West Branch

By onezero on September 1, 2024 10:43 pm

A return to the hollowbody Univox in Bb F Bb F Bb C tuning. Three tracks of fingerpicking, no inline effects, a touch of convolution reverb, and the usual multiband compression/eq on the stereo out.

Tracked in two late-night sessions, Friday and Saturday. Going in, I didn't think I had a lot of ideas, but that fingerpicking ostinato appeared, and this ended up being a lot stronger of a piece than I expected. I went with 106 bpm out of the thought of doing another half-time Hit Em piece, but 5/4 didn't suit this pattern, so it's 4/4 at 106. I listened again six hours after submitting this, and...there was one note close to an edit that stood out, so I removed it.

The title comes from the West Branch of the Escanaba River, over which there's a historic bridge carrying county route 557.

Wow! This is such a beautiful song. Beautiful arrangement too. And, of course, nice playing! wink

Thank you! I'm glad you like it!

the finger picking really brings out some nice delicate subtleties in your playing, everything fits together in such a pleasant and calm manner. and i love how those low notes are hitting.  heart

I feel better now I listened to your track smile

Thank you! I think the straight-to-the-board thing is very revealing, for good or for ill. Lots of little variants in hand pressure or position really come through. It's a challenge to play things consistently throughout!

I'll also mention here that West Branch is the title track of my new collection of guitar-only pieces with this guitar in this tuning.

It's so relaxing. I don't know what this bridge looks like (perhaps in the future you can add a picture to your references), but I can imagine one listening to this.

Thank you! The bridge...is short. But the number of the piece led to the route, which led to the Escanaba River, and I have a fondness for Michigan's UP. (Admittedly, the photo I used on the cover of the Bandcamp release...is not the West Branch of the Escanaba River, but a much wider one near me that resonated.)

With a name like Gwinn, I'd've thought it was in Ireland, and still, it's not too far off what I imagined (a different hill).
