SL-1 Reactor Incident

By NickLong on May 2, 2026 10:03 pm

This was my attempt to make a track in the style of Tool or Deftones using a crazy time signature, but with a melody which fit over it naturally without sounding jarring.

I was also building on my themes of mixing 3 and 2 and my Stravinsky DnB experiment where it changes time signature every bar.

This song alternatest between 4/4, 3/8, 4/4, 6/8, 4/4, 9/8 or 21/4 would be another way of looking at it, but good luck counting that big_smile

It was made with:
Drums: Modern and Massive 2
Guitar: Neural Gojira and Nameless
Bass: Neural Darkglass

The song is about the real life incident of the SL-1 experimental reactor which has always fascinated me.
In 1961 an operator pulled out a control rod causing the reactor to explode and kill all 3 people present. The great mystery is that anyone working on the reactor would know the consequences, but given no one survived it's unknown why he did it.

Lyrics
Cold in the core
We are the lost crew
Restarting
SL-1

Pull the rods
Boiling the water
The damage  Is now done

Flashing blue and bursting out
Through the heart
We made a water hammer suicide
Blown Appart
Vapourised

Thrown in the air
Nailed to the ceiling
Impaled by SL-1

Buried in lead
No heroes vigil
Locked under
Poisoned earth

Flashing blue and bursting out
Through the heart
We made a water hammer suicide
Blown Appart
Vapourised

This is rad. smile

I think it was successful! Very much vibing

Wow... this has such a distinct early 2000s metal sound, I feel like the great genre chameleon PaisleyFrog would really appreciate this (I have no idea how to tag him lol). Really on point sound-wise for the lyrics too, just excellent.

This brings me straight back to the 2000s

Shouldn't you be able to by "quoting" them in here? big_smile

hell yais! \m/ Definitely hearing the Tool/Deftones influence and getting Chevelle vibes as well with your vocals.  Had to listen twice because the end made me want m0ar! The guitars sound friggin awesome and so thick with that bass.  Faved! \m/

Well played , the time signature experimentation didn't feel forced at all. Sorcery!

Sounded great too!

Definitely an aggressive vibe this week I'm seeing, always love some good ol' chugs mad

Fuck yeah, awesome work hitting all the metal hallmarks!
The weird time signatures, but especially the vocal performance is very reminicent of Tool.

Let me pop on that blue color-grade filter and grab the leather. That chug + dark clean guitar combo is on point, and the heavier layering at the end of the loop sounds great. The melody does end up riding nicely over the rhythm, and keeping the harmony simpler helps keep the focus on that rhythm.

I didn't know about SL-1, but the Demon Core story is in that lane and also morbidly fascinating

NAILED IT

i was wondering where you were going to go with the vocals before they kicked in, cuz that intro is so killer but also... not easy to sing over! very impressed, nice work   \m/

oh, gonna try tagging The Frog to make sure he hears this one!

GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY.

I've been wanting to play around with odd time signatures, but this is like the tactical nuclear weapon (reactor?) of odd signatures. Masterfully assembled and executed.

Definitely evokes feelings of Tool (particularly with that amazing vocal performance), but I like what you did here a LOT more. I love the heaviness of the riffing paired with that erratic signature...which is definitely weird, but doesn't feel weird for its own sake. Which is one helluva tightrope to walk. It grooves!

Absolutely love the lyrics. Metal AF and flavors of sci-fi, but being pulled from history makes it even better.

I would 100% listen to a concept album of this. Brilliant and inspiring. Favorited.

Thanks for the shout out and glad the sound hit the right notes for you to evoke the sounds I was going for!

I think given the current state of the world I think we'd all want to be back there rocking out to Deftones and Tool big_smile

Wow thanks!

Glad you liked the guitars, it's Neural DSP the amps sims are next level good.

Great I really wanted it to be like Genesis where it doesn't sound forced but the time is crazy

To be clear the vocals are programmed rather than sung. Hxvoc is very cool.

Thanks for the on point analysis as always.

Yeah the demon core is another story that freaks me out.

Welcome to the (metal) party.

So glad you came to take a look.
Thanks for the insightful analysis
Really looking forward to checking our your stuff!

Damn, dude. Your voice. I would LOVE to sing that well. Holy forking shirtballs.
And yeah, you made the meters work for you instead of the other way around. Masterfully done.

Super solid prog/nu metal track! Great vocals, too.

Wow I did not expect this cool I grew up with Tool and Deftones and you did a great job honouring their style. Well done!
