved by hearing 'Alone' last week. i had heard some live clips, but WOW. incredible song  heart

ok, back to 'Tell Me In the Morning'....  great work, Friend! def taps into those vibes, but you've made it your own. cheers!

Thank you! Really happy to hear that the stuff I wasn't entirely sure about landed well smile

Oh wow, thank you - definitely appreciate your ear for detail, and I know a nerdy compliment from you is high praise heart big_smile  Also, all hail the repeating rock fade! I love them smile

You're gonna make me cry, man. Thank you heart

I'm always a little nervous when I try a genre song. Always a little worried it's gonna be like a kid wearing his dad's suit. So happy I'm doing justice to the sound - I love the music as much as you. smile

GBV! Hell to the yeah! Also explains to me some of what i hear in your music. smile

And thank you so much...I like being a Musical Chameleon, but I'm glad that it doesn't sound like I'm just copying smile

noooo I hate a crash/lost work. However.... you recovered quite well. This is a certified banger. You nailed the powerop feel down to the mix. So catchy, as JWH mentioned, this is going to be in my head all day.

beautiful heartfelt work! lush arrangement, great inspirational lyrics, and some fine bass work. this song presses my music buttons! you are excellent at conveying real emotion in your music.

Earworm status is great praise...thank you!

All things considered, I feel pretty lucky with as little I've lost this year - I think this is the only one. I may go back to the idea, I was able to recover some of it big_smile

Thank you so much! I was totally taking some inspiration from Love Can Do it All with the arps and pads, and the kind of deeply textured tracks *you* make smile

The bass is actually a Logic session player! It was one of the three starter tracks when I was making the song. I had thoughts of replacing it with my own playing, but I thought it sounded pretty good too big_smile big_smile

Wasn't expecting the synths up front! Love that.
This for sure has real The Cure vibes. Great job.

*Checks watch* ...Okay, it's morning, so now I can tell you: this track rocks! big_smile

Wow, I'm glad I listened to what I missed last week. This is truly uplifting and fun to replay over and over. I am always impressed with your ability to take diverse genres and create something new and fresh. Really loved the intro; it just pulls you right in and sets up a solid backdrop for that lead guitar to sing, especially on the outro. You know a song really hits home when you're on your 4th straight play, and it still sounds fresh. Love it.
