It's Not Tonight

Let’s do something fun, shall we? Time for some New Wave!

I’m always inspired by new sounds, and this song was no exception. I installed the new JP8000 emulation by The Usual Suspects, and the idea for this song pretty much jumped out in a rush from the default patch. In my mind it evoked some of those new wave tracks like Kids In America by Kim Wilde or Peter Schilling’s cover of Major Tom. (Although amusingly enough, I realized later that the default patch - “Chariots” - is probably supposed to evoke Vangelis and Chariots of Fire. LOL). Time to get started….now where the hell are my LinnDrum samples?

Once I got the music set, I had to figure out lyrics. The rough title and chorus came in a quick improvisation, but wasn’t sure what to do with it otherwise. That's when you sleep on it. First half of verse one came to me ten minutes before the alarm went off next morning. Grabbed for my phone and got it down before I forgot it. Wrote the rest at work in about five minutes. Still wasn’t sure how to approach it though. Then I remembered some of the lessons from WB24 - my voice fits well with “speak singing”. Spoken word verses - done.

Even then, wasn’t sure if my voice was the right fit or if my wife should sing it. I got it all finished that night and had her listen to the first mix. She gets done listening and says, “I’m saying this with my full chest: if you touch that track again, I’m going to sit on your fingers.”

I trust her judgement…I guess it’s done smile

One month down…let’s goooooo!

Instant 80's vibes out of the gate. Vocals and instruments are so on point for the era.
Spectacular job.

BRING IN THE 80'S!!! This felt like a blast to the past on a neon spaceship smile

Love this!

Wow. This track is great.  Definitely feel the Bowie vibes.  Excellent job.

love singing along listening to this was really fun!

Oh my god the little plucks at the start and fuck me the frog is doing synthwave. I am destroyed. RIP neon. Actually its more new wave, right? Part skinny puppy part depeche mode.

Bowing to the genre chameleon supreme warlock. This is so freaking awesome!

oh man this kicks off greeeaaat

Nailed that New Wave vibe

The Phaser in the second part is perfect

REally enjoyed the lyrics and the solo, lovely fade out!

Vocal production is solid.

I'll go grab this jp8000 plugin, at this price it can't be bad...

See u on stage at the next 80s festival then!!
Fantastic work M8.

But did she sit on your fingers?? 🤔😉😂

absolutely nailed it DAMN. vocals are perfect for this, it's incredible !! heart heart heart

If someone told me this was a long lost 80s pop song I would have believed them. Everything is so cohesive, and really emotionally powerful. Fantastic work!

The speak singing really works. Please keep doing that, reminds me of Lou Reed in a great way. Also thank you for the intro to these synth emulations! This is awesome

Thanks! Sonically I was aiming for 1982 or so...glad I hit!

Glad you enjoyed! Early 80s is sort of baked into me musically, I have very little doubt that there will be more this year smile

Oh that is high praise - thank you. A lot of my favorite vocalists aren't traditionally good singers (like Bowie) - I've really enjoyed leaning into that style.

Thanks! I was having fun recording the vocal layers at the end, too smile

Uh oh, someone mentioned genre - here comes the frog. (Is he wearing tiny spectacles?)

"Both of those genres would be correct! New Wave was a very broad term describing the "new wave" of pop music that came out after punk, such as post-punk (itself a catch-all phrase) and synthpop. It included artists as diverse as the B52s, Duran Duran, Human League and DEVO. This track definitely attempts to evoke the era of the early 80s and could be called New Wave, but its synth and guitar foundation makes it absolutely synthpop/synthwave. Personally, I consider synthwave a retrospective term, in that people were trying to figure out what to call it in the 80s!"

Aaaaand he's gone. Sorry, he geeks out about music genre.

So glad you enjoyed it! The plucks are from the Wasp, love the arps I get from it. Early 80s is my favorite era of pop music, it was definitely the Wild West of music with so much going on.

Also, I want "Genre Chameleon Supreme Warlock" as a title on my business cards big_smile

You noticed the phaser! Makes me happy. Wasn't sure how to link the sections, and it felt like the most expedient way to do it smile Thank you so much.

She was wondering if someone was going to comment about that LOL...I took her seriously and didn't touch the track after that first mix, so she didn't need to follow through.

Might be fun later though. big_smile

Thanks, glad you enjoyed!  smile

Thank you! Glad it worked...I'm still learning the best ways to use my voice. It's not a good fit for everything, but it's mine smile

That is such a huge compliment, thank you. I love early 80s music and I want to do it justice heart

Oh thank you - Lou Reed was one of my influences that led me to try it....how he would sort of melodically speak his way through songs, especially later in his career. And enjoy the plugins! smile

Well, the title can't be referring to 80's night, because it most certainly is the 80's here in this corner of Weekly Beats.  Great energy and nice encapsulation of a very particular sound.

love the vocals in this! so catchy with the bassline. Those lil arps over top are so nice.  Had me shaking my head from left to right with defiance! super catchy song!

Great guitar, great arps, great pads, great drumbeat, great bass, great vocals, great melodies, great everything! This is such a cool vibe. Awesome work Paisleyfrog! big_smile

There's some dark in your wave here buddy...I love this a lot.  The opening is perfect and those plucks really set the era.  Yup, love it

Rock is forever.

nailed it! really strong song too. keep going, Paisleyfrog heart

Oh man this is amazing! Great opening with the nice thick bass. The vocals are great - not overprocessed and sitting nicely where they need to be in the mix. The guitar is icing on the cake. This should have been a hit back then. We need a time machine.

incredible work on this one. the whole track is great but the opening is playing straight to my heart - could listen to just that looped forever. sucker for the 80s

The 80s called and they want their mullets back

Love it!

Great tune. All aspects are at full throttle.
Guitar = shredding
Voice and lyrics = spanking
Synth and drums = slapping

Love it!

WOW!!!!! Abosolutly amazing!

Graphic is absolutely on point for how this sounds. weekly beatswave

Thanks so much everyone! Finally catching up on replies.

Thank you! The very beginning of the 80s is some of my favorite music. I'm happy I got there smile

Thanks! I'm really enjoying making title cards for each track (I should have put the title in Mistral and given it a chrome gradient though smile )

I love your guitar tone as well as the way you processed the vocals, it's got that Billy Idol edge to it, but definitely newer in production style. Such a great track!
