A Pool in the Woods

By NickLong on January 18, 2026 8:07 pm

Following on from last weeks track this is another chiptune style track made with Bitwig and Hive 8 Bit  Anthem.

Backing up from the boss encounter of week 2 this is music from an earlier level where our hero is setting out on his journey through the enchanted woods to find the mysterious pool.

From a compositional perspective I was trying to use diminished chords and move between major and minor referencing the early Zelda games.

Sounds so full and amazing favorite

Lovely - sounds deceptively simple, but you've got a great melody and a lot going on. Chord progressions add so much to the feel.

This was a pleasent surprise. Love the chord progression.

Very solid, I hope they serve nice drinks there.

Thanks I'm really working on making my music more interesting harmonically.

I wanted to experiment with moving from major to minor/ diminished sounds.

This may be later than the "early" Zelda games you're referencing, but the main major/diminished pivot + the oompah bass makes me think of the sickly-sweet tritones in "Lost Woods." Synth horn is nice and expressive (love the rising triplets in the prechorus). And the B-section melody is able to turn up the tension while still keeping a playful, childlike vibe. It's a weird pool, but maybe not so scary?

Reminds me a little of Yuka Tsujiyoko... like for a visit to a city festival cut scene or the like.  Very nice work.
