the tides of the accretion disc (the pulsar suite four)

First - thank you to everyone for your kind words last week. It's gonna be a low-key and sad Christmas, but we're doing okay.

This is the fourth part of The Pulsar Suite, and right now, at least, the "narrative conclusion" to the story as well. I'd always planned five parts, and next week is definitely going to be a part five, but it may be a more musical coda of sorts - maybe even the "end credits".

Lyra8, Pulsar-23, Subharmonicon, Wavestate and the modular rig once again making up the foundation of the soundbed, edits in Ableton with some added instruments and vocals. The Pulsar-23, while a drum machine, has been at the centre of all these compositions, making what I imagine the "voice" of the pulsar is - here, the heartbeat, as well as the stronger crashing waves.

The story treads on themes I've worked with for a long time - the loneliness of space, shared moments in passing, the frontiers of survival and the people that inevitably find themselves at those places in-between, seeking connection, searching for someone, finding themselves.

I've included the dialogue below, since this chapter has a little more narrative meaning and maybe even a few secrets lol.

One week to go, friends, what a ride this has been. Have a great holiday, no matter what - or if - you're celebrating, and take care of yourselves.

I'm having trouble finding the right words, it's like you're able to play core emotions off each other the way you play the music against itself in parts.  In parts I felt this growing sense of dread through calming pads and the sound of waves, sadness in a moment of happiness...and maybe nostalgia in an odd way.  I'm going to need to listen to this a few times through, there is a lot going on here.

I'm also impressed with science fiction elements, both in the spoken narrative along with the musical one, it's rather grounded until you twist it just that little bit and things are just slightly off.  Another great track in the series, very much looking forward to hearing how it closes.

"you'll find me in the dark spaces between the stars
black as night
but glowing like neon."

such a perfect encapsulation of your art. it has been an absolute privilege to go on this journey.
thank you heart

This was an impressive journey into loneliness and eternity. Well done.

Long-ass track squad represent!

Joking aside, this is impressive work. I loved the entire journey, very tastefully put together. The monologue doesn't break the ambience, but extends it, builds a story. Also, that soundscape is top notch. Forgive me for saying this, but I seldom find Lyra 8 pieces that would move me, it's one of those instruments that easily go wild. This track is the rare exception, it's wonderfully unfolding and deliberate.

Beautifully cinematic. I really like how the dialog weaves into the soundscape, expands the story. And yeah, that writing is poetry.  “The dark spaces between”. I’m glad it was a somewhat restful moment after part three…I was wondering if it was going to be more tension! Very much looking forward to the conclusion of the story in week 52….what an amazing conclusion to the year.

What a treat it has been listening to these pulsar suite tracks, great progression always rewarding the listener to keep engaged, does not feel like a "long" track.  The story has been great to follow, look forward to the conclusion for the final week.

Oh.. my.. goodness.. this hits hard.  Right there with lament.config  I don't think I can properly describe how amazingly awesome this feels to listen to as it unfolds (but imma try).  The wave crashes and the opening VO just instantly hook you.  Then those distant synth swells that get held up by the Deckard kick drum sound.  Ooof and the brassy synth that just gives me visuals of the main character trudging through storm after storm determined to reach safety.  I've so enjoyed being able to discover your music this year.  I need to devote a night of listening to the Pulsar Suite.  This is an epic journey.  The tension in those brassy synths when the VO returns are gut wrenching.  Also Christopher Nolan should direct the Pulsar Suite movie js smile  Or Michael Mann? *beard_rub_emoji**

I'm so late getting back to comments lol, this last week was brutal! Nostalgia was definitely an element here, nostalgia and loneliness lol. I've got a whole novel written on this theme so digging up all these emotions and narrative elements for music is pretty easy, been living in that world for a long time, I'm really glad it has resonated with you heart

Thank you heart LONG ASS TRACK SQUAD FOREVER! And I know what you mean about the Lyra8 - honestly, and I'll sound a bit like an ass saying this, but it's easy to make the Lyra sound wild and go crazy, and people seem to love videos of gear doing crazy things... and so I think it creates that perception. It's much more challenging to use it in a controlled, subdued way, and even more difficult to do so while also honouring its more organic and untamed nature ... AKA making it do what you want but also letting it be what it is. I've been at it for years lol, I think it's like any instrument - practice and understanding.

Thank you! It's been a challenge to pare them down from the 12+ minutes of modular soundwallmess I recorded lol. I'm glad you liked the story heart

Oof. Honoured. Thank you heart. I'm really glad so many people have had such an emotional response to the music and the dialogue, really makes me feel like I achieved what I set out to do with this suite and this music. Now if we can convince Andrew Haigh to do a sci-fi film and let me score it, I can die very happy lol.

Thank you everyone heart heart heart
