Lough Leane

I started on this one late Friday, with the first phrase coming to mind (heard as the first theme in the left channel) manifesting in 7/4 time, so I kept with that time signature. The challenge was making the parts make sense with that constraint, since many of my reflexes are in 4 time--in some cases you'll hear an idea run out before the bar, or seem like it would naturally end a bit later. Still, the creative friction was interesting. Unexpected melodies showed up, and were definitely worth keeping.

As I've been doing for most recent pieces, this is three tracks of the same guitar with no effects, this time with the PureSalem in standard tuning. (I really have to change strings soon--there's quite a dent in the wrap of the D.) Some convolution reverb (small theater), and some multi-band compresson/eq.

The title comes from Lough Leane, near the R563.

so chimey and almost playful. the 7/4 gives a nice sway to the interconnecting lines, i really enjoyed this. nice to be in the small theater with you!

Lovely harmonies. Very melancholy. Feels super emo, which I love

The flow is so smooth, it's hard to make out the odd signature. Not a bad thing, just very smooth.

Great tone on the guitar parts, and man 7/4 seems like an interesting challenge for interlocking melodic voices... I might have to give that a shot at some point.

what a lovely soundspace

Love how you kept the raw guitar sound intact. It's a beautifully sounding instrument and you know what you're doing with it. Precise but with plenty of feel. Beautiful!

I'm only seriously picking up guitar now, so music like yours is definitely something to aspire to! I also went with clean tones for my W42 entry.

This is a really nice soundscape! The odd time signature is well hidden - fits perfectly and gives a lovely relaxed feel. Love the tone of the guitars. Those melodies really do shine through too!

Thank you, Josh! I do like the "waltz, waltz, breath" aspect of 7/4--there's a flow to it. (It's a bit odd to be getting chimey sounds out of these strings after over four years. Maybe I should keep up until one breaks.)

Thank you! There's a melancholy there, definitely, though I also hear a sweetness in some of the harmonic lines, which was also a pleasant surprise when I realized what I'd tracked.

Thank you! I think the naturalness is what makes it tricky to spot. It could be 4/4 + 3/4, or two 3/4s and one extra beat.

Thank you! I'd recommend it! It's a neat constraint that I find shaking me out of a 4/4 comfort zone.

Thank you, Emily! That's a beautiful image--I hadn't realized how striking that landscape is!

Thank you! I'm finding that this no-pedals style reveals the differences in tone that are possible with just changing finger position. There's a lot of variety one can get just by moving around, varying touch, pressure, etc.

I totally encourage picking up guitar! It's challenging, but rewarding. I'll check out your 42!

Thank you! This one definitely felt like something new for me.

Oh wow, fascinating hearing this after listening to your track from this week. This one feels much more "locked in" to a 3 + 4 feel and has a much brighter tone overall. Both tracks have some taaasty playing though and are a treat to listen to this morning.
