Let It Ring (Disco Punk)

By orangedrink on May 3, 2020 11:05 pm

This is a new version of a song I wrote for WeeklyBeats 2018, week 27, which then ended up on my new album, This Is Orange Drink.  Here's the original version:

Amazingly, this song made it to #1 on the Alt Q Radio top 20 after being on the charts for around 6 weeks!

I made this song for my show last Friday, and premiered it live.  I sang and played electric guitar live; it was super fun.  The drums are from Reason, everything else is done by me.  I'm especially proud of the tambourine, which was had a "leg-hit-accent".  Hope you like it!

Are the vocals too loud?  Is the bass too loud?  I mastered this in Reason, but I want to take another crack at it once I learn how to use Ozone.  My goal for next week is to RESPOND TO ALL THE COMMENTS......stay tuned smile

Your tunes are always so good. So I assume you learned to use Ozone.

yes, I like this one. especially the ending is bombastic. a cool alternative powerplay. the highs in the mix  dominate by the guitar. I guess that was done on purpose.(?)

Nice track! I don't think the mixing is off at all. I just got Ozone as well and am pumped to learn it.

vocals are on point!!! the mix sounds pretty good overall, but maybe dropping the bass a few dB wouldn't hurt. i really like the guitar sound too, very 90's alternative - reminds me of number girl and r.e.m. with the high end overdrive jangle?

Yess this goes so hard. Love the pace and energy heart Great vocal processing. It all sounds pretty nice and balanced to me!

Awesome upbeat reimagining of the 2018 classic. I was picking up a Devo whip it vibe off the intro drums (I get excited about anything Devo related).  That disco beat and guitar really pump up the energy level. Could listen to this all day on loop!  Faved and downloading.  Vocal level sounds good to me.

Thanks so much!  Haven't learned Ozone mastering yet, did this with Reason MClass mastering tools (which are still very powerful)

Thank you!  Yeah, I think I wanted the guitars loud and screaming smile

Thanks so much!  Nice unintentional pun there with mastering software and "pumped" LOL big_smile

Thanks!  I might drop the bass 1db (DROP THE BASS!) oh man, I am totally busted because I was listening to R.E.M.'s Monster and New Adventures In Hi-Fi last week!  I didn't think I was channeling them, but it is so interesting how we are influenced by things, whether we realize it or not!  I heart R.E.M.

Thank you for validating that I was INDEED going in hard!  BOOM  I love the WB family

You are so supportive of me and all I want to do is make you proud!  ::happy tears::  Devo are def the godfathers of disco punk so it's all I could ask to remind someone of them.  Yeah, I did hear that beat and immediately thought: "this is dope" - thanks for listening Mike (dude your new website is rad)

Still relevant!

There is a little bit of R.E.M. circa Monster vibe on this.  No shame in that.  I always thought that was a super underrated album.  I was pretty obsessed with R.E.M. throughout high school.  The guitars rock!

Vocals sound great, definitely not too loud, actually everything is mixed very well, love that last “let it ring” to finish things off.

When I was a kid I ordered 5 REM albums from Columbia House because it was the only band I recognized and I loved Monster! Still do.

Anyway, this track is awesome. I love it.

You punk!

Very fun track. I do own the "element" version of Ozone 8, and I just press on the master assistant button when I am on the loudest part of the track, leave the plugin do the rest. lol. Cool song.

This makes me want to dance around and shake it all out! Energy release! Yep, tambourine is tip tops, good move with the leg accent. Great vocals. I kind of agree with the REM references, but pure OD! The original is powerful, but I think I like this one more, because tambo and beats and stuff!!

Gotta go catch up on more of your tracks now, and looking forward to watching a live YouTube show too!

this is so cool!!

The guitar progression is so addictive and sent me back a bit to the mid90s because of how catchy it is.  Then the vocals and bassline just solidify it all.  Really good vocal harmonies too. Yay i'm part of the cool kids club!

I literally just said "uh oh" out loud as I hit submit.  I stupidly assumed the soundcloud track was the updated version lol.  No wonder it sounded familiar!  I think someone gave me decaf today!  *presses the correct play button*  "oh yes this is disco punk!"  Ooooh leg tambos o'my!  I like the energy of this version especially with that extra guitar solo at the end.  Oh and the vox don't sound too loud, just right!  (sorry for the misinformed comment) either way I like both versions! tongue

R.E.M. rules, and again, I'm flattered to garner comparison!  'Crush With Eyeliner' made me go out and buy a vibrato pedal smile

Thank you!  Thanks for the mixing confirmation.  I also love the end scream, I went off the rails on that one!

New Adventures In Hi-Fi and Monster are actually the only albums that I own, I need to get more - any recs?

LOL I can't wait to have my own little mastering robo-intern that I can yell at to master my tracks smile

The YouTube shows are archived as well - next one is 5/15 - thanks, the tambo really changed things for me - I got chills when I hit playback.

Thank you for the unintentional DOUBLE track comment!  You win the award for listening to two OD tracks in one week.  I'm glad everyone likes the tambo!  Yeah, the tambourine and the guitar lead at the end make the track what it is for me.  Glad you like both! heart

Thanks everyone!

HEY LOOK I RESPONDED IN LESS THAN A WEEK - U DIDN'T THINK I COULD DO IT DID YOU???

This is a real head banger man! Have you tried doubling your vocals? I think that would be the cherry on top for this.

To be honest, I liked the other one better, though the energy fits the lyrics better. Maybe up the vocals a bit to punk it up.

Very cool and catchy tune.  Nice one!

drums are HELLA PUNCHY and HYPEEEEEE. is this recorded on your kit? to me it sounds like programmed/sampled drums. super impressed. what was your drum recording technique?

overall this is an awesome remix! the ending is particularly unhinged, love the guitars

on my headphones everything sounds "mid-treble forward" but I think that's more of a mastering preference than anything. like this def falls into a more aggro-crunch mastering territory than warm and gooey, if that makes sense.

zirafa wrote:

Nooooooo!  Why must you start these career-ending rumors??????  The drums are a sample loop from Reason - they had some fills, which were cool, but empty sounding, so I overlaid them on the main beat loop.  Also strangely missing a crash cymbal, so I found a good one that I liked.  Flattered that you think I could play this tight, this fast.  Definitely working my way up, but gotta get my kick foot on the program!  I've been doing calf raises multiple times a week smile

Glad you liked the song!  Tried to self-destruct the piece at the end smile

Thanks for your mastering comments - mixing and mastering your own work is fascinating to me (rather than the industry standard of separate engineers) because you can think "Do I want to crunch this now, or do I want to crunch this later?" - so aggro-crunch mid-treble forward seems okay preference-wise in terms of related work in this genre/style.

Man, the energy and the vocals on this, so fucking hot.
