Return to the Quiet

By Paisleyfrog on December 26, 2024 4:58 pm

How does one cap off a year? 2024 was a lot. But it was also amazing and unexpected.

I was planning on doing a biweekly song project in '24 and had posted my first track on FB (yes, that's a Steamboat Willie sample), when MRDRCAT told me about this thing called Weekly Beats...and that I should check it out! Sure, I'll give it a try...

I was figuring on just having a good place to post music on a weekly basis. But wow...it was the amazing community here that made the year special....encouraging, thoughtful, and just fun. Because of this awesome group of musicians, I tried things this year that I NEVER would have tackled otherwise (over some 15+ genres of music, depending how you count). I've gained so much confidence as a musician this year, and it's because of Weekly Beats.

So how do you cap off a year? By returning to the quiet for a while. This is an improvisation with the Liven AmbientØ and Native American flute. A bit of a callback to week 14 when I was sort of struggling to get things done, but the community really gave me a boost. I also got to do what I wanted on week 26, and give the birds a bit more of a solo. smile

Thanks to everyone who makes this place great. Time to recharge in 2025, release a couple albums and experiment. Hope to see you again in 2026! Peace and love to you all.

Love this. Calms the senses after the stress of finishing this week's track.
Great work!!

What a way to finish off the year, I love it.  It's like the drone became the river that we traveled down, changed and a bit wiser.  The start at around 2.20 where the river, drone and flute all become one long drone - just beautiful.  You are a genre hopping madman, I can't wait to see what's next!

This is so lovely and a great way to finish a hectic (but fulfilling) year-long musicpalooza. The bird (and frog?) sounds are refreshing, and the drones are nice and thick, but the star is that soulful flute. Way to go out with a subtle bang!

What a year indeed! Congratulations!

This piece is beautiful, speaks to my younger soul that had simple flute probably made from PVC pipe with a little gold paint that I bought at some festival, sitting by the shore of the lake at sunset listening to a band that flew all the way from Argentina to play in a cold city in Canada (well, it was summer) ... but it was one of those formative moments that really started my love of music, and this piece of yours brought back that memory - really beautiful.

Also the rhythmic element of the frogs is top notch. Kinda love that. Rhythmfrogs.

I've loved all your music this year - especially the Celtic and folk, especially the industrial - but you're forever going to be the genre-dancing-master to me. Your skill at understanding and creating a pastiche or satire of genre is phenomenal and the envy of many musicians I know. Your Bees in the Bathroom piece is IMHO the stuff of legend. Brilliant. It's been a tremendous pleasure connecting with you and listening to your music this year, thank you heart heart heart and thank you to your lovely singing partner, I look forward to the music you make together!

This is really nice. The balance is really tasteful and emotional. I could totally listen to it on a mushroom trip. Haha.
Also, I want to thank you for all your feedback and encouragement this year. It helped to know that at least someone was listening to my songs. Congratulations on a great year of weekly beats!

Well put. And beautifully composed. The calm feels like it serves a dual purpose - to create a space for reflection, and to reset the mind for the year to come. A wonderful track either way you look at it.

Hope to see you again in 2026 too. In the meantime, hope 2025 is a restful year with happy musical discoveries along the way. big_smile

Dude, oh my goodness... What an INCREDIBLE way to finish things off, holy moly...
This is beautiful, contemplative and moving. Incredible to hear your restraint here and keeping things so bare and still having it work beautifully. This is legit fantastic.

Also, thanks for helping to make this corner of the internet such an awesome place. Your comments, kindness and enthusiasm definitely helped me make it over the finish line, be it through your super thoughtful comments or just the wild array of genres and styles you made yourself try. It's been super inspiring to listen, seriously. Wishing you an amazing 2025, and may we come back in 2026 even stronger!!!

Wow, this is amazing! Nice work, just gorgeous.

Thank you heart Looking forward to putting some projects together and experimenting more with sound design, things I didn't really have the time to learn more about this year. I've been really inspired by all of your spooky music this year, and am looking forward to digging around in that playground!

Here's to all the wisdom we gained this year, and more music to come smile Already looking forward to '26!

Thank you so much, your music this year has been an inspiration. Also: holy carp, I think I know the band you're talking about - either that particular South American band was the hardest working band in history, or they had great franchise opportunities...I remember them at the State Fair here in Wisconsin in the 80s/90s or so.

Bees in the Bathroom! speaks to one of my favorite parts of this year - suggestions and ideas in the comments - and that B52s idea was yours smile smile There's so much creativity and support and encouragement in this community, and you're a huge part of that. Thank you heart

Thank you! It can be a little easy for NA flute to venture into the duuuuuuude New Age territory. Glad it stayed reined in smile And it's been my pleasure as well! You're one of my favorite songwriters on WB.

Thank you so much! It was nice to sit back and just breathe with this one....and draw '24 to a close smile

And back at you! You've brought it week-on-week and always had that infectious energy. And hey - you're the reason why I tried doing punk big_smile big_smile So much fun throughout the year. Awesome corner of the internet indeed. heart

Thank you! Here's to closing out '24 with a deep breath and moving forward smile

First off, a great introspective writeup there.

Great use of the AmbientØ and that flute is sublime. You built a place, a moment in time. It's fantastic and a fitting end to the year. I was attempting something similar, but in the end overdid it with layering. You built a perfect cohesive piece, it sounds great.

You kept the streak alive as soon as you discovered the project. Congratulations on that! We did it! Hope 2025 treats you well.

It's always nice to return to somewhere peaceful after some intense work and this is most certainly that. A calm and relaxing 5:40 minutes every now and then goes a long way. I'm very glad you made it here.

ahhh, this was the exhale i was needing. so nice to put the headphones on and float away, thank you!

and thank you so much for sharing all of your musical explorations, beautiful collaborations with your partner, and heartfelt words. you helped add to the communal feeling over here, and helped make my first year such a good experience.

looking forward to the album! let's keep going heart

Thank you so much. The AmbientØ is a really nifty piece of gear that I'm looking forward to digging into in the coming year (much like your music! For whatever reason I've missed listening to a lot of your tracks, but you're on my shortlist of artists other to catch up on smile ).

Totally get the drive to add that One More Thing....Not Overdoing is something I've worked on over the past year - in no small part because of my wife. I have a tendency to gild the lily, so it's good to hear that leaving it spare was the good choice heart

Here's to more great music in '25...and to WB '26!

Thank you - yeah, it's a deep breath after what we've all accomplished. What an amazing year. Here's to more creations in the future heart
