Windmill Hill

By onezero on September 8, 2024 7:38 pm

A somewhat lower-key weekend, recovering from some booster-induced exhaustion, as well as a week with two full-length releases: one ambient, and one a collection of recent weekly pieces from this year. Even with all that, one Saturday-night tracking session has resulted in a busier, more lush piece than I would have predicted. This one's on standard-tuned PureSalem Mendiola, just three tracks, no inline effects, just a bit of the convolution reverb and stereo compression/eq.

The title's from a place just off the A558, east of Runcorn.

love it!
doesn't have to be on here, but I'd be interested to know why you prefer convolution reverb over other forms? I understand the basics of how it works, but would love to hear your thoughts on what you like about it. even if it's just, "it sounds better to me, don't question my brilliance." I'm not sure I have the detailed listening skills yet to always pick up in subtle (or not so subtle, ha) differences with reverbs. I do know your tracks always sound great to me.

Thank you!

Convolution processing is a transformation of one audio stream by another. Most commonly it's used as a reverb: someone goes to a space and records the sound of a handclap or starter pistol. Then that recording can be used to simulate other sounds being played in that space. For me, the benefit of using a convolution processor as a reverb is that you get the sound as it would be in a particular room, rather than "I'm tweaking a reverb algorithm to be something like the sound of a particular place." With just one plugin, I have access to whichever spaces for which I have recordings. I tend to jump around with which ones I prefer--sometimes a smaller room, sometime a theater or church space.

One doesn't have to use an impulse/spike sound, though--you could process one sound against the sound of a guitar chord, or synth pad. Similarly, you don't have to use a real space as a reverb: if you really like the sound of a grainy reverb processor (like the Alesis 12-bit ones of the 90s!), you could put an impulse through, record it, and now you've captured the sound you want.

that makes sense as to why that would be preferable. thanks for the explanation!

You're welcome! It really is a kind of magic, I think!

You took me to a magical space regardless of some fancy acoustic modeling wink

Loving sounds

I like those intimate sounds, the harmony is evolving enough not to be boring, but the strumming is regular enough to be comforting. The reverb choice is fantastic!

loved reading about the convolution processing transformation magic

explains why i feel transported whenever a onezero or snvwv piece is playing heart
