Blip Fest

By orangedrink on December 6, 2020 11:55 pm

All the sounds are from an original Nintendo.  MIDI programmed on an Digitakt and controlled via MIDInes cartridge.  I programmed the Digitakt, then recorded the output live as I moved from pattern to pattern and did slight parameter changes (mainly pulse width).  After recording, I truncated the recording for CONCISION wink and added some effects via Ableton Live: repeat editing, Auto Filter, Filter Delay, Redux, EQ Three, and EQ Eight.  I also overlayed some white noise sweeps made with the Nintendo, but technically the sound could not have been made from the Nintendo because the noise channel was otherwise engaged.  The NES has 5 audio channels: two pulse channels, one triangle channel (which I used for bass), a noise channel (used for hi-hats, snare, and white noise), and a sample channel (kick drum and other samples, like the little triangle plink).  Mastered with Ozone 9.

Dedicated to everyone who was part of the Blip Festival.

My Blue Sky EXO 2.1 monitors (two sets of three speakers per set) were deemed unrepairable by my repair guy, as the manufacture has discontinued the PCB needed.  Moment of silence for my monitors that I've been using for maybe over 10 years.

So now I am the proud owner of some KRK Rokit 5 G4s, just like our fellow WBer, ToneMatrix!  I am also getting a back ordered subwoofer.  So, a good week to make Chipmusic smile  I hope everyone is doing well and Happy Hanukkah in advance.  I would love to hear how everyone is doing.  If there is anything I can do to help anyone during this time, please let me know.

Here are my gigantic goals for the end of the year:

- Record the Model:Cycles + Guitar song I started in October
- Record two long unrecorded Orange Drink songs (from 2005!)
- Respond to all comments
- Listen to and comment on a reasonable amount of tracks by the "WB Ultra Homies"
- Secret Surprise

New DJ pic for the final month!

Me just trying to understand all the music tech explanation at the beginning haha. Really cool tune, lots of texture throughout, very dynamic smile. And I'm always a sucker for arps that fade in at some point during the song haha.

Congrats on your new purchase and I hope you meet your remaining goals for the year smile

LOL, the irony of someone like me making a technical comment.  I bought the MIDInes probably in 2007 and I just have never been able to figure out how to get it working.  Finally I got the Digitakt and programming MIDI is the same as programming a drumbeat.  So, I credit the Digitakt because it is just so powerful and easy to use (uh, kinda) smile  I appreciate that you said it was dynamic, I was trying to make it sound more than SECTION A, SECTION B, SECTION A, SECTION B.  It's hard to do dynamics with a straight pulsewave, so hopefully the FX and transitions spiced it up.  Thanks for your support!  So excited to have real working speakers smile

Damn dude this is wild.  I dont understand most of what you described about how you made it or about how the whole chiptune thing works in general but I enjoyed listening.

Also, sorry/congrats on your old/new monitors.  Sucks you couldnt fix the old ones but I guess no better time to find out than black friday season, right?

Some of it sounds recognizably like it came from a Nintendo, but I don't think I would have guessed that's where all the sounds came from.  Some of the percussion sounds beefier than what I would expect.

Very cool track, love the energy there.

Ah very nice track! I love how you went with the constraint of the machine and did a whole cool track with it.

I always love the sound of noise as hihats, great chip tune track, has lots of variety and great use of effects.  Those are some lofty goals for the next few weeks, just try your best and no big deal if you can’t meet all those goals.  Got me intrigued, what is the secret surprise?

This track has a powerful roughness. I am not so much into chipmusic, but this one has good dancefloor quality and really is outstanding in its production. well done.

These nintendo sounds are so good

Great chippy fun. The sounds you pulled together sound greater, warmer than some I hear. Good job bringing stuff in and out and such too. Nice goals for the rest of year, here's the home stretch, let's do this!

Love the noise channel rhythms!  So cool.  Lots of classic NES tones.

RIP Monitors

fun blips

Wow! That's epic! I can't believe you managed to program a Nintendo and got those authentic Blip's and Bloops!! Sounds amazing!!

Congrats on the New Speakers and good luck with ur Sub!!

XxX

yay i gots a shoutout!  I hope the KRKs are working out well for you.  Make sure you download their KRK Audio Tools app to help you adjust them in your space and such.  I used it once basically but it made me feel slightly more confident in how I had them aimed at me in my room.
Loving the NES bits of this throughout.  Especially those fade in arps.  This has an epic side-scroller feel to it where the levels advance with an ever changing background.  Love the filtered breakdown towards the end too.  YAIS! *jumps up and freezes 80s style*
PS Derek looks like he's questioning the KRK addition tho.  It wasn't me! *runs*

nice

How are your new krk monitors doing? Even if you could fix the pcb, you are probably better off with the krks imo!
