That, I Don't Know

By orangedrink on February 4, 2018 11:55 pm

This took about 30 minutes to write, and then 14 hours to record.  I tuned my drums and spent a lot of time on microphone placement.  The drums were recorded with two microphones only.  Running out of time, so I will update with notes later.  This was an emotional rollercoaster.  I loved the song, hated it, loved it again, hated it even worse and really doubted myself, but now I love it and think it's the best thing I've ever done (but I always say that after finishing a song) ;-)

BONUS NOTES:

The song, like many of my songs, is about the struggle towards self-acceptance.  I don't know if I can really write a "happy song" but I feel my version is "rays of sunlight behind a cloud".

After listening to this for a few days, I think I will say it's the best thing I've ever done, and I am looking forward to besting it later this year.  There are a few vocal lines that I want to redo because I don't think I was exactly on pitch, and I want to figure out a sidechain or EQ compression solution to let that "triplet" guitar stand out more during the choruses.  The drums might get lost a little bit during the last chorus, and the overall bass guitar may be a little too loud.  I am not that worried about it, however!

Microphone notes:
Rode NT-1A: Vocals, Drum overhead, tambourine
Shure SM7B: Kick drum
Shure SM57: Guitar and bass amp

No fun: you reached Elliot Smith Level. Be careful! This was greater than great!

This is pro. And great fun.

Don’t know if it’s the best thing you’ve ever done, but it is really amazing.

this just about sums it up. solid tune!

This might indeed be the best thing you ve ever done. I love the vocal harmonies which have this Alice in Chains feel going on.
Absolutely addictivz track. Great Great work!!

Dude. I mean. Just. Dude. Woah. smile This is crazy good. Easily could be the best thing you've ever done, it feels like it's come straight from an Ultimate 90s Alternate Rock compilation, in a good way.

Awesome! Pro indeed, great writing and recording here! Huge drum sound for two mics, I've tried that, it's tough! I hear you on the love hate love affair of songs - the endless cycle.

The drums sound badass.  Heck, the whole thing sounds great.  Really a nice full band sound.  Yeah, I've totally been there on the love it hate it love it thing.  But this is love-worthy for sure.

Mad skills, great vocals, drums sound great, not typically the kind of music I listen to, but this could change my mind, thoroughly enjoyed!

Just great! Besides of that i dig that shaker wink
Sound/Mix is awesome!

Really nice! I dig the drum sounds. I like the whole mix, actually. Has a 90s sort of vibe. Tasteful accent guitars. Good stuff!

really like the double tracked vocals

second on the 90s vibes with that chord progression, great vocal melody too. i could see this going in the direction of a wavves song too. awesome work

Your grunge game is great, don't trust the guy who says otherwise.

Thanks!  I'm really proud of how the "engineering" turned out!

Awesome!  I like how you put periods after each word, I can totally hear you saying that out loud.  I'm so glad you like it.

Oooh, glad I could give you another perspective!  Thanks for the vocal compliment, I'm still a little weird about a few of the lines, but I can always fix them.

Thanks Bud - I tried not to use them the entire song and punch it up in spots

Thanks so much.  The vocal melody was weird to write and I was really unsure of it at times.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Deeply appreciated, Devieus!  I'm a huge Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana fan smile

Wow! Perfect 90's vibe. Great production and a song that would not be out of place on quite a few of the classic albums from that era, based on it's song writing quality alone. Amazing track!

Ahh.. absolute Pro
I Like your lyrics

Man, beautiful track. What a great vocal and the drums sound really lush. Little more gated verb and you'd be rocking a John Bonham beat.  Really well done.

Cool track!  Kind of an upbeat version of Alice in Chains if that makes sense?

Very flattering words, thank you!
