Marmalade

By Paisleyfrog on May 4, 2024 3:00 pm

Why "Marmalade"? Because it's sort of a jam.

This was a a difficult week (just in terms of life in general)...so I'm glad this this track didn't fight me too hard. I'm honestly surprised I was able to get something done.

My brain has been sort of a colander, so I decided to go along with what I was doing last week and lean into the reggae/dub feel. It was apparently the right direction, because the whole track came together in a matter of hours.

After last week, I went back and listened to some of my old favorite albums and took note of a few more characteristic sounds....like the phaser piano. Threw a melodica solo on it and called it done.

Guitar
Bass
Melodica
XV-5080
And software instruments

solid track. Love when the horns come in. Software horns? They sound great! KILLER melodica parts, so catchy.
The kinda jam I can toast to
Favoriting

Wow, thanks!!

Horns are a stock patch in Logic called Dub Horns - I think it's a basic sampled instrument, but not sure, the dialog has next to no controls (just attack, release and cutoff). Sounds thin by itself but really comes to life with delay and reverb.

Glad I didn't burn the toast with the melodica, it was a one-take jam (and is where the name came from ) big_smile

Ooof yes those horns sound so nice in the delay and verbs.  Melodica brought me back to early Gorillaz.  This is def a sweet syrupy jam.  Those percussive delays are my fav.  Rolls so nicely.

I'm not super conversant in dub but those horns, man they really evoke a sound used in a lot of Italian crime and giallo films of the 70's, such a great sound mixed in there.  Really fun track...hope this weeks been a better one

Thanks! I finally got a melodica because of how much I love the first Gorillaz album. Whenever I hear one, I always think "Dracu-la, Dracu-la".

Thanks! And I haven't heard of that before..now I have a new film genre to check out! And yes, things are getting better...the support of friends and family helps a lot. smile heart

Man, started out chill and got epic by the end! Hard agree on the horns - they really take it over the top & add some urgency. That melodica is PERFECT.
