the beginning of the war will be secret (grey rain - spooky season one)

WELCOME TO SPOOKY SEASON!

I mean I know last week I basically said the same thing but it's official now! That was just the teaser.

Barring disaster and my M8 failing or my brain completely jumping the tracks again, I'll be writing a mid-tempo bass-music style creepy spooky techno track every week. They will also feature a truism from the infamous Jenny Holzer as a creepy techno voice sample, and if I can keep my brain working, some spooky spoken poetry, like this week!

This week's truism: "The beginning of the war will be secret."

It was a bit of a rollercoaster production with kind of a mess but I was experimenting in every direction and learned enough to be more organized next week. The track is a monster. It crashed Abelton at least once and damn Izotope for not making plugins that retain settings on crash.

I gotta say, "The sky was ablaze with our sins" just might be one of the most terrifying lines I've read, hahahaha...
Great work bringing out the spooky, it definitely comes through!!! The sound design here is very fun and feels EXTREMELY apt for the theme. I'm excited to hear what else you come up for spooky season!!!

Great dark cinematic landscape. I love the movements and the soundscape. The usage of vocals is really good, adding to the cinematic element. I enjoyed a lot the high staccato synth of of the first section. The inverted synth lines around 3:00 are a nice touch. The rising or inverted synth around 4:00 has a really cool mechanical pulse. This track was quite a festival of industrial sounds.

Yeah, it's gonna be a good month.  I'm SUPER down for a whole month of creepy mid tempo... I love the sound design, and the arrangement is on point.  Great ebb and flow of energy levels.

i mean... come ON. i think this is the month we all needed.

love the patience here as this spoovy (thx nedsferatu!) track unfolds. the spoken word is soooo good and really sets the stage. then we are off, we may never make it back

The mid-tempo groove had me instantly and then those creepy vocals that just sit so nicely with all the other creepy synths.  Oooh the 2:20ish breakdown and that sort of breathing pad sound so good.  Bassline extra appreciated as it opens up with the filter.  Agree with Napear the ebb and flow throughout.  It has this outward expanding organic pulsing feel to it.  Oooh the extra_acidic_303 towards the end *chefs_keese*

Kind of reminded me of the Command & Conquer (1995) OST - congratulations!

"mid-tempo bass-music style creepy spooky techno track every week" This is the best news. That bass sounds sooooo goooood. Percussion change up at 1:25 is great, very NIN 'closer' feeling. Favoriting, this is cool as fuck.

veeery spooky.  looks like making ableton crash was worth it. smile

you really use the vocals to your advantage here, they add to the drama and the energy, masterfully done! love that rolling beat, i would have no problem listening to this all day. congrats, great track!

With that initial lyric, this is properly creepy. Then with the distorted bass you're moving it into darksynth territory, like Carpenter Brut maybe? Cool stuff! All in all, very tasteful sound design. No notes. Five stars.

...and I went for horror vibes in W40 as well!

Thank you! It's hilarious and terrible when lyrics/poetry like that comes to you while you're driving ... I had to get Siri to take some audio notes for me in a creepy voice lol.

Thank you! There's so much to learn from Rezz! She's got a way cleaner mix than I do though. I like my ear candy a little too much.

Thank you! I snuck in some acid there for contrast. Surprisingly difficult to get acid to work at low tempo which I find kinda hilarious but that ain't gonna stop me lol.

Thank you! I love NIN and it's probably impossible for me to not lean into that lol. Maybe we'll just get more industrial as the month goes by...

Thank you! I listen to a lot of Carpenter Brut too. This "genre" seems to lean into a lot of other genres really, probably the sorta glitchy sound-candy tendencies. Can't believe I missed your week 40 all week - gonna go listen now!
