Mediant Mini Boss

By NickLong on January 11, 2026 7:30 pm

A chip tune style track. The idea was to evoke the sound of a boss fight in an NES game like Castlevania
Made with Bitwig and the 8 Bit Anthem expansion for U-He Hive.
I wanted to learn how to create a track using chromatic mediants rather than diatonic harmony.

Cor, going in heavy on the white noise there, nice.

The boss fight atmosphere really comes across well!

Yeah

I love that thunder effect.
The quality of the white noise is great in that plugin. It really has that retro crunch to it.

Really a bumper crop of great songs this week, but this is the one I’m still humming to myself over lunch today.

Thanks!

I'm trying to be a lot more intentional with my writing and get an idea of the emotions I want to evoke.

Wow that's high praise, delighted it was sticky.

This is great. Bouncy and creepy and catchy. Love the heartbeat drums and scratchy snare and ghostly melody is hummable despite the chord progression weirdness. But my favorite bit is the galloping climax, which may be very Castlevania but also sounds very melodeath to me. Nice work!

I feel like I'm living a boss fight. Great bass & percussion - like, all the sound design is perfect and the build and energy really captures that end-of-level experience right up to the pulse-pounding tempo change.

If that's the mini boss, I'd be concerned about how intense the rest of this stage is going to get.  The shithitsfan moments around ~1:00 & ~2:10 feel great

This definitely evokes Castlevania, it's gotta be that vibrato

True story I'm not sure how I'm going to make something that gets more intense than that big_smile
