The Transformation of Orion Pax

By NWSPR on December 6, 2020 11:57 pm

This week's track is inspired by the older transformer TV series soundtrack (not the films, they are just shit). I've been watching a lot of transformers with my son during our partial lockdown and am learning a lot of important stuff.  Orion Pax is a data clerk on Cybertron that eventually regains his lost memories that he is one of the 13 original Primes and one again becomes Optimus Prime after a series of unexpected events that lead to the rise of the Decepticons. He is the last Prime, and his theme is heroic.

Had trouble with orchestral layouts sounding too mechanical so I took off all quantitization and mixed in hand played Moogs and guitar to make for alive.  The last section includes my bass guitar for a short cameo in the rock outro.  I spent all day on this smile Lot's of fun.  Hope it sounds okay.  Needs more mixing and mastering but only four minutes to go.

IMPORTANT STUFF: Some may remember from past postings that I am the producer and founder of Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival which ran last September.  I am starting to plan 2021 and will be producing a compilation called something like The International Sounds of Brooklyn SciFi.  Would love to include your Sci-Fi, Future Sound, Fun, or Dystopian track on this comp.  Please let me know if you would like to submit a track and I'll get details before the year is up.  Here is the festival website with this year's films https://2020.brooklynscififilmfest.com/

We're all living in a scifi world this year so make the best of it.  If you can have a film completed by June, please send that my way.

Be well! Stay safe... Only a few weeks to go.

Oh yeah, I used to watch the Transformers cartoon in the 80's.  Been forever since I watched it (like probably since the 80's), but this definitely fits my memories of what the music kind of sounded like.  A good nostalgia trip for sure.  Also the 80's cartoon movie was decent... at least from what I remember.  Much better than the horrible Michael Bay films.  It was kind of shocking at the time because it killed off several major characters and even had a couple swear words.

Wow, this is awesome man.  You're not the person I expected to see when I heard it start to play.  All the orchestral stuff sounds great from a mixing standpoint as is and the amount of detail put into it is nuts.  Love the outro with the synths and guitar too, such a kickass way to close it out.

Thanks!  I really appreciate you calling out the detail. I spent all day layering the orchestral sounds, hand playing and editing to try and get a thick, full sound.  I've been wanting to learn more about this kind of arranging. Really appreciate the positive comment because you have great arrangements and mixes smile

The 80s series was the bomb! We've been watching the 3D animated series from about 10 or 15 years ago which is really fun.  No swear words unless you count the gratuitous use of the word "SCRAP!" as a stand in for any bad word.

One thing I forgot to mention in my description is that in this series, they explain Orion Pax was more light hearted than Optimus Prime. But when he becomes a prime, he can no longer laugh or show too much emotion. He gave up his old life to assume the responsibility, so that's why he's so stiff in all the shows. Intense concept to explain to young viewers. I tried to reflect that sadness in the theme as well and it's the major driver for the arrangement.

Love it when the strings come in. Nice work dude!

Epic

Ah I loved the transformers in the 80s, the old toys etc. I think we had the best toys in the 80s, between transformers, GI Joe, He-Man and M.A.S.K but then I am biased.

This is an epic track. I find the second movement especially cool with all the small details (is that flutes in the background from 2:03 onward)? The transition to 2:25 is dramatic and I like the classical soundtrack beat around 2:45 before plunging into more modern instruments (and the bass)!

My ride...

I like the ambiance of the track. Nice intense cinematic with touch of 80's synths.

I can obviously hear, that you have spend a lot of effort to compose this one, all day long. It has so many details and is ballanced very well. very very good job.

Some great stuff here, wonderful movements, awesome sounds, totally epic.

I'll gladly submit stuff to the festival if you'll have me.

Also you misspelled "Decepticons".

You have a diverse range of skills! This fits your theme perfectly. I'm a child of the 80s, loved transformers and all the rest! The music makes it! I don't remember this story of Orion, but that's a good one. Love it when the common bot rises up! Nice work.

I'd love to submit a track for your sci-fi comp, hit me with the deets!

So epic! Love how it builds up. Did you slip some vocals in there near the end, or am I hearing things?

Very cool.  Full epic 80's scifi vibes here.  Love that synth vibrato!  Haha.  I could almost visualise full power chord rock coming in with it all.

By the way, if there is any way I can contribute to your project "The International Sounds of Brooklyn SciFi" that'd be awesome!

Thanks!  Need to work on more natural strings.  That will be my 2021 project.

Yeah, those were all cool toys!  Thanks for checking it out.  Those are flutes and woodwinds in the mid section.

I corrected that typo smile Would love to have a track from you.  I've set up a contact form here but I'll make sure you're on the list and contact you closer to the festival. https://brooklynscififilmfest.com/music-submission

Yep, there is some vocoder in the bridge. Took me longer to set up the vocoder keyboard, mic and patch, than it did to record that one line "Orion Pax is Optimus Prime" and then bury it in the mix.

It really does preface the next movement well.  Very cliche, but that power chord rock was destined to follow the wailing synth smile

Yes!  That would be great.  Start thinking of tracks that would fit into the scifi genre or craft something new.  We have time since I'll put this together over the summer.  Please submit your info at this form and I'll add you to the list.  https://brooklynscififilmfest.com/music-submission Thanks!

This is wild, I was listening without looking at the computer screen and was thinking, "This is some epic He-Man action right here" and looks like I was off by 30 minutes!
(that's a hilarious joke about Saturday Morning Cartoon Line Ups)

Great track, I like how you are adding in this orchestral touches - takes you out of that garage band punk vibe and makes you more arena (but you are still punk, don't worry) wink

This was one epic ride and revisit to my childhood.  Those 80s cartoons were the best.  This was a fun listen.  Nice work!
