congrats on qualifying for the battle - good luck!  dig the video and the driving footage (and the dog)

Yes indeed! That trumpet solo had some jazz going on. I dig. Great bass tone, and nice job on the drums.

Congratulations to making the competition! Do you make a new song for it, or it's one you already play? Nice video, I like all the instruments having a different color, and great drums playing big_smile

Drew is getting solid on the drums! smile

I really do like how they are tuned. Big fan of the trumpet again. Nice smooth track, And congrats on the battle of the beats entry! good job. hope you can get far into the contest.

It was cool to see the new keyboard in action.  I sort of understood what you were talking about with the chord thing when you described it, but it made even more sense seeing it.  Love the trumpet as always and congrats on getting into the competition and good luck!

WOOOT. Congrats on making it in! Cool vibe on this track, that little piano progression is a nice foundation for a laid back jam. Drums and bass sound great, and now I'm also just in general a big fan of the trumpet when it rolls in. Seriously, it's such an underrated instrument (at least for rock oriented music) capable of big moods.

I really dug that one for sure! Your drumming is really grooving on this one. I thought that keyboard had a really nice sound to it and your trumpet sounds really nice at the end there. This was a really nice track that I will definitely listen to again. Congrats on making the competition, good luck!

The trompet fits perfectly into the track. Very smooth and jazzy indeed.
I hope you put the refrigerator plug back into the power after the videoshooting. (?)

Orange Drink Unplugged! Congratulations on the first round of the beat battle!!

The drumming and trumpet really nail the jazz vibe. the trumpet compliments and colors the chords. Love to hear the different style of your drumming and bass playing this week. Especially enjoy the sound with the intercut driving footage in the video.

My Arturia Keystep (not to be confused with the Hatestep Pro OD patent pending) doesn't do that chord feature! Or maybe it does? What model is that? I'm a big fan of all their tiny keyboards. Minimalist and very sturdy... and never break.

Neat beat! And congrats on making the cut for the competition. Rooting for you! big_smile

this is nice, i love the trumpet at the end, very contemplateive

Congrats! You are already one 16th of a winner!

This track conveyed a feeling of transition, of being in between worlds. The video may be what reminded me of this, between the cleaning up of the place, and also the trip on the road. It has this slightly intemporal atmosphere. I really liked the trumpet sound, with the reverb, amplified by the light you used in the video.

Best of luck in the competition!

So after trying to find a raw, acoustic hat for the house track, I'm now realizing YOU GOT THE PERFECT HIHAT. I'm fully aware how selfish it is go hear a piece of music and go ME ME ME I WANT THIS SOUND, but I guess after listening for hats for a while I'm still like "OD got that hat" in both of your last two.

Speaking of "your last two" -- this is a delightful diptych of sorts, where two very different looping "bases" developed. (Do I sense an EP in the works? Or a single w/ a B-SIDE for once?)

This is just amazing wow, love the atmosphere you created and the mix sounds really organic and fat. Love the drum sounds

Very bright piece, my man.

This song is so dreamy.  I've had a tense sorta feeling in my chest all afternoon & this is really soothing.

I hope you keep us posted on the contest!  So excited for you!!!

The video - made me feel so nostalgic for the days of driving to MKE for shows.  It made me realize I haven't been on a highway at night like that since the Pandemic began.  It's really inspiring to watch you play all the things - you one person band you! You are amazing! (yay for new synths & loved the Frank paintings & adorable support team cameo's as well)

I was worried about this too - inquiring minds want to know - did you remember to plug them back in?

For the competition you can bring things you’ve already made, but I think i’m going to try to re-arrange a few things so they are more exciting in a contest setting!  Might make a new track if I have the time.  Glad you noticed the colors!  A last-second idea smile

Thank you fellow drummer!  I always struggle with tuning but I really did tune them this past week (if not the week before).  I still think I should dampen the bottom head of my floor tom, but who knows!  Thanks!

Thanks so much, I’m excited/nervous/sure it will be fun.  It cost a little to upgrade, but I think that feature is so cool!  Nice change of pace from an arpeggio.

Thanks buddy!!  Slowly getting more comfortable on the trumpet!

I love it when you say TROMPET smile  I did put the plug back in, watch the last 5 seconds of the video! smile

It’s the Arturia Keystep 37.  It maybe cost me around $100 to trade in my old Keystep and buy a good condition used one at my local shop, but it wrote a song for me, so it’s worth it!    And you have some extra range with more keys.  I highly recommend it.  Imagine what you could do coordinating it with the Hatestep!  lolz  My next thing is to hook it up to my Roland Boutique Juno!!

Thanks so much.  I really felt in between worlds.  I didn’t know if the song should be more improvised or more repetitive - longer or shorter!  Glad you liked the light, I thought it amplifed the mood.  Intemporal Atmosphere sounds like a Kedbreak song title.

I’m putting “record hi-hats” for ilzxc on my to-do list.  I’ll do a couple of different tempos and play for a few so you can do loops or sample or whatever!  I really love the hi-hat because it has just the slightest amount of trash to it, and the larger size makes the “pedal sizzle” more “swooshy” (PHD music terms, FYI)

“OD got that hat” - good sticker idea!

wow, that could be an EP right there with the loopin’  nice idea!

I’m so grateful that this piece was able to resonate with you and maybe even help you feel better.

Thank you so much, it’s wild to be putting myself out there, but I am trying to be less ashamed of being a one-person band!  I know it can be not easy for all of us to accept compliments and acknowledge our talents.  Thanks for the special note about the Frank paintings - glad you caught that!!

It always depends of the vibe you are looking for. I personally like my drums to be lively, but agreed that "vintage" dry sounds are pretty cool too. I usually tune them way lower (at least for the floor) than what you did, but again, depends on what we are looking for, and not all drum sweet spot are the same. If you have some time to loose, this guy is such a geek about tuning https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYTmGA … 1z_pgp3ypw. (I never even used a tuner to tune mines, I am more about feel than anything, trying to find a place where the shell-drums head feel lively)

djippy wrote:

WOW!  How did I live without this channel!  This is amazing!  Uh oh, I'm about to spend 2 months watching every single video.  Thank you smile

yeah - I bought one of those "drum dials" but i'm not really sure it does anything.  Really good point about the feel.  If it feels good, then you can play it more and get more sounds out of it - as opposed to a wood block where there is one feel and one sound.

Yay for new gear and how it helps spark new ideas.  The piano sounds awesome.  Just enough warmth in there that it almost sounds sampled.  Then combined with that sweet 70s feel bass damn I thought I was listening to Zero 7 or Radiohead's From The Basement sessions.  Then it gets some nice sparkly treatment and oof the ultimate vintage tr0mpet kicks in.  Maybe it's cuz I was playing Genesis Noir recently but this gave me dark rainy nights at a corner diner feels.  Yais i like.

First off, excellent production on this track! Drums are super punchy/compressed, piano is clean & crispy but with some slight warble, bass is warm and glues everything together. Feels like a very balanced, cohesive mix, but still sways and blooms in colorful and exciting ways.

The arp/piano chord changes gives me a bit of a Machinedrum - Infinite Us feeling (I think it's safe to say we both love that track). Hint of introspection, bit of nostalgia.

I think you've ventured into jazz territory before on guitar, maybe not intentionally, but some of the 7th chords or colorful cluster chord choices you play on guitar contain jazz-like qualities. Which maybe speaks to how instrument choice and song arrangement make a big impression on the sound & genre -- playing 7th chords on piano sounds jazzy, but on guitar with a bit of distortion the same chords may sound more like rock/post-rock.

Really dig this one, nice work!

Drums and bass were on point, then you dropped that trumpet, love when you drop that trumpet, congrats on the beat competition, wish I could be there, closest I will be is Detroit this Wednesday

Wow!  This is incredible.  I can't believe how talented you are.  Congrats on the beat battle too!  Is it being streamed via the internet somewhere?  If so how can I watch?

Thank you, I threw in some warbles on the piano and I thought it really made a big difference.  WOW great compliment about Zero7/Radiohead FTB.  Thanks you.  Genesis Noir looks awesome!

Catching up on old replies but thank you!  This was supposed to be my “Makeshift Drifters” track, so I’m glad you liked it.  Yes, “Infinite Us” for the win - luckily the KeyStep has a “instant awesome” button!

That’s interesting about instrument choice - I feel like my drumset, guitar, and trumpet all are rooted in “jazz” or maybe “surf rock”?  but maybe surf rock is really the jazz influence into rock?
